    Abstract Few reports describing an association between UV radiation and fixed skin eruptions have been published since 1975. These reactions have received various names, including fixed sunlight eruption, fixed exanthema due to UV radiation, and broad-spectrum abnormal localized photosensitivity syndrome. We present a series of 13 patients (4 men [30.8%] and 9 women [69.2%]) aged between 28 and 56 years who were evaluated for fixed eruptions induced by UV radiation at a dermatology referral hospital in Bogotá, Colombia. The lesions were located on the inner thighs, buttocks, popliteal region, anterior and posterior axilla, and dorsum of the feet. Photoprovocation reproduced lesions in all the affected areas, and histopathology showed changes similar to those seen in fixed drug eruptions. While these UV-provoked reactions may be a type of fixed skin eruption, we cannot rule out that they may also be a distinct condition that simply shares a pathogenic mechanism with fixed eruptions.

    Abstract Meat production is a complex system, continually receiving animals, water, air, and workers, all of which serve as carriers of bacteria. Selective pressures involved in different meat processing stages such as antimicrobial interventions and low temperatures, may promote the accumulation of certain residential microbiota in meat cutting facilities. Bacteria including human pathogens from all these sources can contaminate meat surfaces. While significant advancements have been made in enhancing hygienic standards and pathogen control measures in meat plants, resulting in a notable reduction in STEC recalls and clinical cases, STEC still stands as a predominant contributor to foodborne illnesses associated with beef and occasionally with pork. The second-and third-generation sequencing technology has become popular in microbiota related studies and provided a better image of the microbial community in the meat processing environments. In this article, we reviewed the potential factors influencing the microbial ecology in commercial meat processing facilities and conducted a meta-analysis on the microbiota data published in the last 10 years. In addition, the mechanisms by which bacteria persist in meat production environments have been discussed with a focus on the significant human pathogen

    Abstract The evolution of sexual size dimorphism (SSD) is a long-standing topic in evolutionary biology, but there is little agreement on the extent to which SSD is driven by the different selective forces. While sexual selection and fecundity selection have traditionally been proposed as the two leading hypotheses, SSD may also result from natural selection through mechanisms such as sexual niche divergence, which might have reduced resource competition between sexes. Here, we revisited the niche divergence hypothesis by testing the relationship between the sexual overlap in diet and SSD of 56 bird species using phylogenetic comparative analyses. We then assessed how SSD variation relates to the three main hypotheses: sexual selection, fecundity selection, and sexual niche divergence using phylogenetic generalized least squares (PGLS). Then, we compared sexual selection, fecundity selection and niche divergence selection as SSD drivers through phylogenetic confirmatory path analyses to disentangle the possible causal evolutionary relationships between SSD and the three hypotheses. Phylogenetic generalized least squares showed that SSD was negatively correlated with diet overlap, that is, the greater the difference in body size between males and females, the less diet overlap. As predicted by sexual selection theory, the difference in body size between sexes was higher in polygynous species. Confirmatory phylogenetic path analyses suggested that the most likely evolutionary path might include the mating system as a main driver in SSD and niche divergence as a result of SSD. We found no evidence of a role of fecundity selection in the evolution of female-biased SSD. Our study provides evidence that sexual selection has likely been the main cause of SSD and that dietary divergence is likely an indirect effect of SSD.

    Abstract Precipitation in the tropics is dominated by variability on seasonal, intraseasonal and diurnal scales. However, at the finest spatial scales, this variability can be strongly modulated by numerous local factors that represent a range of physical processes. One aspect of this modulation that operates across multiple scales is the orientation of coastal and inland topography relative to the background wind. This is particularly relevant where complex topography occurs in the vicinity of tropical coastlines, which can cause local changes in moisture flux convergence. Another aspect is the coupling of the diurnal cycle to changes in surface heating, surface moisture, column moisture, background wind and cloudiness. This link between clouds, radiation and diurnally forced convection forges a two-way interaction between the intraseasonal scales and mesoscale variability. Further to these modulating factors, propagating disturbances from neighbouring coastlines, and interactions between coastal processes across adjacent seas introduces a non-local mesoscale source of variability, particularly amidst the complex archipelago of the Maritime Continent. These processes also occur outside the deep tropics, where the added complexity of mid-latitude interactions contributes to the overall variation in precipitation. Multiple spatial and temporal scales are impacted by these competing sources of variability, which presents a challenge in quantifying their representation and impact in weather and climate models. This has implications for weather prediction and down-scaling of climate change projections. This talk will examine some of the local manifestations of scale-interactions in tropical Queensland (Australia) and the Maritime Continent, using diverse observational datasets and high-resolution numerical modelling.

    Abstract Background: External root resorption (ERR) has a multifactorial etiology and is difficult to diagnose, which means that is continues to be of research interest. This work mainly aims to determine whether external root resorption can be differentially detected in root-filled versus non-endodontically treated teeth using digital periapical radiography (DPR) and cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT).
    Methods: The Checklist for Reporting In-vitro Studies (CRIS) guidelines were followed throughout this study. This experiment highlights the preparation and generation of standardized synthetic teeth measured on three-dimensional records converted into Digital Imaging and Communication on Medicine (DICOM) file format. Twelve replicate maxillary incisors were randomized into two groups: (G1) six non-endodontically treated, and (G2) six endodontically treated teeth. In both groups, actual tooth lengths of all specimens were measured and compared with measurements obtained using DPR and CBCT. Simulated ERR lesions [0.12, 0.18, 0.20 mm × 0.5 mm depth in the mesial, distal and palatal apical regions] were created progressively, radiographic images were recorded, and 24 DPRs and 96 CBCTs were obtained in total. Eight blinded, previously calibrated researchers made a total of 1920 measurements (using Horos Software). Data were analyzed using the Shapiro-Wilk, ANOVA, Kruskal-Wallis and Wilcoxon rank post-hoc tests [Bonferroni correction in multiple comparison tests (p < 0.05)].
    Results: ICC values for intra- and inter-examiner agreement were appropriate. DPR overestimated ERR detection compared to the actual and CBCT measurements [Mean diff = 0.765 and 0.768, respectively]. CBCT diagnosis of ERR lesions in specimens without root canal treatment was significantly more accurate than DPR diagnoses on both non-endodontically and endodontically-treated specimens [p = 0.044; p = 0.037, respectively]. There was an 18.5% reduction in sensitivity in all DPR diagnoses made on endodontic teeth versus those made on non-endodontically treated teeth. For the smallest ERR lesions, this sensitivity was even more marked, with 27.8 and 25% less sensitivity, respectively.
    Conclusions: The results of this study highlight that both CBCT and DPR are good diagnostic methods for ERR. Nevertheless, root canal filling material influences diagnostic capability in ERR. The clinical significance was that the presence of intracanal material reduces the detection and diagnosis of ERR by DPR in teeth with root canal treatment.

    Abstract Coordinative chain transfer polymerization, CCTP, is a degenerative chain transfer polymerization process that has a wide range of applications. It allows a highly controlled synthesis of polyolefins, stereoregular polydienes, and stereoregular polystyrene, including (stereo)block as well as statistical copolymers thereof. It also shows a green character by allowing catalyst economy during the synthesis of such polymers. CCTP notably allows the end functionalization of both the commodity and stereoregular specialty polymers aforementionned, control of the composition of statistical copolymers without adjusting the feed, and quantitative formation of 1-alkenes from ethene. A one-pot one-step synthesis of the original multiblock microstructures and architectures by chain shuttling polymerization (CSP) is also an asset of CCTP. This methodology takes advantage of the simultaneous presence of two catalysts of different selectivity toward comonomers that produce blocks of different composition/microstructure, while still allowing the chain transfer. This affords the production of highly performant functional polymers, such as thermoplastic elastomers and adhesives, among others. This approach has been extended to cyclic esters' and ethers' ring-opening polymerization, providing new types of multiblock microstructure. The present Review provides the state of the art in the field with a focus on the last 10 years.
