Abstract Objective: To determine how frequently the current criteria for left ventricular enlargement in dogs misclassify healthy dogs as having left ventricular enlargement; to examine the effect of breed on diastolic left ventricular normalized dimensions (LVIDDN); to propose appropriate scaling exponents and reference limits for dogs.
Animals: Echocardiographic data from 1,124 healthy adult dogs, including 454 dogs weighing <20 kg.
Methods: We calculated power regression parameters (allometric scaling), including exponents and proportionality constants, for various subsets of the dogs (all dogs, dogs < 20 kg, generic dogs, and individual breeds with >10 observations) and derived upper reference limits for LVIDDN. We determined the proportions of dogs that would be identified as having left ventricular enlargement with each regression model compared to previously published reference limits or guidelines. We then identified breeds failing to conform to generic dog models.
Results: The American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine-recommended scaling exponent (0.294) and criterion for identifying left ventricular enlargement (1.7) identified >10% of apparently healthy dogs as having left ventricular enlargement, with specific breeds being misclassified up to 50% of the time. However, with a scaling exponent of 0.33, a constant of 1.7 represented a normal left ventricular size in 97.5% of healthy dogs in both generic and non-conforming breeds.
Conclusions: Left ventricular internal dimension in diastole normalized to bodyweight is breed-dependent. A constant of 1.7 with a scaling exponent of 0.294 does not always represent ventricular enlargement; a scaling exponent of 0.33, with breed-specific reference limits for breeds that fail to conform to allometric models of generic dogs, reduces the misclassification of healthy dogs as having left ventricular enlargement.

Abstract This review aims to provide a systematic analysis of the literature focused on the use of intelligent control systems in robotics for physical rehabilitation, identifying trends in recent research and comparing the effectiveness of intelligence used in control, with the aim of determining important factors in robot-assisted rehabilitation and how intelligent controller design can improve them. Seven electronic research databases were searched for articles published in the years 2015 - 2022 with articles selected based on relevance to the subject area of intelligent control systems in rehabilitation robotics. It was found that the most common use of intelligent algorithms for control is improving traditional control strategies with optimization and learning techniques. Intelligent algorithms are also commonly used in sensor output mapping, model construction, and for various data learning purposes. Experimental results show that intelligent controllers consistently outperform non-intelligent controllers in terms of transparency, tracking accuracy, and adaptability. Active participation of the patients and lowered interaction forces are consistently mentioned as important factors in improving the rehabilitation outcome as well as the patient experience. However, there are limited examples of studies presenting experimental results with impaired participants suffering limited range of motion, so the effectiveness of therapy provided by these systems is often difficult to quantify. A lack of universal evaluation criteria also makes it difficult to compare control systems outside of articles which use their own comparison criteria.

Abstract The pregnancy-specific disorder preeclampsia is believed to affect 2-8% of pregnancies worldwide. The only known cure is delivery of the fetus and placenta. This brief communication cites evidence that might suggest a moderately effective treatment for preeclampsia. The therapy consists of having the gravida with preeclampsia stay in a room provided with FACE (Free Air Carbon-dioxide Enrichment). No containment (such as in greenhouses) is required with FACE systems. Evidence is cited which suggests that the therapy might reduce the incidence of preeclampsia by perhaps 10-30% without much harm to the fetus.

Abstract Competition between languages affects the lives of people all over the globe, and a huge number of languages are at risk of extinction. In this work, statistical physics is applied to modelling the decline of one language in competition with another. A model from the literature is used and adapted to model the interactions among speakers in a population distribution over time, and is applied to historical data for Cornish and Welsh. Visual, geographical models show the simulated decline of the real languages studied, and a number of qualitative and quantitative features from the historical data are captured by the model. The applicability of the model to further real situations is discussed, as well as adaptations that would be needed to better take account of migration and population dynamics.
