    Abstract Despite marked advancements, life expectancy (LE) growth in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has remained stagnant compared to other developed nations. This study aims to investigate the significant correlation between macroeconomic (ME), sociodemographic (SD), and health status and resources (HSR) factors and LE to formulate an explanatory model for Saudi Arabia and the UAE-a previously unexplored area. Utilizing an ecological, retrospective, time-series study design, we delved into secondary data on SD, ME, and HSR factors and LE of the populations of the UAE and Saudi Arabia spanning three decades (1980-2020). We employed partial least squares-structural equation modeling for statistical analysis. Our analysis revealed significant direct impacts of HSR factors on LE for Saudi Arabia (β = 0.958,

    Abstract Background: The infant mortality rate (IMR) is an important reflection of the well-being of infants and the overall health of the population. This study aims to examine the macroeconomic (ME), sociodemographic (SD), and health status and resources (HSR) effects on IMR, as well as how they may interact with each other.
    Methods: A retrospective time-series study using yearly data for Oman from 1980 to 2022. Partial Least Squares-Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) was utilized to develop the exploratory model of the determinants of IMR.
    Results: The model indicates that HSR determinants directly, but negatively, affect IMR (β = -0.617,
    Conclusions: This study has indicated that IMR is a multi-faceted issue. It also highlighted the interplay of numerous variables and their influence on IMR, particularly the role that social status, the health sector, and the wealth of the country and its population play in reducing IMR. These findings indicate that an integrated policy that addresses socioeconomic and health-related factors and the overall ME environment is necessary for the health and well-being of the children and the population overall in Oman.

    Abstract Background and aim: Women in Oman and low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) are usually diagnosed with BC at a younger age and more advanced stage, with poor five-year survival. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of breast cancer (BC) related educational programs among female Omani adolescents.
    Materials and methods: Six female-only public schools were randomly selected from three governorates of Oman and assigned to the control or interventional group. An Arabic version of the Breast Cancer Awareness Measure questionnaire was used to evaluate students attending grades 10 and 11 at baseline (T0) and after 4 weeks (T1). After T0, the intervention group participated in a one-hour BC education program involving group discussions, a slideshow presentation, leaflets, and online access to program materials and videos. Non-parametric tests were used to compare scores between intervention and control groups and within each group across time (T0 vs. T1).
    Results: A total of 1106 students participated, of which 547 (49.5%) and 559 (50.5%) were allocated to the control and intervention groups, respectively. Recognition of BC risk factors (Z = 18.67;
    Conclusion: The program increased knowledge of BC risk factors and symptoms and promoted early medical help-seeking among Omani female adolescents. Healthcare strategic planners and policy-makers in Oman and low- and middle-income countries should consider incorporating cancer education programs in the national school curriculum to minimize delays in BC diagnosis and improve the survival rate.

    Abstract Cancer is the second leading cause of death worldwide, with attributable mortality expected to continue increasing over time. High school students are often targeted to enhance awareness of cancer risk factors and symptoms and promote early medical help-seeking behaviors. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a cancer education program among Omani adolescents. A total of 12 public schools were randomly selected from three governorates and assigned to either the intervention or control group. Students attending grades 10 and 11 at the selected schools were targeted. The Cancer Awareness Measure tool was used to evaluate knowledge of cancer risk factors and symptoms, perceived barriers to seeking medical help, and anticipated time to consult a doctor for cancer warning symptoms at baseline (T0) and after 4 weeks (T1). After T0, the intervention group participated in a 1-h cancer education program involving a slideshow presentation and group discussion; they also received a leaflet and online access to program materials and videos. A total of 1716 students were enrolled in the study, including 886 (51.6%) assigned to the control group and 830 (48.4%) to the intervention group. Recognition of cancer risk factors (Z = 24.86; p ˂ 0.001) and cancer symptoms (Z = 24.91; p ˂ 0.001) significantly improved in the intervention group between T0 and T1, and compared to the control group at T1 (U = 33.28; p ˂ 0.001, and U = 34.55; p ˂ 0.001, respectively). In addition, anticipated time to help-seeking (Z = 20.15; p ˂ 0.001) and barriers to help-seeking (Z = 10.33; p < 0.001) decreased significantly between T0 and T1, and compared to the control group at T1 (U = 19.00; p ˂ 0.001, and U = 3.58; p < 0.001, respectively). The intervention effectively increased knowledge of cancer risk factors and symptoms and promoted early medical help-seeking behaviors among school-aged Omani adolescents. Integration of cancer education within high school curricula can aid cancer prevention and early intervention efforts. However, additional follow-up is required to confirm the long-term effectiveness of such programs.

    Abstract Introduction: the factors determining life expectancy (LE) are crucial for policymakers to study in implementing an effective and accurate intervention in society. In Oman, the available data over the past four decades were not extracted to develop a statistical model to understand how the sociodemographic (SD), macroeconomic (ME), and health-status and resources (HSR) factors affecting LE. The study was aimed at creating a representative model to explain the factors affecting LE in Oman and examine the direct and indirect effects of SD, ME, and HSR in LE in Oman.
    Methods: the research was a retrospective, ecological, time-series study design to collect the annual published data on SD, ME, and HSR in Oman from all available resources from 1978 to 2018. The data were then analyzed with structural equation modeling (SEM) method using IBM® SPSS® Amos 24 for the study of their impacts in LE.
    Results: in Oman, using SEM, the SD, ME, and HSR significantly and directly affected LE by the estimate of -0.92 (p < 0.001), -0.15 (p < 0.001), and 0.23 (p < 0.001) respectively.
    Conclusion: the study was the first attempt to analyze all the different aspects of LE comprehensively in Oman. In the case of Oman, the health resource is an important factor that need to be addressed to increase or to maintain the current LE. Hence, during social hardship or economic recession, health-related support by the government should be continued or even improved because of its positive effect on LE.

    Abstract This study aimed to examine the impact of health care resources, socioeconomic status, and demographic changes on life expectancy in Indonesia, Philippines, and Vietnam. This was a cross-country study to collect annual data (1980-2008) from each target country. Life expectancy was the dependent variable and health care resources, socioeconomic status, and demographics were the 3 main determinants. Structural equation modeling was employed, and the results indicate that the availability of more health care resources (Indonesia: coefficient = .47, P = .008; Philippines: coefficient = .48, P = .017; Vietnam: coefficient = .48, P = .004) and higher levels of socioeconomic advantages (Indonesia: coefficient = .41, P = .014; Vietnam: coefficient = .34, P = .026) are more likely to increase life expectancy. In contrast, demographic changes are more likely to increase life expectancy because of the wide range of health care resources. These findings suggest that more effort, particularly during economic downturns, should be put into removing the barriers that impede access to health care services and increasing preventive care for the population that currently has less access to health care in communities where there is a shortage of medical resources.

    Abstract Assessment of psychological and emotional disorders is an important indicator of well-being among children and adolescents with cancer. This review aimed to determine the prevalence rates of three major psychological disorders in this population, including anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines were followed. Various databases were searched to identify cross-sectional studies assessing anxiety, depression, and PTSD among children and adolescents with cancer. The Joanna Briggs Institute checklist was used to assess research quality. Of the 40 studies included in the literature review, 33 measured anxiety, 28 focused on depression, and nine assessed PTSD. A total of 18 studies were incorporated into the meta-analysis, with pooled prevalence rates of anxiety, depression and PTSD found to be 13.92% (n  =  1,971; 95% confidence interval [CI]  =  10.23-18.07%), 20.43% (n  =  1,990, 95% CI  =  13.85-27.93%), and 20.90% (n  =  755, 95% CI  =  13.28-29.73%), respectively. Mental health and psychological interventions are essential for children and adolescents diagnosed with cancer. Future work should be undertaken in different regions, such as the Middle East or Africa, or South America when assessing the prevalence of psychological disorders in children and adolescents diagnosed with cancer.

    Abstract This review was aimed at systematically synthesizing and appraising the existing literature of sociodemographic, macroeconomic, and health resources factors on life expectancy. A systematic literature search of English databases, that is, PubMed/MEDLINE were scrutinized for exploring sociodemographic, macroeconomic, and health resources factors on life expectancy. The literature search was conducted in January 2020, covering a total of 46 articles from 2004 to 2019 met the review criteria, which were fully discussed subsequently. Among sociodemographic factors, infant mortality rate, literacy rate, education level, socioeconomic status, population growth, and gender inequality have a significant impact on life expectancy. Gross domestic product, Gini, income level, unemployment rate, and inflation rate are the main macroeconomic factors that significantly correlated with life expectancy. Among various health care resources, health care facilities, the number of the health care profession, public health expenditure, death rates, smoking rate, pollution, and vaccinations had a significant correlation with life expectancy. The systematic review showed general conformity of different studies, with a significant association between life expectancy and factors comprising several sociodemographic, macroeconomic, and various health care variables. This review found that only one study examined factors affecting life expectancy in Arabic countries. More studies on this region to fill this research gap were highly recommended.

    Abstract Executive summary: Background The ability to perform a conscious level assessment forms a vital part of a nurse's skill base. By accurately assessing a patient's conscious level, the nurse is able to detect neurological changes and initiate prompt action. The clinical implications of this are grave and assessment errors are serious and have potentially important clinical consequences.
    Objectives: INCLUSION CRITERIA: This review considered any high quality quantitative papers that addressed factors which impacted nurses' performance of conscious level assessment. This review included data from cohort, case control, cross-sectional, and descriptive studies.The participants of this review were nursing staff working in acute hospitals, specifically working in settings, such as intensive care.Studies which examined knowledge, attitudes and demographic factors and their impact on nurses' performance of conscious level assessment were considered.Search strategy A three-step search strategy was utilised in this review. An initial limited search of MEDLINE and CINAHL was undertaken. A search strategy was then developed using identified keywords and MeSH headings. Lastly, the reference lists of all identified studies were examined. All searches were limited to English Language studies published between 1990 and 2010.Assessment of methodological quality The reviewers used the JBI Critical Appraisal Checklist for Cohort / Case Control Studies and the JBI Critical Appraisal Checklist for Descriptive / Case Series Studies to assess methodological quality.Data extraction Data were extracted using The JBI Data Extraction Form for Comparative Cohort / Case Control studies and the JBI Data Extraction Form for Descriptive/Case Series studies.Data synthesis Due to the heterogeneous nature of the study methods, the findings of this systematic review are presented in a narrative summary.Results Fifty papers were identified through the various database searches and review of reference list and bibliographies, based on their titles and abstracts. Thirteen studies were included in this review. Knowledge and experience were found to be the most significant factors in determining nurses' performance for conscious level assessment. Formal training was found to be effective in improving assessment skills and experience greatly affected the accuracy of conscious level assessment The agreement rates between healthcare staff were moderate to high, however there were still instances of disagreement.Conclusion This review demonstrated that knowledge and experience are the most significant factors to impact nurses' performance of conscious level assessment. There was variability between results of the studies found. This may have been due to differences in the setting, the target population as well as study methodology. However, these findings suggest that the factors impacting a nurses' performance of conscious level assessment may be more complex than what was initially assumed.Implications for practice It is suggested that formal training be on a continual basis to maintain skills in conscious level assessment. Secondly, nurses who are more experienced in the use of the conscious level assessment should mentor those less experienced.Implications for research The effect of training courses has not been studied comprehensively. Further research should be conducted concerning the accuracy and reliability of nurses using other conscious level assessment instruments.
