Abstract The present study aimed to detect the prevalence and to assess histopathological alterations incriminated to parasitic stages in the liver of Gaddi (breed) goats of the Kangra valley, Himachal Pradesh, India. Out of 107 goats examined (57 males and 50 females), 17 (15.88%) evinced the presence of individual or mixed parasitic infections. The highest prevalence was recorded in winter (25.71%) followed by monsoon (14.28%) and summer seasons (8.11%). Amongst individual parasitic infections, hydatidosis (7.01%) showed the highest prevalence in males followed by distomatosis (3.52%). On the other hand, in females hydatidosis and distomatosis (fasciolosis and dicrocoeliosis) exhibited 4% prevalence each. Concurrent hydatidosis and distomatosis were the most common mixed hepatic parasitic infections encountered in both males (8.77%) and females (4%) examined. The samples of the infected liver subjected to histopathology exhibited the presence of multiple cysts of variable sizes containing outer lining epithelium surrounded by the zone of lymphocytic infiltration. The present study highlighted the observation of the diseases of emerging public health concern and require generation of awareness amongst the shepherds, people working in abattoirs as well as consumers about the seasonal preponderance, transmission and ill effects of the diseases.

Abstract The present study communicates the pathological and parasitological investigation of parasitic proventriculitis and enteritis in four free ranging common mynas (Acridotheres tristis). Common mynas (Acridotheres tristis) are omnivorous that makes them more susceptible for various different parasitic diseases. Due to sharing of common ecological niche with domestic fowls and human beings these birds pose a significant threat of spreading of parasitic infection. Pathological examination is done on four carcasses of common mynas (2 male and 2 female) presented with the history of debilitation and respiratory distress before death. Gross necropsy examination of the birds revealed the presence of spiral, creamish white coloured roundworms attached to mucosal surface of proventiculus resulting to areas of ulceration at the site of attachment along with diffuse catarrhal exudate accumulation. Parasitological investigation of intestinal round worm was done. These round worms in the proventriculus were identified as Gongylonema ingluvicola and Acuaria spiralis on parasitological investigation. The gross examination of the intestine has also revealed the presence of segmented flat worms, which were later on confirmed as Raillietina cesticillus. Histopathological examination of proventricular tissue stuffed with roundworms exhibited thickening of glandular mucosa along with denuded basement membrane and infiltrates of leucocytes. The histological section of intestine reflected eosinophilic parasitic remnants with heavy infiltration of MNCs especially lymphocytes and degenerated and necrosed cellular debris in the intestinal lumen. As per the best of the knowledge of the authors this study puts into record a concurrent multiple parasitic infection in common myna.

Abstract The prevalence of chronic kidney diseases (CKD) is higher in geriatric population than in the general population. CKD in dogs is influenced by a complex relationship among various factors including environmental stress, imbalanced diet, genotypic ground, hyperparathyroidism and affections related to cardio-renal axis. The necropsy investigation of CKD suspected dogs in this study has explored the evidences of progressive bone lesions (Osteodystrophy fibrosa), palatine erosions, stomach ulcers, renal tissue affections (chronic nephritis, hydronephrosis, atrophy), urolithiasis and prostate enlargement. Apart from oral, stomach, intestinal, bone, lungs and prostate lesions, the renal lesions were pronounced especially in aged dogs. Grossly, kidneys of the affected dogs exhibited indented, contracted and pale appearance. Histological lesions documented in the renal tissues of geriatric dogs included degenerative changes in the renal tubules, mineralization of tubular and glomerular basement membranes, glomerulosclerosis and fibrosis of interstitial tissue along with mononuclear cells (MNCs) infiltration particularly macrophages, lymphocytes and plasma cells. Microscopic examination of the tissue collected from mandibular area depicted the presence of increased osteoclastic activity and resorption of osseous tissue with collagen. This study suggests that CKDs in geriatric dogs is associated with age and complicated by various related factors. The adverse effects of renal dysfunction in dogs with advancing age can be reversed via early diagnosis and mitigation of factors associated with CKDs. Further efforts are needed to derive a correlation between multifactorial etiologies associated with CKD in dogs.

Abstract The present study determined the prevalence of hydatid cysts in different organs of slaughtered hilly 'Gaddi' breed small ruminants-sheep (n = 230) and goats (n = 197)-in Kangra Valley of the north-western Himalayas, India. Hydatid cysts were found in 12.2% (n = 28) of sheep and 10.7% (n = 21) of goats. Pulmonary echinococcosis was more prevalent in slaughtered sheep and goats (sheep 56.36%; goats 62.90%) than hepatic echinococcosis (sheep 43.64%; goats 37.10%). Fertility rates were higher in hepatic (81.25%) and pulmonary cysts of sheep (83.87%) compared to goats. Molecular identification and genotypic characterization of Echinococcus granulosus isolates were based on mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase 1 gene (mtCO1). The genotypic characterization identified the isolated strain to be closely related to the G7 genotype. Histopathological examination revealed a thick coat of granulation tissue, causing fibrosis and inflammatory reaction composed of fibroblasts and mononuclear cells around the cysts. In the liver, hepato-cellular degeneration was prominent at the periphery of the cysts. The present study highlights the molecular confirmation and phylogenetic analysis of E. granulosus isolates with the prevalence of hydatidosis in a naïve host species and in an unexplored region. The findings are of significant medical and veterinary importance regarding development of control measures to check dissemination of hydatidosis.

Abstract Ethnopharmacological relevance: Breast cancer is a major cause of death among human females across the globe. The anti-neoplastic agents or therapies used for the treatment of cancers can enhance longevity but are subsequently observed to deteriorate the quality of life due to the extensive side effects produced. Saussurea costus is a potential medicinal plant of the Himalayas with noticeable ethnopharmacological properties. The phytochemicals present in Saussurea costus are responsible for anti-carcinogenic potential and warranted nil or minimal side effects of Saussurea costus and directed to use this plant as a preventive or therapeutic drug candidate against cancers.
Aim of the study: The present study was planned to evaluate the anti-neoplastic activity of Saussurea costus root extract (SL) in rat mammary tumour model.
Materials and methods: The anti-neoplastic activity of SL root extract at 3 different doses (100, 250 and 500 mg/kg BW) for 18 weeks against 12-dimethylbenz (a) anthracene (DMBA)-induced mammary tumours in Sprague Dawley (SD) female rats was analyzed through serum biochemistry (ALT, AST, ALP, Total protein, Creatinine and BUN), oxidative stress parameters (Lipid peroxidation, Catalase and Reduced glutathione), pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α and NF-κB), immunohistochemical markers (Ki-67, MMP-9 and VEGF), real-time PCR (PCNA, p53, bax, bcl-2 and caspase-3, genes) and molecular docking.
Results: Inhibition of tumour parameters, minimal alteration in the liver (ALT, AST and ALP) and kidney enzymes (Creatinine and BUN), decreased activity of MDA, elevated levels of GSH and catalase, reduction in the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines i.e. TNF-α and NF-κB, reduced gross and histomorphological changes, declined expression of Ki-67, MMP-9 and VEGF in vivo rat model, mRNA expression of cancer-related genes and docking of dehydrocostus lactone and costunolide with NF-κB and TNF-α demonstrated the chemopreventive action of SL root extract.
Conclusions: The in-vivo trial elucidates anti-neoplastic activity of Saussurea costus root extract as demonstrated through the reduction of biochemical indices, oxidative stress parameters, histological changes, pro-inflammatory cytokines (NF-κB and TNF-α), cellular proliferation (Ki-67), metastases (MMP-9) and neovascularization (VEGF) markers with highest anti-neoplastic effect of SL extract at the dose of 500 mg/kg body weight. Therefore, the present study signifies the need to use the active principles present in the root extract of Saussurea costus against breast cancer as a therapeutic regimen.

Abstract The necropsy of a leopard (Panthera pardus), succumbed to a chronic ailment exhibited a mixed parasitic gastroenteritis. Gross internal examination of carcass revealed the presence of round and tapeworms in the stomach and intestines with diffuse catarrhal and hemorrhagic gastroenteritis. The detailed examination of the intestinal content revealed the presence of Toxocara canis and Spirometra species eggs. Also, the gross morphological investigation of round and tapeworms approved the presence of both species. Histo-pathological examination showed sloughing of intestinal epithelium, hemorrhages, and ulcerative areas with the infiltration of polymorphonuclear cells admixed with mononuclear cells. Lungs revealed the accumulation of eosinophilic edematous fl uid in the alveolar spaces along with inflammatory cells. These parasites are pathogenic to precious wild felids and often pose a threat of zoonotic transmission due to spill-over infections. The present case study is an attempt to put on record a case of parasitic gastroenteritis in a captive leopard.

Abstract Haemonchosis is a serious health problem of small ruminants associated with huge economic losses to the farmers in terms of low productivity and mortality. The aim of the present study was to ascertain the cause of death in three Chegu goats presented to the clinics with the history of weight loss, respiratory signs, diarrhoea and anaemia. The evaluation of haematological parameters including Hb, PCV and RBCs did not show any alteration and might be linked to the compensatory polycythemia in goats as a result of fluid loss. The reduction in the values of MCV and MCH significantly correlates with the depletion of iron stores in the body leading to microcytic anaemia in goats. Necropsy examination of these goats revealed the presence of hydrothorax, hydroperitoneum, gelatinization of body fat, nutmeg liver, and congested and ulcerated abomasal mucosa. The round worms recovered from the abomasum and cecum were later on characterized as Haemonchus contortus and Trichuris spp. respectively. Microscopically, denuded abomasal mucosa infiltrated with mononuclear cells, goblet cell hyperplasia in bronchiolar epithelium along with peri-bronchiolar infiltration of mononuclear cells, lymphocytic deletion in lymphoid organs, and chronic venous congestion in the liver were evident. The present report puts into record a case of severe haemonchosis where clinical, gross, histopathological and parasitological findings all together suggests the vigorous blood feeding by Haemonchus contortus parasite leading to hypoproteinaemia, hypovolemic shock and death in Chegu goats.
