Abstract A major issue for many applications of blockchain technology is the tension between immutability and compliance to regulations. For instance, the GDPR in the EU requires to guarantee, under some circumstances, the right to be forgotten. This could imply that at some point one might be forced to delete some data from a locally stored blockchain, therefore irreparably hurting the security and transparency of such decentralized platforms. Motivated by such data protection and consistency issues, in this work we design and implement a mechanism for securely deleting data from Bitcoin blockchain. We use zero-knowledge proofs to allow any node to delete some data from Bitcoin transactions, still preserving the public verifiability of the correctness of the spent and spendable coins. Moreover, we specifically use STARK proofs to exploit the transparency that they provide. Our solution, unlike previous approaches, avoids the complications of asking nodes to reach consensus on the content to delete. In particular, our design allows every node to delete some specific data without coordinating this decision with others. In our implementation, data removal can be performed (resp., verified) in minutes (resp., seconds) on a standard laptop rather than in days as required in previous designs based on consensus.

Abstract A major problem in blockchain-based supply chain management is the potential unreliability of digital twins when considering digital representations of physical goods. Indeed, the use of blockchain technology to trace goods is obviously ineffective if there is no strong correspondence between what is physically exchanged and the digital information that appears in blockchain transactions. In this work, we propose a model for strengthening the supply chain management of physical goods by leveraging blockchain technology along with a digital-twin verification feature. Our model can be instantiated in various scenarios and we have in particular considered the popular case of food traceability. In contrast to other models known in the literature that propose their own ad-hoc properties to assess the robustness of their supply chain management systems, in this work we use the formalism of secure computation, where processes are described through generic and natural ideal functionalities.

Abstract The primary goal of genome-wide association studies (GWAS) is to discover variants that could lead, in isolation or in combination, to a particular trait or disease. Standard approaches to GWAS, however, are usually based on univariate hypothesis tests and therefore can account neither for correlations due to linkage disequilibrium nor for combinations of several markers. To discover and leverage such potential multivariate interactions, we propose in this work an extension of the Random Forest algorithm tailored for structured GWAS data. In terms of risk prediction, we show empirically on several GWAS datasets that the proposed T-Trees method significantly outperforms both the original Random Forest algorithm and standard linear models, thereby suggesting the actual existence of multivariate non-linear effects due to the combinations of several SNPs. We also demonstrate that variable importances as derived from our method can help identify relevant loci. Finally, we highlight the strong impact that quality control procedures may have, both in terms of predictive power and loci identification. Variable importance results and T-Trees source code are all available at www.montefiore.ulg.ac.be/~botta/ttrees/ and github.com/0asa/TTree-source respectively.

Abstract Improved oncological outcomes after cytoreductive surgery (CRS) with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) in highly selected patients have been well documented. The extensive nature of the procedure adversely affects quality of life (QoL). The aim of this study is to longitudinally evaluate QoL following CRS/HIPEC. This is a retrospective review of a prospectively maintained database of patients with peritoneal malignancies undergoing CRS/HIPEC. Clinicopathological data, oncologic outcomes, and QoL were analyzed preoperatively and postoperatively at 2 weeks, and 1, 3, 6, and 12 months. The Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Colorectal instrument was used to determine changes in QoL after CRS/HIPEC and the impact of early recurrence (<12 months) on QoL. Thirty-six patients underwent CRS/HIPEC over 36 months. The median peritoneal cancer index score was 18 and the completeness of cytoreduction-0/1 rate was 97.2 per cent. Postoperative major morbidity was 16.7 per cent with one perioperative death. Disease-free survival was 12.6 months in patients with high-grade tumors versus 31.0 months in those with low-grade tumors (P = 0.03). QoL decreased postoperatively and improved to baseline in six months. Patients with early recurrence had a decrease in global QoL compared with preoperative QoL at 6 (P < 0.03) and 12 months (P < 0.05). This correlation was not found in patients who had not recurred. Patients who undergo CRS/HIPEC have a decrease in QoL that plateaus in 3 to 6 months. Early recurrence adversely impacts QoL at 6 and 12 months. This study emphasizes the importance of patient selection for CRS/HIPEC. The expected QoL trajectory in patients at risk for early recurrence must be carefully weighed against the potential oncological benefit of CRS/HIPEC.

Abstract Background: New epidemiological data on bacterial and parasitic infections in 24 Italian wall lizards, namely Podarcis sicula (mainland population) and P. sicula klemmerii (insular population) in southern Italy were provided. To achieve this goal, samples were collected from individuals belonging to the two populations and analysed by microbiological and parasitological methods.
Results: A wide range of bacteria (e.g. Pantoea spp., Citrobacter spp., Morganella spp., Pseudomonas, Enterobacter spp., Staphylococcus spp. and Escherichia coli) and parasites (e.g. Ophionyssus natricis, coccidia, Dicrocoelidae) were detected in both P. sicula and P. sicula klemmerii individuals. Insular population presented similar bacterial and parasitic diversity to its mainland counterpart. Ampicillin was the antimicrobial with the highest resistance rate.
Conclusion: This study highlighted various bacteria and parasites, some of them potentially zoonotic. Further studies are needed to better understand the epidemiology and transmission routes of these pathogens along with their impact on the welfare and behaviour of Italian wall lizards.
