Abstract The book Green, Energy-Efficient and Sustainable Networks provides insights and solutions for a range of problems in the field of obtaining greener, energy-efficient, and sustainable networks. The book contains the outcomes of the Special Issue on "Green, Energy-Efficient and Sustainable Networks" of the Sensors journal. Seventeen high-quality papers published in the Special Issue have been collected and reproduced in this book, demonstrating significant achievements in the field. Among the published papers, one paper is an editorial and one is a review, while the remaining 15 works are research articles. The published papers are self-contained peer-reviewed scientific works that are authored by more than 75 different contributors with both academic and industry backgrounds. The editorial paper gives an introduction to the problem of information and communication technology (ICT) energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, presenting the state of the art and future trends in terms of improving the energy-efficiency of wireless networks and data centers, as the major energy consumers in the ICT sector. In addition, the published articles aim to improve energy efficiency in the fields of software-defined networking, Internet of things, machine learning, authentication, energy harvesting, wireless relay systems, routing metrics, wireless sensor networks, device-to-device communications, heterogeneous wireless networks, and image sensing. The last paper is a review that gives a detailed overview of energy-efficiency improvements and methods for the implementation of fifth-generation networks and beyond. This book can serve as a source of information in industrial, teaching, and/or research and development activities. The book is a valuable source of information, since it presents recent advances in different fields related to greening and improving the energy-efficiency and sustainability of those ICTs particularly addressed in this book

Abstract Purpose: We sought to determine if universal face mask guidelines implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic significantly influenced the incidence of endophthalmitis following intravitreal injections (IVI).
Methods: This retrospective cohort study reviewed the electronic health records from a retina-only practice located in Michigan. The study evaluated patients receiving IVIs over two distinct time periods of April 2019-March 2020, and April 2020-March 2021, which made up our unmasked and masked groups, respectively. We then calculated the incidence of endophthalmitis following IVI and evaluated cases of post-injection endophthalmitis for both time periods.
Results: There were a total of 121,384 intravitreal injections performed over the two year period of interest. Of these, there were 63,114 unmasked and 58,270 masked patient encounters. A total of 46 post-injection endophthalmitis cases were identified. Of these, 29 cases were from the unmasked period and 17 were from the masked period. This resulted in an incidence of endophthalmitis of 0.046% and 0.038% in the masked and unmasked groups, respectively. This difference did not rise to the level of statistical significance (p=0.1336).
Conclusion: This study suggests that the incidence of post-injections endophthalmitis was not influenced by the implementation of ophthalmologist-patient face masking after intravitreal injection during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract The most common classifications for acetabular bone defects are based on radiographic two-dimensional imaging, with low reliability and reproducibility. With the rise of modern processing techniques based on 3D modelling, methodologies for the volumetric quantification of acetabular bone loss are available. Our study aims to describe a new methodology for the quantitative assessment of acetabular defects based on 3D modelling, focused on surface analysis of the integrity of the main anatomical structures of the acetabulum represented by four corresponding sectors (posterior, superior, anterior, and medial). The defect entity is measured as the area increase ratio (AIR) detected in all the sectors analyzed on three planes of view (frontal, sagittal, and axial) compared to healthy hemipelvises. The analysis was performed on 3D models from the CT-scan of six exemplary specimens with a unilateral pathological hemipelvis. The AIR between the native and the pathological hemipelvis was calculated for each sector, for a total of 48 analyses (range, +0.93-+171.35%). An AIR of >50% were found in 22/48 (45.8%) sectors and affected mostly the posterior, medial, and superior sectors (20/22, 90.9%). Qualitative analysis showed consistency between the data and the morphological features of the defects. Further studies with larger samples are needed to validate the methodology and potentially develop a new classification scheme.

Abstract Purpose: To report a case of a patient who suffered a full thickness macular hole (FTMH) due to the accidental utilization of the selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) mode of a dual mode laser.
    Method: Case report.
Results: A 69-year-old woman experienced vision loss in her left eye immediately after undergoing attempted Neodymium:yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Nd:YAG) capsulotomy using a Nd:YAG-SLT laser system. Post-injury visual acuity was 20/25 and 20/800 in the right and left eyes, respectively. Ophthalmic exam and multimodal imaging revealed multiple macular hemorrhages and an irregular FTMH. The patient required multiple surgeries including an autologous retinal transplant to achieve hole closure.
Conclusions: Macular hole formation is a devastating consequence of inadvertent use of the SLT mode when performing a Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy with a Nd:YAG-SLT laser system. We emphasize the importance of ensuring the correct mode is selected for treatment to minimize the risk of retinal damage and permanent vision loss.

Abstract The heterogeneity of use cases that next-generation wireless systems need to support calls for flexible and programmable networks that can autonomously adapt to the application requirements. Specifically, traffic flows that support critical applications (e.g., vehicular control or safety communications) often come with a requirement in terms of guaranteed performance. At the same time, others are more elastic and can adapt to the resources made available by the network (e.g., video streaming). To this end, the Open Radio Access Network (RAN) paradigm is seen as an enabler of dynamic control and adaptation of the protocol stack of 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) networks in the 5th Generation (5G) and beyond. Through its embodiment in the O-RAN alliance specifications, it introduces the Ran Intelligent Controllers (RICs), which enable closed-loop control, leveraging a rich set of RAN Key Performance Measurements (KPMs) to build a representation of the network and enforcing dynamic control through the configuration of 3GPP-defined stack parameters. In this paper, we leverage the Open RAN closed-loop control capabilities to design, implement, and evaluate multiple data-driven and dynamic Service Level Agreement (SLA) enforcement policies, capable of adapting the RAN semi-persistent scheduling patterns to match users requirements. To do so, we implement semi-persistent scheduling capabilities in the OpenAirInterface (OAI) 5G stack, as well as an easily extensible and customizable version of the Open RAN E2 interface that connects the OAI base stations to the near-real-time RIC. We deploy and test our framework on Colosseum, a large-scale hardware-in-the-loop channel emulator. Results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed Open RAN-based solution in managing SLA in near-real-time.

Abstract This paper deals with the challenge of modeling the performance of planned ultrabroadband access networks while maintaining technological neutrality and accuracy in measurable quality. We highlight the importance of such modeling also for addressing public funding policies compared to models mainly based on the maximum nominal speed of the access networks, taking also into account the widespread use of measurement tools like "speed test" that have influenced the perceived quality by end-users. We present a performance modelling approach based on the extension of well-known traffic models that accurately characterizes the performance of broadband access networks. We also show how the presented model has been validated with data from two network operators and has been applied to address the recent Italian public interventions for the development of ultrabroadband access networks in market failure areas.
