Abstract This paper studies the economic and regulatory conditions for the implementation of large-scale projects of production and transport of green hydrogen from North Africa to Europe. The EU has shown a remarkable interest in importing hydrogen from North Africa, to reach climate commitments while compensating for the reduction of gas imports from the Russian Federation. The idea to import green hydrogen from North Africa stems from the potentially low costs of production thanks to the abundance of solar energy and land in desertic areas, and to existing export infrastructure. The paper analyses the cases of Egypt and Algeria and finds that Algeria has a potential cost advantage in transporting green hydrogen to Europe thanks to an overcapacity in its existing gas infrastructure, which could be repurposed. By contrast, Egypt is more competitive in the generation of renewable power, a key input of green hydrogen, thanks to a regulation that attracts investments. Overall, both countries are cost competitive in a similar way, although production of renewable energy is still insufficient to make export infrastructure to Europe viable. Based on their regulatory and political economy differences, the paper suggests ways for the EU to adopt a differentiated approach of cooperation with Egypt and Algeria, which suits their strategic and commercial interests and contributes to boosting their production and transport potential.

Abstract This paper explores how the profitability of European transnational gas infrastructure is affected by (i) alternative ways to organize the gas supply chain; and (ii) different forms of energy diplomacy. In particular, through a case study, the paper analyses how these factors determined the realisation and success of the Greenstream pipeline and the stalemate of the Galsi pipeline, despite the potential for both projects to be profitable. The issue is important in view of the full transition to the EU Single Market, of which unbundling and privatisation are policy pillars. In fact, before the transition, vertical integration in the foreign upstream and energy diplomacy were key elements for infrastructure profitability. The paper argues that these elements are still important, as constraints to gas procurement and binding contractual relations with producers have not changed substantially. Nevertheless, securing those advantages within the EU Single Market framework requires significant innovations. In particular, the paper suggests forms of EU energy diplomacy, based on bilateral trade deals, which could achieve forms of vertical integration for energy firms as well as help EU and non-EU counterparts align their interests. This paper may prove particularly relevant for the recent debate on how to shape EU energy diplomacy.

Abstract The study of the B+ → pp¯ $par p$ K+ decay channel at LHCb offers great opportunities to study different aspects of the Standard Model and possibly Beyond Standard Model physics. In particular it can be interesting not only for the possibility to measure CP asymmetry but also to study possible intermediate resonances. The ratios of the branching fractions of the B+ → pp¯ $par p$ K+ decay channel, of the charmless component with Mpp¯ ${m{M}}_{m{par p}}$ < 2.85 GeV/c2 and of the charmonium contribution ηc relative to the J/ψ are presented.

Abstract Objective: The objectives were to investigate the function of central auditory pathways and of the medial efferent olivocochlear system (MOCS).
Design: Event-related potentials (ERP) were recorded following the delivery of the stimulus /da/ in quiet and in ipsilateral, contralateral, and binaural noise conditions and correlated to the results of the auditory processing disorders (APD) diagnostic test battery. MOCS function was investigated by adding ipsilateral, contralateral, and binaural noise to transient evoked otoacoustic emission recordings. Auditory brainstem responses and pure tone audiogram were also evaluated.
Study sample: Nineteen children (7 to 12 years old) with APD were compared with 24 age-matched controls.
Results: Otoacoustic emissions and ABR characteristics did not differ between groups, whereas ERP latencies were significantly longer and of higher amplitudes in APD children than in controls, in both quiet and noise conditions. The MOCS suppression was higher in APD children.
Conclusions: Findings indicate that children with APD present with neural deficiencies in both challenging and nonchallenging environments with an increase in the timing of several central auditory processes correlated to their behavioural performances. Meanwhile, their modulation of the auditory periphery under noisy conditions differs from control children with higher suppression.

Abstract Sociotropy and autonomy are cognitive-personality styles that have been hypothesized to confer vulnerability to different presentations of major depressive disorder (MDD), which may respond differentially to treatment. Specifically, the profile of low sociotropy and high autonomy is hypothesized to indicate a positive response to antidepressant medication. The current study examines sociotropy and autonomy in relation to sertraline treatment response in individuals with MDD. As part of an ancillary study to the larger Establishing Moderators and Biosignatures of Antidepressant Response for Clinical Care (EMBARC) project, individuals with MDD participated in an 8-week trial of sertraline and completed a self-report questionnaire of sociotropy and autonomy. Discriminant function analyses were used to examine whether sociotropy and autonomy scores could distinguish antidepressant treatment responders (determined by a 50% or greater reduction in depressive symptoms) from non-responders. The sociotropy scale successfully discriminated sertraline treatment responders from non-responders. Further, lower sociotropy was associated with greater improvements in depressive symptomology following sertraline treatment. The current findings suggest individuals with MDD characterized by low sociotropy are more likely to benefit from sertraline. Given the promising results of the Sociotropy-Autonomy Scale in discriminating treatment responders from non-responders, the low resources necessary for administration, and the ease of translation into routine clinical care, the scale warrants further research attention.

Abstract Sleep disturbances are commonly reported in patients with bipolar I disorder (BPI) and are risk factors for mood episodes. In other populations, central nervous system (CNS) hyperarousal is associated with sleep initiation and maintenance problems, and CNS hypoarousal is associated with increased sleep drive. However, it is unclear whether CNS arousal levels are a useful index of sleep disruption in BPI. This study aimed to investigate daytime CNS arousal levels in relation to perceived sleep quality in BPI. Resting EEG, mood state, and self-reported sleep quality data were collected from 34 individuals with BPI. CNS hyperarousal was associated with pervasive poor subjective sleep quality including increased sleep disturbances, increased sleep latency, and reduced global sleep quality. CNS hypoarousal was associated with greater daytime sleepiness, indicating reduced arousal. These preliminary findings suggest that CNS arousal may be a useful index for identifying individuals at high risk for relapse into a mood episode. A limitation of this study is the use of self-report instruments for sleep quality assessment. Future research should investigate the temporal relationship of CNS arousal to sleep disturbances using objective measurements of sleep quality such as polysomnography. If these findings are replicated, measures of CNS arousals may allow for identification of high-risk patients with BPI.

Abstract Spontaneous otoacoustic emissions (SOAEs) are found in most healthy ears, and can be used to measure the health of the cochlear structures and feedback mechanism. According to existing literature, right ears tend to exhibit greater numbers of SOAEs than left ears (Bilger et al., 1990) and females tend to show higher incidence of SOAEs than males (Moulin et al., 1993). The SOAE prevalence has not been extensively studied in children with Auditory Processing Disorder (APD), a disorder with unknown etiology that reduces one's ability to process auditory information. This study examined the prevalence and ear advantage of SOAEs between genders in children diagnosed with APD. SOAEs were investigated in 19 children (7 girls and 12 boys) with APD and 2 4 typically developing children (14 girls and 10 boys) aged 7-12. Right ear advantage was more prevalent in control (71%) than APD subjects (42 %). However, over 30% more females exhibited a right ear advantage than males in each group. Although the results are not significant, our findings indicate that the lack of right ear advantage for SOAE is more prevalent in children with APD, particularly in males, suggesting that cochlear mechanisms or their control might be somehow affected in APD.
