Abstract Cold plasma disinfection is a cost-efficient and, above all, fast way of disinfecting even complex products. There are already approaches where plasma disinfection is used for wound treatment or hand disinfection. The ionization of a gas results in a number of physical and chemical processes that have a damaging effect on microorganisms. Especially in the field of medical device reprocessing, a tool that can reliably disinfect even very complex products in a short time would be a great asset. In this work, the potential of a newly developed cold plasma disinfection device was tested for the reduction of microbiological contamination and thus the disinfecting effect. In order to examine this microbiological reduction 3D printed scaffolds with contaminated test plates were used. This was done with different concentrations of the bacteria in the cold plasma disinfection process to determine the maximum germ reduction effect. In a first test run, the maximum effect of germ reduction was achieved with log 3.6. By making further changes and increasing the disinfection cycles, it was possible to increase the germ reduction to log 4.7. If these values are confirmed and can be improved by further modifications (e.g. increasing the plasma concentration), cold plasma technology represents a very good alternative to conventional disinfection methods.

Abstract Due to the corona pandemic, the demand for efficient and fast-acting disinfection measures is high. In this work, the disinfecting potential of a dry fogging technology (Apollon Biotech GmbH, Germany) was investigated for the possibility of disinfection of vehicles for passenger transport. This could represent a new approach for processing emergency vehicles or local passenger transport vehicles quickly and cost-effectively. A public bus was used as a model for a passenger transport vehicle (Ferienfahrschule Hense GbR, Germany). This vehicle was tested at predetermined points before and after dry-fog disinfection with swab and contact plate samples. In addition, contaminated sample tiles (Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538; 5x104 CFU) were placed at some locations in order to be able to record a standardized germ reduction. To determine the decontamination effect of the air in the vehicle, active airborne germ measurements were performed. In the airborne germ measurement, our results indicated a reduction of approx. 68% of the microbiological air contamination. Screening of the total contamination of the bus at several selected sites showed an average load of approximately 348 CFU per test site. After disinfection, the average bacterial count was reduced to approx. 18 CFU per test site. This disinfecting effect could also be shown with the standardized test tiles. An efficiency level of between log 0.8 and 3.7 was obtained at the various test sites.

Abstract Due to the fact that a relatively large area can be disinfected in a short time, dry-fog disinfection could have a great potential to improve hygienic measures. However, there are few studies to date on the effectiveness and combinability of this technology with other devices. In this work, the disinfecting potential of the TBT dry fogging technology (TBT Desinfektion GmbH & Co. KG, Germany) and the corresponding disinfectant Defeat AR (Biofluid GmbH, Germany) was examined with regard to microbiological decontamination and potential damaging effects on different devices. The airburden measurement did show a reduction of approx. 66% of the microbiological room contamination. Similarly, decontamination of test surfaces was shown to be effective at all measuring points we selected in the experimental setup. Depending on the accessibility of the surfaces this effect was in the range of several log levels. Nevertheless, a first test run showed that some technical equipment was negatively affected by the process.

Abstract Running is one of the most popular sports worldwide motivating many non-athletic people to start new physical activities. But especially novice runners are at risk to develop injuries as they tend to run with prejudicial posture. Hence, there has been considerable research to identify factors improving running performance. One of these factors is the correct movement of arms as a swinging pendulum during running. Based on this knowledge ergonomically shaped handgrip elements were designed to improve the posture of the shoulder-arm complex during running. The main objective of this study was the validation of the actual effectiveness on shoulder-arm posture of these handgrips. In this sense 25 adult, healthy persons without running experience were examined by motion capture analysis during running on a treadmill with and without the use of the handgrips. The focus of movement analysis was on changes of hand supination, shoulder abduction and shoulder rotation. Flexion of elbows and shoulders were not expected to change and thus, were investigated as an internal control. Significant changes were found in sense of a reduction of forearm pronation, shoulder abduction, and internal rotation of the shoulder, resulting in improved posture during running. At the same time, no significant changes were found in elbow flexion and shoulder flexion. Future studies are needed to investigate the effects of the detected improvement of arm posture on other important running parameters, such as trunk stability, movement of lower limbs, running economy, and risk of injury. These studies should also compare effects in competitive athletes, recreational runners, and novice runners.

Abstract The risk of infection from contaminated surfaces has already been shown in several publications. Due to the increased demand for optimized infection control measures during the Corona pandemic, antimicrobial surface technologies have gained more an interest. Apart from many proofs of efficacy, there are only a few studies dealing with the durability of these surface coatings with regard to the material and the reprocessing measures. This work did therefore examine the impact of different materials and surface textures, as well as different detergents and disinfectants, on the durability of antimicrobial surface technologies. Differently structured materials (glass, wood, plastics, metal) and wallpaper bonded to plasterboard were coated with an TiO2Ag based antimicrobial coating (HECOSOL GmbH, Bamberg). These test samples are then used to perform abrasion tests with various cleaning and disinfecting agents and cloth systems (microfiber cloth, cotton cloth, foam cloth). The majority of the test samples in our experimental setup showed at least significant activity. According to our results, both the selection of cleaning and disinfection methods including wiping systems and the surface material have a major impact on the durability of antimicrobial coatings. In order to be able to come to conclusions about the long-term activity of these surface technologies, the effectiveness should be tested not only during the development phase, but also in the finished product and again after several reprocessing cycles in use.

Abstract Antimicrobial surface coating of i.e. medical devices could contribute to infection prevention and reduction of hospital acquired infections (HAI). Recent studies showed a significant reduction in the microbial contamination of antimicrobial coated surfaces in clinical setups. Nevertheless, there are only few publications available that deal with the durability and stability of these coatings under routine clinical conditions. In this work different antimicrobial coating compositions were tested on different surfaces for their durability and remaining antimicrobial activity. Our results show that the durability and stability of a subsequent applied antimicrobial coating is strongly dependent on the chemical formulation of the coating and also the underlying surface condition. Whereas we could still detect remaining antimicrobial coating and activity on some samples after repeated abrasion testing, some other samples lost their coating and activity after only a few abrasion cycles. Interestingly the integrated antimicrobial substance in the 3-D printed samples showed strong antimicrobial activity even after rough treatment of the surfaces (brushing, scratching).
