Abstract Background: Pressure ulcers associated with the non-invasive ventilation mask can significantly reduce the quality of life of the patient who needs this therapy. This study aims to identify clinical interventions to prevent skin lesions associated with the use of non-invasive ventilation medical devices.
Methods: The Scoping Review followed the methodology of the Joanna Briggs Institute. For this study the research was carried out, during the month of January 2022, in several databases, such as PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, EBSCOhost, RCAAP and OpenGrey, and studies published between 2010 and 2022 were included.
Results: Of the 33 articles identified, 11 articles were included in this review, in which we identified several interventions for the prevention of skin lesions associated with the use of medical devices for non-invasive ventilation. The interventions identified include skin assessment, optimal fixation of the device, and the use of interfaces, namely, hydrocolloid or foam dressing under the NIV mask, among others Conclusion: This scoping review demonstrates that there is some scientific evidence for prevention, however the methodological approaches are very different, which makes it difficult to clearly describe the referenced interventions. This study was not registered.

Abstract The present study investigated the reliability and sensitivity of a wearable near-infrared spectroscopy (wNIRS) device in moderate and heavy exercise intensity domains. On three separate days, eleven males performed an incremental test to exhaustion, and in the following visits, four submaximal constant-load bouts (i.e., test and retest) were performed in the moderate-intensity domain (100 and 130 W) and heavy-intensity domain (160 and 190 W). The local tissue oxygen saturation index (SmO2) and pulmonary oxygen uptake (V̇O2) were measured continuously. The absolute SmO2 and V̇O2 values and the change (Δ) from the 3rd to 6th min of exercise were calculated. There was good reliability for SmO2 measurements, as indicated by the high intraclass correlation coefficient analysis (ICC ≥0.84 for all) and low coefficient of variation between the two trials (CV ≤4.1% for all). Steady-state responses were observed for SmO2 and V̇O2 from the 3rd to the 6th min in the two moderate-intensity bouts (P>0.05), whereas SmO2 decreased and V̇O2 increased from the 3rd to the 6th min in the two heavy-intensity bouts (P<0.05). Together, these findings suggested that the SmO2 measured with a wNIRS device is reliable and sensitive to track local metabolic changes provoked by slight increments in exercise intensity.

Abstract Introduction: In orthodontics, patients' esthetic expectations involve the final esthetic result as well as the treatment's appliance choice. Personality traits can influence patients' perception, treatment modality selection, expectations, compliance, and satisfaction with the treatment outcome, although there are very few studies on this interconnection between personality and orthodontic appliances.
Objective: The aim of this study is to evaluate the relationship between personality traits and the esthetic perception of different orthodontic appliances.
Materials and methods: The online questionnaire is composed of three parts: (1) sociodemographic variables; (2) questions on the esthetic perception of different orthodontic appliances; (3) general personality assessment via the NEO-FFI. A total of 461 questionnaires were accepted.
Results: There were statistically significant differences between laypeople and professionals related to assessing smiles and the need for orthodontic treatment. Laypeople identified a statistically significant relationship between personality traits and orthodontic appliances, in which esthetic perception is associated with high traits of agreeableness and openness. Neuroticism is most associated with orthodontic treatment with fixed appliances, which are the most conventional.
Conclusions: Professionals tend to have a more critical judgment than laypeople as far as esthetics is concerned. Personality traits play an important role in esthetic perception and may influence orthodontic treatment.

Abstract Previous studies have shown that haemodialysis patients have an increased risk of trace element imbalances. Most studies have determined the concentration of trace elements in serum only, but most trace elements are not uniformly distributed between plasma and blood cells, which justifies separate analysis of the different compartments. In this study, we determined both the serum and whole blood concentration of a wide panel of trace elements (Li, B, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Se, Rb, Sr, Mo, Cd, Pb) in haemodialysis patients and compared them with those of a control group. Whole blood and serum samples were collected during routine laboratory testing of patients undergoing chronic haemodialysis. For comparison purposes, samples from individuals with normal renal function were also analysed. Statistically significant differences (

Abstract Gums and carrageenans are food additives widely used in food preparations to improve texture and as viscosifiers. Although they are typically added in small amounts, nowadays people tend to use more and more pre-prepared food. In this work, the content of a wide panel of trace elements in commercial products were analyzed. Carrageenans and gums (n = 13) were purchased in the Portuguese market and were from European suppliers. Samples were solubilized by closed-vessel microwave-assisted acid digestion and analyzed by ICP-MS. Globally, the content of essential trace elements decreased in the following order: Fe (on average, on the order of several tens of µg/g) > Mn > Zn > Cr > Cu > Co > Se > Mo (typically < 0.1 µg/g), while the content of non-essential/toxic trace elements decreased in the following order: Al > Sr > Rb > As > Li > Cd > Pb > Hg. The consumption of these food additives can significantly contribute to the daily requirements of some essential trace elements, namely Cr and Mo. The toxic trace elements Cd, As, Pb, and Hg were below the EU regulatory limits in all analyzed samples. Additional research is needed to define the potential risk of introducing toxic trace elements into food products through the use of these additives.

Abstract Di(2-etilhexil) phthalate (DEHP) is a compound used in plastic materials, which has endocrine disrupting properties. The human DEHP exposure depend on the use of plastics in toys, medical devices and food and beverage containers. The DEHP effects were studied in some physiological systems; nevertheless, the actions in human arteries were never described. We analysed the DEHP effect on endothelium denuded human umbilical artery (HUA), an important artery to ensure gases and nutrients exchange with fetus. We assessed DEHP short-term effects on contractility, occurring few minutes after DEHP is in contact with HUA in the organ bath receptacles. The long-term effects on HUA, observed after 24 h in presence of DEHP, were assessed in the organ bath system, and also through the analysis of receptors expression (5-HT2A and H1) and of cellular viability, by using HUA smooth muscle cells.DEHP (1 nM-100 μM) induced a short-term relaxing effect on HUA contracted by 5-HT, histamine or KCl. DEHP long-term exposure of arteries (1 nM, 10 μM and 100 μM) reduced its own relaxant effect on HUA contracted by 5-HT and histamine and, precisely, 24 h exposure to DEHP 1 nM reverted the relaxant effect on 5-HT contractility. Long-term exposure at more than 10 nM of DEHP decreased 5HT2A receptors expression. In conclusion, DEHP short-term exposition elicit vasodilation of HUA contracted by different agents. DEHP long-term exposition reduced the expression of 5HT2A receptors. The DEHP long-term exposition decrease the short-term relaxant effect and, at low concentrations can increase the contractile effect of 5-HT.

Abstract Eccrine hidradenocarcinoma is a rare adnexal neoplasm arising from the eccrine sweat glands of the skin. Surgery and radiotherapy are the mainstay of treatment, and chemotherapy is reserved for unresectable or metastatic lesions. We present the case of a 60-year-old man, referred for treatment of an unresectable basal cell carcinoma of the scalp. He started Vismodegib in January of 2017 but progressed after three months. A new biopsy showed a poorly differentiated carcinoma. The patient started carboplatin/paclitaxel with a major response, enabling surgery in December of 2017. Pathology concluded on a hidradenocarcinoma, R1, and radiotherapy was not possible due to local infection. Four months later, he underwent radiotherapy due to local recurrence, and restarted carboplatin/paclitaxel, but with progressive disease. An exploratory surgery in October of 2018 revealed unresectable disease. Restaging showed lung metastasis and second-line chemotherapy was proposed. However, due to continued clinical deterioration, the patient died in February of 2019.
