Abstract The purpose of this study was to evaluateour result in patients with congenital clubfoot deformitywho had been treated with Ponseti’s technique.Materials and methods: The study included 28 patients(18 males, 10 females, mean age 2.2 months; range 6days to 5 months). All patients had Dimeglio grade II, III,and IV deformities. All patients had manipulation andcasting according to the Ponseti’s technique. Achillestenotomy was performed in the persistent equines.Maintenance of correction was obtained with the use offoot abduction orthosis. Mean follow-up period was 17months (range 6-36 months). Results: Forty-one feet of 28 patients were treated accordingto the Ponseti’s technique. Achilles tenotomywas performed in 31 feet (81%). Posterior release wasnot performed in any patient. Although, correction wasmaintained in all feet at the beginning, 14 feet (31%)were relapsed. The relapses were due to decreased complianceto foot abduction orthoses. Conclusion: Ponseti technique is an effective, and reliablein correction of idiopatic congenital clubfoot deformity. The results also suggest that the role of familyeducation to enhance compliance to brace applicationand experienced orthotist are important to prevent relapses.J Clin Exp Invest 2011; 2(1):30-34

Abstract Objective: We aimed to evaluate the functional and radiological results of intraarticular distal radius fractures which treated with volar locking plates. Methods: Twenty-eight patient (mean age 44.6; range 19-74) with intraarticular distal radius fracture were treated with volar locking plate. Of these 18 were type B, and 10 were type C. Mean follow-up was 19 months. Patients were evaluated with MAYO score, and DASH (Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand) questionnaire. Shortening, radial inclination and palmar tilt were recorded. Uninjured wrist was used for comparison. Results: Union was achieved in all fractures. MAYO score revealed excellent results in 6 patients, good in 7 patients, satisfactory in 14 patients, and poor in 1 patients at the latest follow-up. The mean postoperative DASH score was 16.4 (range, 0-76). The mean radial inclination loss was 0.9 degrees and mean palmar tilt loss was 6.9 degrees when compared to uninjured wrist. Active flexion was 56.3°, extension was 52.5°, supination was 74.2° and pronation was 70.7°. Extensor tenosynovitis was observed in four patients, fleksor pollisis longus tenosynovitis in two, carpal tunnel syndrome in two, superficial infection in one, sudeck atrophy in one. Conclusion: Volar locking plates maintain adequate stability with satisfactory functional results in the treatment of intraarticular distal radius fractures. However, flexor and extensor tendon problems, entrapment of median nerve and reflex sympathetic dystrophy should be kept in mind which might be encountered. In case of tenosynivitis, if union had been achieved the implants should be removed without delay.

Abstract Objectives: Efficiency assessment of Lynn method onopen primary repair of acute Achilles tendon ruptures. Methods: Data were evaluated from 19 patients whotreated with the Lynne method due to acute Achilles tendonrupture. Average follow-up length was 12.3 months(range 8-15 months). Dominant side was the right sideby all patients and all patients were males. Plantaris tendonaugmentation was applied after end-to-end repair bymodified Kessler suture technique. Results: The mean postoperative AOFAS score (TheAmerican Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society hindfootclinical outcome scores) was 93.5 (range 82-100). Theaverage of Achilles tendon postoperative assessmentscore, as developed by Thermann and colleagues, was93.3. Both assessment scores were between 90-100 andwere evaluated as very good. None of the patients developedpost-operative wound infection. The Thompson testwas negative on all patients and bilateral motor strengthwas 5/5.Conclusion: Lynn method, especially in young and activepatients with acute Achilles tendon rupture is a methodthat should be considered in treatment protocols.Key words: Achilles tendon, Lynn method, AOFAS score
