    Abstract In calanoid copepods, intensive culture is preferred, but currently, densities do not exceed a few adults per milliliter. Several explanations exist, but none have allowed increasing the density of adults. This study proposes a new explanation for the problem of adult density in intensive culture, using the copepod Parvocalanus crassirostris as a model. First: eggs (2 h old) were supplied to adults kept at 20 adults mL⁻¹ in 1 L containers with and without microalgae; constant aeration was supplied to determine egg survival to damage caused by the adults. Different samples were taken up to 175 min. Second: A high-density spawning test (5–80 adults mL⁻¹) was performed, using shallow depth (2.5 cm) and supersaturation level of oxygen for rapid egg separation and sufficient oxygen for adults, respectively. The SEP (egg female⁻¹ day⁻¹) and REP (egg mL⁻¹ day⁻¹) were determined. Third: two systems of continuous egg harvesting, filtration and sedimentation, were evaluated under a high density of adults culture (10 adults mL⁻¹). The adults of P. crassirostris quickly damaged the eggs, but the presence of food reduces the damage caused. Adults presented high SEP up to 10 adults mL⁻¹; however, REP increased significantly to more than 170 eggs mL⁻¹ day-1 using densities of 20 and 30 adults mL⁻¹ (p <.05). A continuous harvesting system by filtration generated deformation of the eggs and a lower SEP and REP compared to the passive harvesting system by sedimentation (p <.01). The present study showed that even P. crassirostris, considered herbivore copepod, can damage its eggs. The fragility of newly spawned eggs (without hardened chorion) can generate difficulties when increasing adult density in culture. This new explanation contributes to the generation of new egg harvesting strategies in calanoid copepods of aquaculture importance.

    Abstract This study evaluated the survival, growth, and larval quality of the spotted rose snapper L. guttatus during a critical developmental period when mass mortalities often occur (at 15 to 24 days post-hatch, DPH), from eating live food to beginning of formulated feed consumption. At first feeding, a large batch of snapper larvae was fed a mixture of the microalgae Tetraselmis and Isochrysis, the rotifer B. plicatilis, and the copepod P. crassirostris. Thereafter (15 DPH), a total of 1800 larvae (5.3 ± 1.3 mm total length) were randomly selected from the large batch and assigned to three dietary treatment groups in 300 L triplicate tanks at a density of 200 larvae tank⁻¹: Group 1 was fed the copepod Cyclopina sp. (CY) only, but they (the copepods) were an assortment of life stages and sizes. Group 2 was fed a mixture of both copepods (CY) and enriched Artemia nauplii (Mx), and Group 3 was fed only enriched Artemia sp. nauplii (AR). Larval quality was evaluated as the tolerance of 24 DPH larvae to a short-term (1.5 min) air exposure stress test. The percent survival of larvae was significantly (p < 0.05) higher when they were fed copepods (73 ± 4%) or the mixed combination of copepods and Artemia nauplii (68 ± 15%) when compared to the larvae fed only Artemia (45 ± 9%). Likewise, the larvae that were fed a diet containing copepods were considered of higher quality than larvae feeding only on Artemia; as the percentages of the larvae that survived the air exposure stress tests were 75 ± 5% and 72.5 ± 7%, respectively of those fed the CY and Mx diets, and significantly (p < 0.05) higher when compared to 55 ± 7% survival of the larvae fed Artemia only. No significant differences (p > 0.05), were observed in lengths measurements of the larvae fed the different diets. The higher survival estimates found in our studies were attributed primarily to the prominent jerky swimming movement of the copepods, and the wide variety of sizes in the copepod culture available for the snapper larvae to prey on, thus increasing capture of the copepods and reducing cannibalism.

    Abstract When copepod Acartia tonsa is isolated from tropical populations, the produced eggs exhibit low hatching after long-term storage, a critical aspect that makes their use difficult in aquaculture. In three experiments, this study spawned adults of A. tonsa cultured at different salinities and temperatures. The eggs were collected to determine hatching success of fresh and cold-stored eggs (HS-C). Experiment 1: Adults spawned under four combinations of two temperatures (18 and 28 °C) and two salinities (18 and 30 PSU) to determine the HS-C from 0 (fresh eggs) to 4 weeks of storage. Experiment 2: Adults spawned under three combinations of temperatures (18, 23, and 29 °C) and 30 PSU to determine the HS-C (from 0 to 4 weeks of storage). Experiment 3: Adults spawned under 18 °C and 30 PSU to determine the HS-C (from 0 to 8 weeks of storage). All adults were distributed in triplicate in 2 L containers at 0.5 individual mL⁻¹ and fed with the Rhodomonas salina microalgae at 2000 μg C L⁻¹. In every experimental unit, the eggs were collected and stored at 3 ± 1 °C. In fresh eggs (0 weeks of storage), most of the treatments showed great hatching (> 90%). However, low salinity and high temperature resulted in a significantly (p < .05) lower hatch (81%) of the fresh eggs. The combination of 18 °C and 30 PSU produced better hatching (p < .05) in eggs stored for 2 and 4 weeks (85% and 73%, respectively), followed by 18 °C and 18 PSU (65% and 41%), 28 °C and 30 PSU (50% and 17%) and 28 °C and 18 PSU (11% and 2%). Stored quiescent eggs were strongly affected by the temperature and salinity of the culture environment. On the other hand, fresh (subitaneous) eggs do not depend so much of these variables. Therefore, the criteria to select what salinity and temperature combination is best to raise adults for egg production will depend on whether the eggs will be used for immediate-use (fresh) or storage.

    Abstract We determined that the average gastrointestinal tract length of 8–11-month-old Gulf of Mexico Sturgeon Acipenser oxyrinchus desotoi , a subspecies of Atlantic Sturgeon A. oxyrinchus , was approximately 82% of its fork length. The time required for digesta to pass through the digestive tract was approximately 32 h. Defecation was initiated between 8 and 16 h after feeding. The main site for digestion and absorption of energy, dry matter, and crude protein was the spiral valve region of the intestine, as determined by apparent digestibility coefficients. By the time digesta had reached the lower spiral valve most of the energy, dry matter, and crude protein had been absorbed. Morphological examination of the intestine, including the spiral valve region, revealed a highly developed mucosal surface area, which is essential for efficient nutrient digestion and absorption during the extended period required for the digesta to move through the digestive tract.
