Abstract The applied bioanalytical assays used for the evaluation of human immune responses from samples collected during clinical trials must be well characterized, fully validated and properly documented to provide reliable results. Even though recommendations for the standardization of flow cytometry instrumentation and assay validation for its clinical application have been published by several organizations, definitive guidelines are not available yet. The aim of the present paper is to provide a validation approach for flow cytometry, examining parameters such as linearity, relative accuracy, repeatability, intermediate precision, range and detection limits and specificity, in order to demonstrate and document its applicability for clinical research purposes and its possible use as one of the methods for the evaluation of vaccine immunogenicity.

Abstract The validation of a bioanalytical method allows us to determine its validity for a designated purpose and to guarantee the reliability of its analytical results. The virus neutralization assay has proved to be suitable for the detection and quantification of specific serum-neutralizing antibodies against respiratory syncytial virus subtypes A and B. Respiratory syncytial virus is a negative-sense RNA virus and is responsible for the majority of acute lower respiratory tract infections in infants and older adults worldwide. Owing to its widespread infection, the WHO considers it a target for the development of preventive vaccines. Despite the high impact of its infections, however, only one vaccine has been recently approved. The aim of this paper is to provide a detailed validation process for the microneutralization assay and to demonstrate that this method can effectively support the efficacy assessment of candidate vaccines and the definition of correlates of protection.

Abstract "After having examined the relations between the partial net migration and the corresponding total net migration, an attempt is made to identify some indicators...of inter-regional mobility, considering the size of the total net migration in relation to all the net migrations with other territorial units. Attention is particularly focused on two indicators: the index of net regional migratory interchange, and the index of net total migratory interchange...." Abstract The geography, economy, and international migration structure in and between many countries have radically changed over the 1980s to produce a far more interdependent international picture. Concurrently, demographic, economic, social, and political push factors in countries of migrant origin have increased while demand for immigrants in destination countries has decreased. Formerly exporters of labor and families, Italy, Spain, and Greece have recently began to be destinations of immigration. In the attempt to stem the tide of new immigrants in keeping with domestic absorptive capacity, political forces, and European Community migration policy norms, Italy increased controls on immigration flows from the South and adopted migration policy similar to that of other European countries. Regular entrance is permitted to only refugees, family members of regular immigrants, and workers with qualifications not present on the national labor market. Once in the country, they are permitted social and civil, but not political rights. Despite these moves, the extent of illegal immigration has increased. Instead of attempting to control the labor market and borders, Italy should work to foster international and multinational cooperative agreements aimed at addressing and reducing the root causes of illegal immigration. Sections also discuss the size and origin of immigration from the Third World; reasons and characteristics of immigration from the Third World; and Italian society faced with immigration.

Titelübersetzung Return migrations in the Italian migration system: a reexamination.
Abstract The authors discuss trends in return migration in Italy, with a focus on regional differences. "On a regional level, the effects of return migration are very much connected with socio-economic structure. Only highly developed and autonomous regions can absorb productive investments and changes brought about by return migration. Several southern regions--especially those with greater migration experience--have shown in the last decades a very poor socio-economic development." The study is concerned with both internal and international migration. (SUMMARY IN ENG AND FRE)
