Abstract The gas-isotropic liquid-nematic liquid phase behavior of the Stockmayer fluid is studied using molecular dynamics simulation together with a mean field lattice model. We obtain coexistence curves of the Stockmayer fluid over a wide range of dipole strengths, temperatures, and densities, including the transition from the isotropic liquid to the ferroelectric liquid. In our simulations we do not observe the disappearance of the isotropic gas-isotropic liquid coexistence at high dipole strength contrary to earlier findings based on Monte Carlo techniques. Even though the formation of reversible dipole chains strongly affects the location of the critical point, it does not lead to its disappearance. These results are supported by a mean field lattice model which yields good qualitative, and in parts quantitative, agreement with our simulations. In addition, we also investigate the gas-isotropic liquid phase behavior for different polarizabilities.

    Abstract S.4587-4594

Field I-V curve measurements are an important means of quality assurance. They provide a possibility to verify the actual module power on a representative sample of modules in the field. The result is "worth money", so it is essential that the uncertainty is kept at a minimum. This requires good knowledge of PV measurement principles, even if measurement equipment is readily available. Operators have to be aware of the influence of environmental conditions during measurements on the result. We performed a detailed uncertainty analysis in order to improve our procedure and measurement equipment. With our procedure, which follows the principles of IEC 60904-1 and applies procedure 1 in IEC 60891, we achieve uncertainties between 2.2% and 5%. This requires traceable primary calibrated measurement equipment and a thorough determination of temperature coefficients and other needed parameters. The major contributions to the combined uncertainty of corrected power are discussed in this paper. As it is important that the performance of thin film technologies can be assessed, we included not only crystalline silicon technologies, but also CdTe and amorphous silicon technologies in our analysis.

Abstract We develop a simple theory explaining the dependence of the gas-liquid critical point in the Stockmayer fluid on dipole strength. The theory is based on the Flory-Huggins lattice description for polymer systems in conjunction with a transfer matrix model for isolated chains of reversibly assembled dipolar particles. We find that the shift of the critical point as a function of dipole strength, which originally was found in computer simulation, strongly resembles the critical point shift as a function of chain length in ordinary linear polymer systems. In particular, the decrease of the critical density with increasing dipole strength is a consequence of the existence of reversible chains near criticality. In addition we report simulation results for gas-liquid critical points well above the limiting dipole strength found previously.

Abstract Emission of pi+/-, K+/-, phi, and Lambda was measured in near-central C+C and Si+Si collisions at 158 AGeV beam energy. Together with earlier data for p+p, S+S, and Pb+Pb, the system-size dependence of relative strangeness production in nucleus-nucleus collisions is obtained. Its fast rise and the saturation observed at about 60 participating nucleons can be understood as the onset of the formation of coherent systems of increasing size.

Abstract Results are presented on Omega production in central Pb+Pb collisions at 40 and 158A GeV beam energy. For the first time in heavy ion reactions, rapidity distributions and total yields were measured for the sum Omega(-) + Omega(+) at 40A GeV and for Omega(-) and Omega(+) separately at 158A GeV. The yields are strongly underpredicted by the string-hadronic UrQMD model but agree better with predictions from hadron gas models.

Abstract Results of resonance searches in the Xi(-)pi(-), Xi(-)pi(+), Xi;(+)pi(-), and Xi;(+)pi(+) invariant mass spectra in proton-proton collisions at sqrt[s]=17.2 GeV are presented. Evidence is shown for the existence of a narrow Xi(-)pi(-) baryon resonance with mass of 1.862+/-0.002 GeV/c(2) and width below the detector resolution of about 0.018 GeV/c(2). The significance is estimated to be above 4.2sigma. This state is a candidate for the hypothetical exotic Xi(--)(3/2) baryon with S=-2, I=3 / 2, and a quark content of (dsdsū). At the same mass, a peak is observed in the Xi(-)pi(+) spectrum which is a candidate for the Xi(0)(3/2) member of this isospin quartet with a quark content of (dsus[-]d). The corresponding antibaryon spectra also show enhancements at the same invariant mass.

Abstract Production of Lambda and Antilambda hyperons was measured in central Pb-Pb collisions at 40, 80, and 158A GeV beam energy on a fixed target. Transverse mass spectra and rapidity distributions are given for all three energies. The Lambda/pi ratio at midrapidity and in full phase space shows a pronounced maximum between the highest BNL Alternating Gradient Synchrotron and 40A GeV CERN Super Proton Synchrotron energies, whereas the Lambda/pi ratio exhibits a monotonic increase.

Abstract We present the first measurement of fluctuations from event to event in the production of strange particles in collisions of heavy nuclei. The ratio of charged kaons to charged pions is determined for individual central Pb+Pb collisions. After accounting for the fluctuations due to detector resolution and finite number statistics we derive an upper limit on genuine nonstatistical fluctuations, which could be related to a first- or second-order QCD phase transition. Such fluctuations are shown to be very small.
