    Abstract Reducing energy use through increased energy efficiency in production and consumption represents a crucial strategy by national governments for reaching their climate protection goals. Unfortunately, increasing the technological energy efficiency may raise the demand for these services (i.e., rebound effect). To provide appropriate proposals on how this undesired effect could be stopped or at least damped, the Experimental Vignette Methodology (EVM) represents a research methodology allowing the controlled experimental analysis of causal mechanisms underlying a rebound effect and the empirical evaluation of rebound-damping interventions without the high costs associated with (quasi-) experimental field studies. Based on the results of 12 studies, we are evaluating two types of vignette designs: (1) a single-vignette design theoretically based on an economic perspective on the rebound and (2) a double-vignette design theoretically based on Prospect Theory. Finally, we document how to imbed an experimental test of a psychological intervention's effectiveness. The findings underline the value of the EVM as a viable methodological strategy for analyzing and understanding rebound affine situations and appropriate intervention strategies.

    Abstract Die besondere Bedeutung von persoenlichen wie sozialen Norm fuer umweltschonendes Verhalten konnte bereits bestaetigt werden, unklar bleibt in diesem Zusammenhang jedoch, inwieweit sich bisherige Befunde als kulturuebergreifend stabil erweisen. Gegenstand des vorliegenden Projektantrages ist daher die Analyse der kulturspezifischen Bedeutung von Normen fuer das Umwelthandeln. Auf Grund spezifischer Gegensaetze (kollektivistisch vs. individualistisch) und gleichzeitiger Gemeinsamkeiten (kapitalistisch-industriell) soll eine kulturvergleichende Studie in Japan und Deutschland durchgefuehrt werden. Es ist eine repraesentative Befragung in infrastrukturell vergleichbaren Staedten in Japan und Deutschland mit je 300 Personen geplant, in der neben persoenlichen und sozialen Normen u.a. auch das selbstberichtete Umwelthandeln fuer unterschiedliche Verhaltensbereiche sowie Verhaltenskosten- bzw. Barrieren erfasst werden sollen. Es ist zu pruefen, ob sich unterschiedliche Effekte von Normen (persoenliche vs. sozial) auf das Umwelthandeln fuer Japan und Deutschland finden lassen. Zusaetzlich sollen moegliche Unterschiede des Zusammenspiels von Normen und Verhaltenskosten (hoch-niedrig) fuer den Mobilitaetsbereich zwischen den Kulturen geprueft werden. Ueber den wissenschaftlichen Erkenntnisgewinn hinaus werden im Rahmen des Projekts Hinweise fuer eine Verbesserung der Kommunikation im Rahmen der internationalen Klimapolitik erwartet.

    Abstract Der Verkehr verursacht nicht nur direkt wahrnehmbare Umweltbelastungen wie Laerm und Flaechenverbrauch, sondern er bewirkt auch gravierende globale Umweltveraenderungen. Dennoch steigt der Pkw-Gesamtbestand in Deutschland kontinuierlich an. Eine umweltschonende Mobilitaet ist daher politisch gewuenscht und oekologisch notwendig. Anke Bloebaum stellt ein Handlungsmodell vor, das individuumsinterne und -externe Faktoren integriert und umweltpsychologische Forschungsbeitraege sowie stadt- und verkehrsplanerische Ansaetze zur Foerderung umweltschonenden Mobilitaetsverhaltens beruecksichtigt. In zwei empirischen Studien untersucht sie die kognitiven Bewertungsprozesse sowie eine Reihe physikalischer und subjektiv bedeutsamer Faktoren der individuellen Wohnumgebung und ueberprueft ihre Relevanz fuer das Mobilitaetsverhalten. Sie kommt zu dem Ergebnis, dass nur eine sinnvolle Kombination von kostenreduzierenden und bewusstseinsbildenden Massnahmen das Verhalten der Bevoelkerung nachhaltig zum Wohl der Umwelt veraendern kann.
