Abstract AbstractAn urban hydrological model (UHM) forced by radar-observed rainfalls was developed for producing rainstorm-related urban inundation maps for obtaining flash flood forecasts. The parameter sets of the land use and land cover (LULC) and urban drainage capacity derive from satellite multispectral images and high spatial resolution GIS datasets, relating to the urban hydrology and hydraulic properties. The hydrodynamics model was based on the simplified shallow water equation (SWE) neglecting the convective acceleration and pressure terms in the St. Venant equation. The intense convective rainstorm that induced heavy flash floods on 21 Jul. 2012 and the large-scale stratiform precipitation that occurred from 19 Jul. to 21 Jul. 2016 in Beijing were deliberately selected to perform flood-simulation and model-validation case studies. The simulation of severe flooding scenarios in the 2012 event was fairly reproduced and verified using media reports. In the case studies, the sensitivity tests verified that the flood intensity (1) would be enhanced slightly on pure impervious surfaces, (2) would be reduced significantly on pure pervious surfaces, and (3) would increase by 30%–60% without a drainage system. No false alarm could be perceived in the simulation of the 2016 event in a prolonging stratiform precipitation. The case studies confirmed the perspectives of using the hydrological model fed by QPEs/QPFs for flash flood forecasting and concluded that the hourly precipitation surpassing 30 mm/h would be indicative in impending flash floods in Beijing metropolis.

Abstract Abstract Dielectric behavior of salt aqueous solutions with various concentration in pristine and oxide graphene nanochannels has been investigated by means of molecular dynamic simulations. The motivation in performing this integrated set of simulations was to provide deep insight into the interaction between the size of the enclosure and the oxidation degree of the membrane sheets on the dielectric properties. It was shown that the dielectric permittivity of both aqueous and NaCl solution in confined phase exhibits an anisotropic behavior. The in-plane component decreases with the increase of the concentration of NaCl solution while an increase of the out-of-plane dielectric is observed and these out-of-plane components exhibit a non-monotonous trend and thus exist a critical concentration of NaCl solution with 0.2 mol/L and 0.4 mol/L for both pristine and oxide graphene nanochannels, respectively. This peculiar dielectric behavior results from the addition of ions that significantly perturb the hydrogen bonding network of the confined system, and hence leading to a fluctuation of dipolar of water molecules and dielectric permittivity.

Abstract Since 2020, with the global spread of major respiratory infectious diseases, such as COVID–19, the demand and consumption of personal protective equipment, such as masks, have increased dramatically worldwide. The environmental pollution caused by numerous waste disposable face masks has gradually attracted people’s attention. In this study, the mechanical properties of mask–chip–reinforced soil are evaluated from a new perspective, through the uniaxial, biaxial, conventional triaxial, and true triaxial compression tests on reshaped sandy soil samples mixed with different contents of mask chips. The experimental results show that the mechanical properties of the sandy soil can be improved by the mask chips. With the proper content of mask chips, the failure strength is substantially improved, and the failure of soil is delayed. Meanwhile, the strength and stiffness are significantly affected by the stress path and the content of mask chips, even if the soil samples with the same mask–chip content can also show different mechanical properties under different stress paths. Additionally, the mechanical properties of soil are not necessarily improved constantly with the increasing content of mask chips. The failure strength of sandy soil samples under conventional and true triaxial stress paths decreases when the mass content of mask chips exceeds 0.3% and 0.5%, respectively. This study confirms the potential of mask chips applied to subgrade, slope, and other engineering construction fields in a sustainable way.

Abstract Blind Image Quality Assessment (BIQA) for synthetic and authentic distortions has attracted much attention in the community, and it is still a great challenge. The existing quality metrics are mildly consistent with subjective perception. Traditional handcrafted quality metrics can easily and directly extract low-level features, which mainly account for the outline, edge, color, texture, and shape features, while ignoring the important deep semantics of the distorted image. In the field of popular deep learning, multilevel features can be acquired easily. However, most of them either use only high-level features, ignoring the shallow features, or they simply combine features at different levels, resulting in limited prediction performance. Motivated by these, this paper presents a novel BIQA for synthetic and authentic distortions with hierarchical feature fusion in a flexible vision-Transformer framework. First, multiscale features are extracted from a strong vision-Transformer backbone. Second, an effective hierarchical feature fusion module is proposed to incorporate the features at different levels progressively. To eliminate redundant information, a simple but effective attention mechanism is employed after each fusion. Third, inspired by the human visual system, local and global features from the fusion features are extracted to represent different granularity distortions. Finally, these local and global features are mapped to the final quality score. Extensive experiments on three authentic image databases and two synthetic image datasets show that the proposed method is superior to the state-of-the-art quality metrics for both single-database testing and cross-database testing.

Abstract In order to sustainably use coal resources and reduce coal mine accidents, the stability evaluation of roadway roofs is particularly important. The existing methods of roof stability evaluation and control application are greatly disjointed, the relationship between roof stability evaluation and early warning control is ignored, and an intelligent evaluation and calculation control system is lacking. Based on the successful application of the roof-cutting non-pillar mining method in various engineering geology and mining conditions, the roof stability evaluation system, mobile intelligent computing system, and engineering application research are carried out. An evaluation index system for roof stability in the roof-cutting non-pillar mining method is established, including the roof rock integrity and the roof-surrounding rock displacement. A comprehensive evaluation method for roof stability grades is proposed based on the coupling of evaluation index grading criteria and improved analytic hierarchy process (AHP) weight assignment. A handheld mobile intelligent platform for roof stability evaluation, roof hazard zone, and control suggestion is developed. The research results have been applied in the coal mine of Hecaogou with good outcomes. This intelligent stability evaluation system will provide an economical and effective approach to achieving sustainable use of coal resources.

Abstract In a thermoelectric coupling energy system, renewable energy is often curtailed by the uncertainty of the power generation. Besides, the integration of renewable energy is restricted by the inflexible operation of combined heat and power units due to the strong coupling relationship between power generation and heating supply, especially in winter. Utilization of the district heating network, a heat storage feature, is a cost-effective measure to improve the overall system operational flexibility. In this paper, a new heat characteristic index is proposed in a district heating system, which is applied to measure the impact of the flexibility of combined heat and power units’ output. Furthermore, in order to increase the reliability of an electric power system, a probabilistic model of combined heat and power units’ spinning reserves capacity related to confidence level K is established. What is more, the two indexes K and thermal characteristic index have a coupled relationship. In addition, for model solving methodology, the discretized step transformation and constant mass flow and variables temperature method is adopted to transform the non-linear system model into linear programming form. Case studies are carried out to show the linkage between system costs, K and thermal characteristic index. The optimal result can achieve balance among the system reliability, flexibility and economy.

Abstract To effectively minimize elevator safety accidents, big data technology is combined with deep learning technology based on the Spark platform. This study first introduces the relevant theories of elevator safety monitoring technology, namely big data technology and deep learning technology. Then, the fault types that occur in the running state of the elevator are identified, and a finite state machine model is established. An elevator fault monitoring method based on the Spark platform is proposed, namely finite state machine (FSM), and the results of elevator safety fault monitoring are evaluated. Based on deep learning, an elevator fault warning model is constructed and its early warning performance is evaluated. The results show that the study can realize real-time and effective monitoring in the operation state of the elevator, and can determine the fault type of the elevator by binding the abnormal operation state with the corresponding fault. The feasibility of the elevator safety monitoring efficiency is evaluated based on three indexes: mutual information, accuracy, and false positives. Compared with other algorithms, the proposed FSM algorithm has the largest mutual information (0.1337), the highest accuracy (0.9899), the lowest false positive rate (0.0624), and the lowest false negative rate (0.1126); compared with other models, the elevator fault warning model proposed in this study has the lowest root mean-square error (RMSE) value (0.0201), the highest accuracy (0.9834), the lowest Loss value (0.0012), and the shortest convergence time (88.2608s), indicating that the elevator safety monitoring system and elevator fault warning model are feasible. This study establishes a good direction for elevator safety monitoring efficiency in China.
