    Abstract After formal school entry, theory of mind development encounters a blooming period of growth intertwined with social and academic achievements and challenges. Within this framework, in last years researchers have proposed training programs to foster mature ToM skills, but also, to test causal pathways for the role that ToM development may have in broader cognitive and social outcomes. In the current mini-review we examine which training programs have been developed so far to enhance three key aspects of mature ToM skills: second-order false belief reasoning, the ability to put one's own ToM knowledge into use, and the mentalization of thoughts and emotions. We also illustrate effects of these activities on intra- and inter- personal competence. In its conclusion the paper provides considerations of both first achievements of research in this area and gaps to be addressed in future works.

    Abstract Background: The choice of how to repair inguinal hernias in adolescents has historically been a matter of experience and differed between pediatric surgeons who traditionally performed a high ligation of the sac and general surgeons who typically perform a repair using mesh. This up-to-date review thoroughly examines the subject and discusses the suitability of both types of repairs in this unique age group.
    Methods: A 20-year Pub Med search was performed for the following terms: adolescent hernia repair including reports of mesh hernia repair in adolescents and postoperative complications including chronic inguinal pain and recurrences.
    Results: The evidence in the literature suggests that while there appears to be no difference between the two types of repairs with regards to recurrence and complications, changes in the pelvic floor physiology in adolescents suggest that a selective, individualized approach can be recommended depending on the size and nature of the presenting pathology.
    Conclusions: A selective approach to the inguinal hernia in adolescent patients based on the size of the defect appears justified.

    Abstract The issue of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is widespread in marine sediments involving ecological systems and human health. Sediment washing (SW) has proven to be the most effective remediation approach for sediments polluted by PAHs, such as phenanthrene (PHE). However, SW still raises waste handling concerns due to a considerable amount of effluents generated downstream. In this context, the biological treatment of a PHE- and ethanol-containing spent SW solution can represent a highly efficient and environmentally-friendly strategy, but its knowledge is still scarce in scientific literature and no studies have so far been conducted in continuous mode. Therefore, a synthetic PHE-polluted SW solution was biologically treated in a 1 L aerated continuous-flow stirred-tank reactor for 129 days by evaluating the effect of different pH values, aeration flowrates and hydraulic retention times as operating parameters over five successive phases. A PHE removal efficiency of up to 75-94% was achieved by an acclimated PHE-degrading consortium mainly composed of Proteobacteria, Bacteroidota and Firmicutes phyla through biodegradation following the adsorption mechanism. PHE biodegradation, mainly occurring via the benzoate route due to the presence of PAH-related-degrading functional genes and a phthalate accumulation up to 46 mg/L, was also accompanied by a reduction of dissolved organic carbon and ammonia nitrogen above 99% in the treated SW solution.

    Abstract The COVID-19 pandemic is highly challenging for the operating room staff and healthcare workers in emergency departments. SARS-CoV-2 is a positive-sense single-stranded RNA beta-coronavirus that primarily targets the human respiratory system, with fever, cough, myalgia, and pneumonia as the most common manifestations. However, since SARS-CoV-2 RNA was detected in stool specimens much more attention has been paid to gastrointestinal symptoms such as loss of appetite, nausea, and diarrhea. Furthermore, the expression of ACE-2 receptors in absorptive enterocytes from ileum and colon suggests that these organs should also be considered as a potential high risk for SARS-CoV-2 infection. During aerosol-generating medical procedures (AGMP; e.g. intubating and extubating patients or any surgical procedures), the production of both airborne particles and droplets may increase the risk of infection. In this situation, the surgical staff is strongly recommended to wear personal protective equipment (PPE). A transparent plastic cube, the so-called "Aerosol Box" (AB), has been recently designed to lend further protection against droplets and aerosol exposure during the AGMP.

    Abstract This study proposes the supplementation of digestate, fresh organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) and a nutrient solution during the anaerobic biostimulation of marine sediments contaminated by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The experimental activity was conducted with four PAHs (i.e. phenanthrene, anthracene, fluoranthene and pyrene) under controlled mesophilic conditions (37 ± 1 °C) in 100 mL serum bottles maintained at 130 rpm. After 120 days of incubation, the highest total PAH degradation of 53 and 55% was observed in the experiments with digestate + nutrients and OFMSW + nutrients, respectively. Phenanthrene was the most degraded PAH and the highest removal of 69% was achieved with OFMSW + nutrients. The anaerobic PAH degradation proceeded through the accumulation of volatile fatty acids and the production of hydrogen and methane as biogas constituents. The highest cumulative biohydrogen production of 80 mL H2·g VS−1 was obtained when OFMSW was used as the sole amendment, whereas the highest biomethane yield of 140 mL CH4·g VS−1 was obtained with OFMSW + nutrients. The evolution of PAH removal during anaerobic digestion revealed a higher impact of the methanogenic phase rather than acidogenic phase on PAH degradation.
