Abstract Mechanistic models predicting copper (Cu) toxicity to aquatic biota in natural waters require organic and inorganic water chemistry, and quantified values for Cu binding by sensitive biological receptors. In bioaccumulation experiments using larval fathead minnows (FHM; Pimephales promelas), we investigated time to asymptotic accumulation of Cu and quantified the conditional stability constants (binding affinity; log KCu-FHM) and binding-site densities of Cu-FHM complexation. Cu bioaccumulation increased rapidly, approaching an asymptote in exposures longer than 12 h, indicating that Cu loading at 24 h is an appropriate exposure duration for modeling Cu complexation by larval FHM. Results of Langmuir and Scatchard analyses of other bioaccumulation experiments produced log KCu-FHM values of 6.52, and binding-site densities of 0.39 μmol g-1 dry weight. These whole-body log KCu-FHM values are approximately an order of magnitude lower than those reported for adult FHM gills. However, binding-site densities for larval and adult FHM are similar. Under similar test conditions, comparable concentrations of aqueous Cu cause 50% mortality in adult and larval FHM suggesting that binding site densities determine comparable metal-tissue loadings and have greater influence on Cu bioavailability than binding affinity.

Abstract Substantial control of the interlayer spacing in Bi-based high temperature superconductors has been achieved through the intercalation of guest molecules between the superconducting layers. Measurements using implanted muons reveal that the penetration depth increases with increasing layer separation while T_{c} does not vary appreciably, demonstrating that the bulk superfluid density is not the determining factor controlling T_{c}. Our results strongly suggest that for Bi-based high temperature superconductors the superfluid density appearing in the Uemura scaling relation rho_{s} proportional, variantT_{c} should be interpreted as the two-dimensional density within the superconducting layers, which we find to be constant for each class of system investigated.

Abstract Zero-field muon-spin relaxation measurements of the frustrated triangular quantum magnet AgNiO2 are consistent with a model of charge disproportionation that has been advanced to explain the structural and magnetic properties of this compound. Below an ordering temperature of TN=19.9(2) K we observe six distinct muon precession frequencies, due to the magnetic order, which can be accounted for with a model describing the probable muon sites. The precession frequencies show an unusual temperature evolution which is suggestive of the separate evolution of two opposing magnetic sublattices.

Abstract The proportion of outpatients with concurrent medical and psychiatric problems is high and is expected to increase, but coordination of services has not been satisfactory. The medical and psychiatric records of 28 patients under regular psychiatric and medical care were abstracted, for a total of 323 visits, to ascertain issues related to assessment and coordination of care. Results indicate that psychiatric therapists and primary-care providers do not perform satisfactorily in assessing medical and psychiatric problems, respectively, and in initiating coordination of their patients' health care. The implications of these findings for the training, education, and supervision of staff are discussed.

Abstract Suppression of the $J/\psi$ nuclear-modification factor has been seen as a trademark signature of final-state effects in large collision systems for decades. In small systems, the nuclear modification was attributed to cold-nuclear-matter effects until the observation of strong differential suppression of the $\psi(2S)$ state in $p/d$$+$$A$ collisions suggested the presence of final-state effects. Results of $J/\psi$ and $\psi(2S)$ measurements in the dimuon decay channel are presented here for $p$$+$$p$, $p$$+$Al, and $p$$+$Au collision systems at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV. The results are predominantly shown in the form of the nuclear-modification factor, $R_{pA}$, the ratio of the $\psi(2S)$ invariant yield per nucleon-nucleon collision in collisions of proton on target nucleus to that in $p$$+$$p$ collisions. Measurements of the $J/\psi$ and $\psi(2S)$ nuclear-modification factor are compared with shadowing and transport-model predictions, as well as to complementary measurements at Large-Hadron-Collider energies.

Abstract Trigeminal neuralgia is not a specific disease, but a symptom elicited by pathology involving the fifth cranial nerve. Advances in the field of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) have made this the premier imaging modality in the diagnostic workup of trigeminal neuralgia. This article reviews the pertinent anatomy of the trigeminal nerve as well as the structural lesions that produce the symptoms of the condition. The advantages of MRI over other imaging methods are outlined, and the indications for obtaining this study are discussed.
