    Abstract Trial-and-error approaches for lignin applications and new product development is resource intensive. By quantifying the solubility parameters for 45 different lignins encompassing all sources as well as existing commercial scale processes for their recovery, computer-based predictions of lignin solvent-based fractionation and compatibility with various polymers are now possible, paving a pathway for improved chemical analytics and industrial applications.

    Abstract Objective: To evaluate the potential of products made out of underutilised fruits and vegetables for closing seasonal nutritional gaps among rural and urban consumers in East Africa.
    Design: The multinational analysis combines sensory testing and experimental auctions to assess consumers' perceptions and willingness to pay (WTP) for 6 different fruit and vegetable products.
    Setting: Open markets in rural and urban areas in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.
    Participants: There were 939 male and female adults who were at least 18 years old.
    Results: Tobit models for each product show that besides sensory perception, similar socio-demographic characteristics influence consumers' WTP for these products in all 3 countries. The products are especially liked among younger, male and urban consumers.
    Conclusion: We conclude that there is demand and a potential market for processed fruit and vegetable products based on indigenous raw material in East Africa. The products, thus, have promising potential to improve nutrition, especially during off-season conditions when access to fresh produce is limited.

    Abstract Objective: To examine the in vitro antimicrobial activities of essential oil of the leaves of Eucalyptus globulus (E. globulus).
    Methods: The essential oils of this plant were obtained by the hydrodistillation method. The inhibitory effects of this essential oil were tested against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) by using agar disc diffusion and dilution broth methods.
    Results: The results obtained showed that essential oil of the leaves of E. globulus has antimicrobial activity against gram negative bacteria (E. coli) as well as gram positive bacteria (S. aureus).
    Conclusion: The encouraging results indicate the essential oil of E. globulus leaves might be exploited as natural antibiotic for the treatment of several infectious diseases caused by these two germs, and could be useful in understanding the relations between traditional cures and current medicines.

    Abstract In the frame of the project MORA (Matter's Origin from the Radio Activity of trapped and oriented ions), a transparent axially symmetric radio-frequency ion trap (MORATrap) was designed in order to measure the triple correlation parameter $D$ in nuclear $\beta-$decay of laser-polarised ions. The trap design was inspired from the LPCTrap geometry, operated at GANIL from 2005 to 2013. In a real (non-ideal) Paul trap, the quadrupole electric potential is not perfect leading to instabilities in ion motion and therefore affecting the overall trapping efficiency. This paper presents a numerical method aiming to optimise the geometry of a trap. It is applied to MORATrap in order to improve the trapping efficiency and to enlarge the axial transparent solid angle compared to LPCTrap. In the whole optimisation process, numerical computation of electric potential and field was carried out using an electrostatic solver based on boundary element method (BEM). The optimisation consisted in minimising an objective function (fitness function) depending on higher order multipoles of the potential. Finally, systematic changes of trap dimensions and electrode displacements were applied to investigate geometrical effects on the potential quality.

    Abstract This study aimed at investigating the drying of yellow pea starch dispersions on inert solid carriers and determining the drying kinetics, moisture diffusivity and the product quality, quantified through damage index and final moisture content. Drying kinetics accomplished in a convective drying tunnel show that the overall mass transfer is controlled by internal migration of moisture within the starch particles. For a given inlet air temperature from 100 to 180°C, the apparent diffusion coefficient derived from the drying curves increases exponentially with the instantaneous moisture content, with values ranging from 4×10−11 to 3×10−8m2/s. Due to low diffusivity and the thin coat formed on the surface of solid carriers, the resistance to internal diffusion is negligible as compared to the overall mass transfer resistance when drying of starch dispersions takes place on inert solid carriers. Drying of yellow pea starch dispersion on Teflon particles as inert carriers was studied in laboratory and pilot fast spouted bed dryer for inlet air temperatures from 140 to 240°C, and initial solid content of 38%, mass (d.b.). The starch damage index for targeted product moisture content was below 2.5% in the inlet air temperature range from 120 to 210°C, when atomizing from the bottom of dryer.

    Abstract Modern agricultural supply chains have been playing an increasingly important role in developing countries and have had significant effects on rural labor markets. This article analyses the effects of smallholder farmer participation in export vegetable supply chains in Northern Tanzania on both household hired labor demand and off‐farm labor supply, using an age‐disaggregated approach. In our sample, neither separability nor exogeneity of smallholder farmer participation in export supply chains can be rejected. Hence, we apply lognormal double‐hurdle models and find that participation in export supply chains positively affects households’ decision to hire labor from all age groups. We also find that it increases the unconditional overall level of hired labor demand, while the age‐disaggregated analysis shows that these effects mostly benefit rural youth. However, our sample does not allow us to establish statistically significant evidence of an effect on household off‐farm labor supply although the point estimates point to nonnegligible positive effect sizes.

    Title translation The consequences of the lockdown on cardiovascular diseases.
    Abstract Background: The Sars COV-2 infection causing the covid-19 disease has started in December 2019 inWuhan, China, then spread quickly to more than 100 countries in less than 3 months. On March, 11th the WHO declared officially the pandemic of Covid 19. In the absence of an effective treatment of the SARS-Cov2 the measures of social distancing and lockdown remain the most effectives ways against the pandemic. However, these measures can have repercussions in particular on patients followed for chronic diseases, the goal of our study will be to evaluate the impact of the lockdown on non-Covid cardiac patients.
    Methods: We have chosen a random sample of patients followed in the cardiology department of the CHU Tangier Tetouan Alhouceima, and we collected their demographic data as well as the symptoms, vital constants, lifestyle before and 60 days after the lockdown.
    Results: A total of 100 patients were included in the study. The average age of our population is 55.34 years±15.86. The average BMI (body mass index) is 26.40 Kg/m
    Our observation: Depending on the results of this study, the sanitary lockdown induced important repercussions on the patients followed for cardiac diseases, hence the necessity of an awareness of these patients, and mostly a restructuring of our care system strongly disturbed by the Covid 19.

    Abstract Yellow birch barks is one of the abundant species in Quebec with harvest surplus in several regions. Biofuels or biochemicals such as biobutanol can be produced using the surplus feedstock, however challenges such as the cost of pretreatment, production of unwanted by-products in the fermentation process, and the efficient recovery of solvents must be addressed to make it feasible. The objectives of this study are to establish the optimal conditions to produce biobutanol from Eastern Canadian yellow birch; to identify natural/local Clostridium sp. strains that are capable of producing Isopropanol-Butanol-Ethanol (IBE) from synthetic sugar mixtures, as candidates for metabolic engineering and to benchmark solvent producing ability with commercially available strains; and to elucidate the challenges of paradigm shift to IBE production. Alkali pretreatment of the biomass using chemical that are present in the Kraft process were performed, followed by enzymatic hydrolysis to obtain fermentable sugars and subsequent fermentation with Clostridium acetobutylicum DSM 792. The results showed that the produced Acetone-Butanol-Ethanol (ABE) solvent concentration were 6.6–8.2 g/L of acetone; 11.2–13.1 g/L of butanol; and 2.5–2.7 g/L of ethanol. The organic acids concentration was acetic acid, 1.1–1.8 g/L, and butyric acid, 0.1–0.2 g/L. Further fermentation experiments to benchmark IBE were performed using both Clostridium beijerinckii DSM 6423 and wild isolated strains, which revealed the gaps in terms of yields and the need to optimize the fermentation paradigm. Moreover, alternative process sequences for product recovery were identified, and the impact of prior liquid-liquid extraction elucidated.

    Abstract Tinplate cans were used to study if electro-activated brine solution (EAS) is more corrosive than conventional one by ICP analysis. The results showed different effects of EAS on cans, alone or filled with product. Acidic EAS (pH 2-3) and Redox +900 to +1200 mV highly reacted with the cans. The concentrations of Zn, Fe, and Cu in the solution were 0.028, 28.81, and 0.022 ppm, respectively. No Sn migration was observed in this case. When neutral or acidic chlorine-free EAS was used, no significant difference was observed in comparison with the corrosivity of standard NaCl brine. Alkaline EAS with pH>10 and negative E (≤-966 mV) did not affect Zn, Fe, and Cu migration. However, it affected tin migration. Nevertheless, it is important to mention that even if some corrosion was observed, it was in the limit of the permitted level of concentration when the cans were filled with a product.

    Abstract Total dry matter and proteins were differentially and preferentially extracted from canola meal (CM) under different conditions. The effect of the extraction medium pH, CM concentration and salt concentrations were found to have different influences on the extractability of total dry matter and proteins from CM. The pH of the extracting medium had the most significant effect. The maximal total dry matter (42.8±1.18%) extractability was obtained with 5% CM at pH 12 without salt addition, whereas the maximal for total protein (58.12±1.47%) was obtained with 15% CM under the same conditions. The minimal extractability for the dry matter (26.63±0.67%) was obtained with 5% CM at pH 10 without salt added and the minimal protein extractability was observed in a 10% CM at pH 10, in 0.01 NaCl. Turbidity and ζ-potential measurements indicated that pH 5 was the optimum condition for the highest protein extraction yield. SDS-PAGE analysis showed that salt addition contributes to higher solubility of canola proteins specifically cruciferin fraction, although it reduces napin extraction.
