Abstract The contrast sensitivity function (CSF) is a fundamental visual model explaining our ability to detect small contrast patterns. CSFs found many applications in engineering, where they can be used to optimize a design for perceptual limits. To serve such a purpose, CSFs must explain possibly a complete set of stimulus parameters, such as spatial and temporal frequency, luminance, and others. Although numerous contrast sensitivity measurements can be found in the literature, none fully explains the complete space of stimulus parameters. Therefore, in this work, we first collect and consolidate contrast sensitivity measurements from 18 studies, which explain the sensitivity variation across the parameters of interest. Then, we build an analytical contrast sensitivity model that explains the data from all those studies. The proposed castleCSF model explains the sensitivity as the function of spatial and temporal frequencies, an arbitrary contrast modulation direction in the color space, mean luminance, and chromaticity of the background, eccentricity, and stimulus area. The proposed model uses the same set of parameters to explain the data from 18 studies with an error of 3.59 dB. The consolidated contrast sensitivity data and the code for the model are publicly available at https://github.com/gfxdisp/castleCSF/.

Abstract The vast majority of standard image and video content available online is represented in display-encoded color spaces, in which pixel values are conveniently scaled to a limited range (0-1) and the color distribution is approximately perceptually uniform. In contrast, both camera RAW and high dynamic range (HDR) images are often represented in linear color spaces, in which color values are linearly related to colorimetric quantities of light. While training on commonly available display-encoded images is a well-established practice, there is no consensus on how neural networks should be trained for tasks on RAW and HDR images in linear color spaces. In this work, we test several approaches on three popular image restoration applications: denoising, deblurring, and single-image super-resolution. We examine whether HDR/RAW images need to be display-encoded using popular transfer functions (PQ, PU21, mu-law), or whether it is better to train in linear color spaces, but use loss functions that correct for perceptual non-uniformity. Our results indicate that neural networks train significantly better on HDR and RAW images represented in display-encoded color spaces, which offer better perceptual uniformity than linear spaces. This small change to the training strategy can bring a very substantial gain in performance, up to 10-15 dB.

Abstract The COMPASS experiment at the CERN SPS has studied the diffractive dissociation of negative pions into the π- π- π+ final state using a 190  GeV/c pion beam hitting a lead target. A partial wave analysis has been performed on a sample of 420,000 events taken at values of the squared 4-momentum transfer t' between 0.1 and 1  GeV2/c2. The well-known resonances a1(1260), a2(1320), and π2(1670) are clearly observed. In addition, the data show a significant natural-parity exchange production of a resonance with spin-exotic quantum numbers J(PC)=1-+ at 1.66  GeV/c2 decaying to ρπ. The resonant nature of this wave is evident from the mass-dependent phase differences to the J(PC)=2-+ and 1++ waves. From a mass-dependent fit a resonance mass of (1660±10(-64)(+0))  MeV/c2 and a width of (269±21(-64)(+42))  MeV/c2 are deduced, with an intensity of (1.7±0.2)% of the total intensity.

Abstract First measurements of the Collins and Sivers asymmetries of charged hadrons produced in deep-inelastic scattering of muons on a transversely polarized 6LiD target are presented. The data were taken in 2002 with the COMPASS spectrometer using the muon beam of the CERN SPS at 160 GeV/c. The Collins asymmetry turns out to be compatible with zero, as does the measured Sivers asymmetry within the present statistical errors.
