Abstract Mannose-binding lectin (MBL) binds to SARS-CoV-2, inhibits infection of susceptible cells, and activates the complement system via the lectin pathway. In this study, we investigated the association of MBL2 polymorphisms with the risk of hospitalization and clinical worsening in patients with COVID-19. A total of 550 patients with COVID-19 were included (94 non-hospitalized and 456 hospitalized). Polymorphisms in MBL2 exon 1 (codons 52, 54 and 57) and promoter region (−550, −221, and +4) were determined by real-time PCR. MBL and complement proteins were measured by Luminex. A higher frequency of the H/H genotype and the HYPA haplotype was observed in non-hospitalized patients when compared to hospitalized. In addition, critically ill patients carrying haplotypes associated with high MBL levels (HYPA/HYPA + HYPA/LYPA + HYPA/LYQA + LYPA/LYQA + LYPA/LYPA + LYQA/LYQA + LXPA/HYPA + LXPA/LYQA + LXPA/LYPA) were protected against lower oxygen saturation levels (P = 0.02), use of invasive ventilation use (P = 0.02, OR 0.38), and shock (P = 0.01, OR 0.40), independent of other potential confounders adjusted by multivariate analysis. Our results suggest that variants in MBL2 associated with high MBL levels may play a protective role in the clinical course of COVID-19.

Abstract Childhood is a phase of life in which children have as their main occupation, playing, this action is essential to maintain their physical and mental health and can include objects and occur individually or in a group. It is worth corroborating that, in childhood, the illness and hospitalization of children are factors that challenge healthy development, since hospitalization allows the manifestation of an early maturation for this phase. The manuscript is a literature review research with a qualitative approach and descriptive character in order to describe the contributions of the therapeutic toy to care for the child in the hospital. After associating all descriptors, 15 articles were selected that maintained coherence with the descriptors and the objectives of the study. After reflective reading, three categories emerged: therapeutic toys and contributions to the hospitalized child; difficulties in inserting therapeutic toys in the care of hospitalized children; therapeutic toys as a subsidy for nursing care for hospitalized children. The therapeutic toy in child hospitalization reduces stress, releases affectivity and allows the child to be able to express his emotions within the hospital environment, being an effective strategy, as the child releases his creativity, reinvents the world and explores its limits. It is concluded that, when confronting the sufferings of the hospitalized child, expressed in the face of pain and in the absence of motivation and human warmth, the therapeutic toy can be used as resources that facilitate and bring out the child's skills and potential and thus seeks to rescue the importance of toys and playing for the well-being of hospitalized children and their families.

Abstract Chatergellus communis is a wasp species endemic to the neotropical region and its venom constituents have never been described. In this study, two peptides from C. communis venom, denominated Communis and Communis-AAAA, were chemically and biologically characterized. In respect to the chemical characterization, the following amino acid sequences and molecular masses were identified:Communis: Ile-Asn-Trp-Lys-Ala-Ile-Leu-Gly-Lys-Ile-Gly-Lys-COOH (1340.9Da)Communis-AAAA: Ile-Asn-Trp-Lys-Ala-Ile-Leu-Gly-Lys-Ile-Gly-Lys-Ala-Ala-Ala-Ala-Val-Xle-NH2 (1836.3Da).Furthermore, their biological effects were compared, accounting for the differences in structural characteristics between the two peptides. To this end, three biological assays were performed in order to evaluate the hyperalgesic, edematogenic and hemolytic effects of these molecules. Communis-AAAA, unlike Communis, showed a potent hemolytic activity with EC50=142.6μM. Moreover, the highest dose of Communis-AAAA (2nmol/animal) induced hyperalgesia in mice. On the other hand, Communis (10nmol/animal) was able to induce edema but did not present hemolytic or hyperalgesic activity. Although both peptides have similarities in linear structures, we demonstrated the distinct biological effects of Communis and Communis-AAAA. This is the first study with Chartegellus communis venom, and both Communis and Communis-AAAA are unpublished peptides.
