Abstract Functional homogenization can be defined as a simplification of functional communities or species traits over time. The purpose of this review was to summarize the existing quantitative evaluations of functional homogenization (FH) in aquatic ecosystems, as well as to propose a framework to guide future research. Few articles have quantitatively evaluated FH to date. Although FH is an expected pattern in most studies given the anthropogenic impacts of the Anthropocene era, the result depends on the same factors, like temporal and spatial scales and biological groups. Largely, fish were the most investigated, freshwater was the most evaluated ecosystem, and within these, FH patterns were frequently evidenced with relatively lower connectivity, and were usually associated with an increase in generalist non-native species. The poor link between traits and ecosystem functioning in most studies highlights the need for a better definition of functional measurements for several biological groups. We urge standardized monitoring studies and further research in marine and estuarine ecosystems. Studies on cross-taxa effects as well as a better choice of complementary traits should be encouraged. For that, we suggested a framework to serve as a guide for future studies, to better inform the management and conservation of ecosystem services.

Abstract In the present paper, we document a recent record of the Bannerfish, Heniochus acuminatus, an Indo-Pacific species, in the southwest Atlantic Ocean and comment on biological aspects of the Azores Chromis, Chromis limbata, an invasive reef fish in the western Atlantic Ocean. We suggest that investigations of invasive species along the Brazilian coast can use data provided by citizen science, strengthening the non-native reef fish control strategies.

Abstract Negative interactions have been suggested as a major barrier for species arriving in a new habitat. More recently, positive interactions drew attention from community assembly theory and invasion science. The invasional meltdown hypothesis (IMH) introduced the idea that positive interactions among non-native species could facilitate one another’s invasion, even increasing their impact upon the native community. Many studies have addressed IMH, but with contrasting results, reflecting various types of evidence on a multitude of scales. Here we use the hierarchy-of-hypotheses (HoH) approach to differentiate key aspects of IMH, organizing and linking empirical studies to sub-hypotheses of IMH. We also assess the level of empirical support for each sub-hypothesis based on the evidence reported in the studies. We identified 150 studies addressing IMH. The majority of studies support IMH, but the evidence comes from studies with different aims and questions. Supporting studies at the community or ecosystem level are currently rare. Evidence is scarce for marine habitats and vertebrates. Few sub-hypotheses are questioned by more than 50% of the evaluated studies, indicating that non-native species do not affect each other’s survival, growth, reproduction, abundance, density or biomass in reciprocal A ↔ B interactions. With the HoH for IMH presented here, we can monitor progress in empirical tests and evidences of IMH. For instance, more tests at the community and ecosystem level are needed, as these are necessary to address the core of this hypothesis.

Abstract Longitudinal size segregation and reproductive aspects of Mimagoniates microlepis were studied along the catchment of the Piraquara River, a tributary of the Iguaçu River. Monthly fish sampling were completed at four sites along a longitudinal gradient. In addition, we summarized and compared key species-ecological traits of three different populations of this species. Data from the two additional populations were obtained from the literature. Our findings concerning population structure and reproduction of this species demonstrate that ontogenetic migration occurs within this population. During flash floods small individuals (C1) are carried to downstream habitats (P1). As they grow, we assume that their swimming capacity tends to increase and they are able to explore upstream habitats. This ontogenetic migration dynamic is a common and underexplored pattern for small stream fish in the Neotropics, and it helps to ensure, as a consequence, the long term persistence of the population along the entire hydrographic basin. Therefore, the alteration of only one portion of the river can compromise the entire migration process and consequently the entire population. In addition, the present study is the only source of ecological information for this population from before the recent construction of the Piraquara II dam. This reinforces the urgent need for conservation strategies for this population of M. microlepis and other similar populations or species.

Abstract In the current era of Big Data, existing synthesis tools such as formal meta-analyses are critical means to handle the deluge of information. However, there is a need for complementary tools that help to (a) organize evidence, (b) organize theory, and (c) closely connect evidence to theory. We present the hierarchy-of-hypotheses (HoH) approach to address these issues. In an HoH, hypotheses are conceptually and visually structured in a hierarchically nested way where the lower branches can be directly connected to empirical results. Used for organizing evidence, this tool allows researchers to conceptually connect empirical results derived through diverse approaches and to reveal under which circumstances hypotheses are applicable. Used for organizing theory, it allows researchers to uncover mechanistic components of hypotheses and previously neglected conceptual connections. In the present article, we offer guidance on how to build an HoH, provide examples from population and evolutionary biology and propose terminological clarifications.

Abstract The impact of human activity is evident in the depletion of fish populations worldwide. This being the case, there is an urgent need to discover the true biodiversity of the world before the loss rate exceeds its limits. Because the feeding ecology of a species is thoroughly linked to its population dynamics, knowledge of the feeding ecology contributes to the understanding of such subjects as resource partitioning, habitat preferences, prey selection, predation, evolution, competition and energy transfer within and between ecosystems. Such ecological information is of great value when developing conservation strategies and is, therefore, a key element in the protection of species and ecosystems. Our paper reviews the geographic and/or biogeographic regions where the majority of studies concerning the feeding ecology of fish have been conducted, with the goal of identifying regions and/or environments in need of further attention. In addition, we identify which journals published more papers regarding the subject. Our analysis was conducted by assessing studies indexed on the ISI Web of Science database. We detected a lack of data concerning several aspects of the feeding of fish, such as: threatened species; freshwater habitats especially within the Neotropical, Ethiopian and Oriental realms; species rich developing countries; and, when considering marine fish, the Eastern Indo-Pacific region. Considering the calculated weight for each journal, Ecology of Freshwater Fish, Neotropical Ichthyology and Environmental Biology of Fishes were the most important ones. If we ignore these gaps in our knowledge we run the risk of losing a huge amount of information without knowing it ever existed, especially in the fast changing world we face today.

Abstract The Neotropical region hosts 4225 freshwater fish species, ranking first among the world's most diverse regions for freshwater fishes. Our NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set is the first to produce a large‐scale Neotropical freshwater fish inventory, covering the entire Neotropical region from Mexico and the Caribbean in the north to the southern limits in Argentina, Paraguay, Chile, and Uruguay. We compiled 185,787 distribution records, with unique georeferenced coordinates, for the 4225 species, represented by occurrence and abundance data. The number of species for the most numerous orders are as follows: Characiformes (1289), Siluriformes (1384), Cichliformes (354), Cyprinodontiformes (245), and Gymnotiformes (135). The most recorded species was the characid Astyanax fasciatus (4696 records). We registered 116,802 distribution records for native species, compared to 1802 distribution records for nonnative species. The main aim of the NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set was to make these occurrence and abundance data accessible for international researchers to develop ecological and macroecological studies, from local to regional scales, with focal fish species, families, or orders. We anticipate that the NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set will be valuable for studies on a wide range of ecological processes, such as trophic cascades, fishery pressure, the effects of habitat loss and fragmentation, and the impacts of species invasion and climate change. There are no copyright restrictions on the data, and please cite this data paper when using the data in publications.

Abstract The Neotropical region hosts 4225 freshwater fish species, ranking first among the world's most diverse regions for freshwater fishes. Our NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set is the first to produce a large-scale Neotropical freshwater fish inventory, covering the entire Neotropical region from Mexico and the Caribbean in the north to the southern limits in Argentina, Paraguay, Chile, and Uruguay.
