Abstract The global refugee community, including those forced to flee due to persecution, conflict, or violence, faces significant challenges in accessing healthcare, resulting in a higher prevalence of surgical disease. These challenges have a profound impact on morbidity and mortality rates, particularly in low- and middle-income countries where many immigrants seek refuge. Limited availability of medical facilities, an inadequate surgical workforce, financial constraints and linguistic and cultural barriers all contribute to reduced access to healthcare. Limited access to competent healthcare leads to poor health outcomes, increased morbidity and mortality rates and suboptimal surgical results for refugees. To address these challenges, a multifaceted approach is necessary. This includes increased funding for healthcare initiatives, workforce recruitment and training and improved coordination between aid organisations and local healthcare systems. Strategies for managing surgical conditions in the global refugee community encompass the development of targeted public health programmes, removing legal barriers, establishing healthcare facilities to enhance surgical access and prioritising disease prevention among refugees.

Abstract Pilonidal sinus is a very common inflammatory disease of the gluteal region. The ideal method of pilonidal sinus treatment should have a low recurrence rate with minimum excision. Moreover, the treatment method should have a short hospitalization time, should let the patient return to his normal life rapidly, should cause minimum loss of labour and should result a small scar only. In the presented review, modalities in pilonidal sinus treatment in the light of current information in the literature are evaluated.

Abstract Introduction: Incisional hernias are abnormal peritoneal outward pouch-like protrusions that develop due to defects that arise as a result of the disruption of the fascia's continuity after abdominal surgery. Presentation of case: A 77-year-old female patient presented to the emergency department of our hospital with complaints of abdominal swelling, abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting. The patient was recommended for surgery. It was decided that the primary fascia closure and onlay patch was the most appropriate approach. Discussion: When the defect in the abdominal wall grows, the functionality of the related abdominal wall is disrupted thereby eliminating the dynamic structure of the abdominal wall. Incisional hernias lead to a significant number of job losses and morbidity and negatively affect quality of life. Moreover, the formations in the hernia pouch might lead to higher risk of strangulation and dysfunction. Conclusion: Subcutaneous herniation of the left lobe of the liver passing through the abdominal wall is a very rare condition.

Abstract The predisposing factors for the development of sacrococcygeal pilonidal disease (SPD) still remain undetermined. Here, we investigate the sacrococcygeal angle as a possible predisposing factor for the development of disease. Consecutive male patients admitted to our clinic with the diagnosis of SPD were included. Sex, age and BMI matched healthy controls without SPD were enrolled to the study. The predefined sacrococcygeal angles of patients and controls were measured on lateral pelvic radiographs by a single experienced radiologist. Thirty patients were included in each group. Sacrococcygeal angles of patients and control group were measured as 37.3 ± 14.5 and 36.81 ± 10.23 in patients and controls, respectively. The difference with respect to sacrococcygeal angle was not statistically significant between two groups. Sacrococcygeal angle which is the main skeletal determinant of intergluteal sulcus is not a predisposing factor for the development of sacrococcygeal pilonidal disease.

Abstract Introduction: With the steady rise in interest in e-learning and the sudden boost provoked by the COVID-19 pandemic, it becomes necessary to explore the e-learning experience within the medical community in the MENA region. Methods: An online survey was conducted during the early phase of the COVID-19 pandemic (June 15 – October 15, 2020). Results: Seventy-eight vascular surgeons and trainees from 16 countries participated. 88% of the participants were male. 55% attended more than 4 activities. More than half of the activities did not lead to any official certification. Topic was the primary determinant for attending an activity. National societies and social media played a major role in disseminating activity-related information. Lack of time, increased workload, differences in time zone, and technical issues were the main obstacles cited. 84.7% of the participants had a positive impression. Conclusion: As the COVID-19 pandemic boosted e-learning activities in vascular surgery, a shift was observed in the learning mode and new leadership skills were called upon. Novel ways of quality control are required.

Abstract Objective: Hiatal hernia is a disorder in which abdominal contents, especially gastroesophageal junction and proximal stomach are displaced through an incompetent esophageal hiatus into mediastinum. Aim of this study is to investigate the relationship betweeen intragastric pressure and incompetent cardioesophageal sphincter and hiatal hernia. Methods: The sample is composed of 81 individuals; 51.9% of which are male (n: 42) and 48.1% of which are female (n: 39) with median age of 42.00. Two groups have been constituted: A control group of healthy volunteers (G1) and a patient group with hiatal hernia (G2). After gastroscopy, all patients and controls underwent gastric and esophageal manometry using a water perfused catheter Results: Mean intragastric pressure was 1,308 mmHg for G1 and, -0,105 mmHg for G2. Mean lower esophageal pressure were 13,143 mmHg and 11,65 mmHg, and upper esophageal pressure were 35,273 mmHg and 27,211 mmHg for G1 and G2, respectively. 24 hour pH metry test revealed 26.8% physiologic gastroesophageal reflux and 73.2% pathologic gastroesophageal reflux in G2. There were statistically significant difference between two groups for mean intragastric pressure (p <0.001) and mean lower esophageal pressure (p <0.05). Conclusion: This study shows that hiatal hernia results in significantly lower intragastric pressures. J Clin Exp Invest 2014; 5 (1): 1-6

Abstract This dataset supports the findings of the vascular e-Learning during the COVID-19 pandemic survey (the EL-COVID survey). The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) of the European Union was taken into consideration in all steps of data handling. The survey was approved by the institutional ethics committee of the Primary Investigator and an online English survey consisting of 18 questions was developed ad-hoc. A bilingual English-Mandarin version of the questionnaire was developed according to the instructions of the Chinese Medical Association in order to be used in mainland People's Republic of China. Differences between the two questionnaires were minor and did affect the process of data collection. Both questionnaires were hosted online. The EL-COVID survey was advertised through major social media. All national and regional contributors contacted their respective colleagues through direct messaging on social media or by email. Eight national societies or groups supported the dissemination of the EL-COVID survey. The data provided demographics information of the EL-COVID participants and an insight on the level of difficulty in accessing or citing previously attended online activities and whether participants were keen on citing these activities in their Curricula Vitae. A categorization of additional comments made by the participants are also based on the data. The survey responses were filtered, anonymized and submitted to descriptive analysis of percentage.
