Abstract The present article studies the role of functional groups from waste brewery yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells in the bioadsorption of Cd2+, Zn2+ and Cu2+ ions. In order to clarify the role played by these functional groups, the brewery yeast was pretreated chemically, thereby helping to determine the mechanisms responsible for binding the target metals. SEM studies were performed to examine the surface microstructure of the adsorbent in pure as well as pretreated forms. The biomass was characterized using FTIR analysis, which indicated that hydroxyl, carboxyl and amid groups are present on the biomass surface. When carboxyl groups were modified by different chemical treatments, the adsorption capacity decreased dramatically, showing that carboxyl groups play a fundamental role in the bioadsorption process. The residual metallic ion concentrations were determined using an Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS). Pseudo-first and second order kinetic models were used to describe the bioadsorption process.

Abstract In the present study the biosorption characteristics of Cd (II) and Zn (II) ions from monocomponent aqueous solutions by Agaricus bisporus macrofungus were investigated. The initial metal ion concentrations, contact time, initial pH and temperature were parameters that influence the biosorption. Maximum removal efficiencies up to 76.10% and 70.09% (318 K) for Cd (II) and Zn (II), respectively and adsorption capacities up to 3.49 and 2.39 mg/g for Cd (II) and Zn (II), respectively at the highest concentration, were calculated. The experimental data were analyzed using pseudo-first- and pseudo-second-order kinetic models, various isotherm models in linear and nonlinear (CMA-ES optimization algorithm) regression and thermodynamic parameters were calculated. The results showed that the biosorption process of both studied metal ions, followed pseudo second-order kinetics, while equilibrium is best described by Sips isotherm. The changes in morphological structure after heavy metal-biomass interactions were evaluated by SEM analysis. Our results confirmed that macrofungus A. bisporus could be used as a cost effective, efficient biosorbent for the removal of Cd (II) and Zn (II) from aqueous synthetic solutions.

Abstract The present study investigates the biosorption of cadmium ions from aqueous solution onto unmodified, ultrasound and microwave treated cells of Saccharomyces cerevisiae . FTIR analysis was conducted to characterize the biosorbent. Equilibrium and kinetic studies of unmodified RBW (residual brewery waste) cell yeast and DSM 1333 (pure strain) were conducted by considering the effect of initial cadmium ions concentration. Results showed that the ultrasound and microwave treatments decrease the heavy metal uptake compared with the unmodified biomass. Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models on both unmodified yeast cell types were used to analyze the equilibrium data. It was found that the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetics models describe better the cadmium ions removal process.

Abstract The aim of this study was to investigate the concentrations and pollution levels of heavy metals, organochlorine pesticides, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in marine sediments from the Leghorn Harbor (Italy) on the Mediterranean Sea. The phytoextraction capacity of three aquatic plants Salvinia natans, Vallisneria spiralis, and Cabomba aquatica was also tested in the removal of lead and copper, present in high concentration in these sediments. The average detectable concentrations of metals accumulated by the plants in the studied area were as follows: >3.328±0.032mg/kg dry weight (DW) of Pb and 2.641±0.014mg/kg DW of Cu for S. natans, >3.107±0.034g/kg DW for V. spiralis, and >2.400±0.029mg/kg DW for C. aquatica. The occurrence of pesticides was also analyzed in the sediment sample by gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC/MS).Due to its metal and organic compound accumulation patterns, S. natans is a potential candidate in phytoextraction strategies.
