Abstract This article explores the emerging institutionalization of collaborative university-industry networks in Russia. The Russian government has attempted to use a top-down public policy scheme to stimulate and promote network-building in the R&D sector. In order to understand the initial organizational responses that universities and companies select while structuring collaborations, the article utilizes conceptual perspectives from institutional theory, especially drawing on arguments from strategic choice, network-building, and network failure studies.

Abstract Many commercially successful innovations are now arising from basic research carried out at universities. The boundary between pure science and applied research is blurred. In this context, governments worldwide have been promoting the concept of synergy between basic research carried out in academic institutions and applied research in the commercial sector. By applying different models they are trying to establish the most efficient way of facilitating this relationship with funding from the private sector. In this article, we have explored the case of Russia and overviewed the effects of ‘innovation enforcement’ policy developed by the Russian government in the late 2000s. As our case demonstrates, the outcome of such a policy is rather negative. However, there are also some positive side effects of the current Russian public policy. One example is the practice of the shared-used equipment. It allows developing trust between university-private company and results in mutually beneficial partnership. Moreover, it stimulates changes in industrial vision of the academic partner. Hence, in some cases, the policy of ‘innovation by coercion’ can have positive outcomes for it forces academia and industry to see joint collaborations more as a help rather than as a hindrance.

Abstract The microbial test-system based on cultivation of Halobacterium salinarum developed earlier for screening inhibitors of sterol biosynthesis and proposed for screening anticancer antibiotics, proved to be efficient in revealing anticancer compounds among derivatives of tris(1-alkylindol-3-yl)methylium, synthetic analogues of antibiotic turbomycin A. Most of the methane sulfonate and chloride salts of such compounds, investigated with the help of the H. salinarum test-system, showed no activity (MIC>32 mcM), while several derivatives, containing N-butyl or N-pentyl substituents were rather active against the bacterial strain. The MICs of them against H. salinarum were 8 mcM for total and 1 mcM for partial inhibition of the bacterial growth. The results of the study correlated with the results of other investigations that revealed anticancer activity of such compounds in tumor cell cultures. Therefore, the H. salinarum test-system demonstrated its availability for screening compounds with anticancer activity.

Abstract Materials and methods: We conducted a comparative evaluation of anesthesia used during tracheal intubation with and without the application of muscle relaxants in cases of adenotonsillectomy in children. Intubation parameters were evaluated according to Cormack-Lehane scale; the presence of cough reflex, limb movement, laryngospasm and desaturation during intubation was also taken into account. The presence of cough, husky voice, and complaints of pain in the throat were recorded in the monitoring report after extubation. We used the MOPS scale to evaluate postoperative pain and discomfort in children.
Results: Tracheal intubation in children with adenotonsillectomy without the use of muscle relaxants was successfid in 100% of the cases, despite the fact that, according to the Cormack-Lehane classification, first degree of visualisation of the glottis during direct laryngoscopy was observed in 79.3% of the cases and the second degree was observed in 20.7% of the cases. No significant reactions in the cardiovascular system to the endotracheal tube were noted. The group without the use of muscle relaxants (p < 0.05) experienced earlier extubation and a shorter duration of anesthesia, which in turn contributed to a more rapid activation of the patients. According to the number of post-intubation complications, no significant differences in the two groups were observed. According to the MOPS scale, higher scores (p < 0.05), indicating discomfort in the early postoperative (within the first 15 minutes after the operation) period were observed in the group with the use of muscle relaxants.
Conclusions: Thus, the method of tracheal intubation without the use of muscle relaxants can be used for adenotonsillectomy in children.

Abstract Physiological assessment of drought resistance in spring durum wheat for their ability to grow in solutions of high osmotic pressure was carried out. Germination, morphometric parameters of seedlings and germinal roots were studied. We selected the most informative features to evaluate drought resistance in cultivars with different levels of resistance to the lack of moisture. Keywords: durum wheat, osmotic stress, drought resistance, germination, germ roots, physiological assessment.

Abstract The processes of callusogenesis induction in genotypes of durum spring wheat was investigated. Installed genotypic frequency dependence of morphogenesis. The efficiency of the process and type of callus depend on the explant. It is established that the highest morphogenetic potential of the calli from immature embryos. From the morphogenetic lines derived from Mature embryos, the process of organogenesis does not reach the level of the organism, and ends with the formation of roots (rhizogenesis).

Abstract The analysis of 412 case histories of patients operated for chronic otitis media was made. Tympanosclerosis (TS) was detected in 26(6.3%) patients. 19 patients had bilateral TS, 7 patients--unilateral. TS exacerbations observed up to the age of 13 frequently changed for long-term remission. All the patients had conductive and mixed hypoacusis. A total of 36 standard hearing-improving operations were made.

Abstract Low concentrations (<20 microM) of N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA), an agonist of specific receptors of brain glutamatergic systems, promote the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) both in the whole blood and in lymphocyte fraction. Further increase in NMDA concentrations led to progressive increase in ROS content in the whole blood, but to its decrease in lymphocyte suspension. The activating effect of NMDA is abolished by antioxidant N-acetylcysteine (5 mM) and NMDA-type glutamate receptor antagonist MK-801 (5 microM). Phorbol myristate acetate (PMA, 1 microM) also increased ROS content in the examined structures. This effect was antagonized by N-acetylcysteine, but not MK-801.
