Abstract Karrikins (KARs) were first identified as a class of small-molecule chemicals derived from smoke that promote seed germination. However, the implied mechanism is still not well understood. Here, we find that KAR signaling mutants have a lower germination percentage than that of wild type under weak light conditions, and KARs promote seed germination through transcriptional activation of gibberellin (GA) biosynthesis via SMAX1. SMAX1 interacts with the DELLA proteins REPRESSOR of ga1-3-LIKE 1 (RGL1) and RGL3. The interaction enhances the transcriptional activity of SMAX1 and inhibits GIBBERELLIN 3-oxidase 2 (GA3ox2) gene expression. The KAR signaling mutant seed germination defect under weak light is partially rescued by exogenous application of GA

Abstract It is interesting and meaningful to explore fluorescent probes for novel rapid detection methods. In this study, we discovered a natural fluorescence probe, bovine serum albumin (BSA), for the assay of ascorbic acid (AA). Due to clusterization-triggered emission (CTE), BSA has the character of clusteroluminescence. AA shows an obvious fluorescence quenching effect on BSA, and the quenching effect increases with increasing concentrations of AA. After optimization, a method for the rapid detection of AA is established by the AA-caused fluorescence quenching effect. The fluorescence quenching effect reaches saturation after 5 min of incubation time and the fluorescence is stable within more than one hour, suggesting a rapid and stable fluorescence response. Moreover, the proposed assay method shows good selectivity and a wide linear range. To further study the mechanisms of AA-caused fluorescence quenching effect, some thermodynamic parameters are calculated. The main intermolecular force between BSA and AA is electrostatic, presumably leading to the inhibiting CTE process of BSA. This method also shows acceptable reliability for the real vegetable sample assay. In summary, this work will not only provide an assay strategy for AA, but also open an avenue for the application expansion of CTE effect of natural biomacromolecules.

Abstract High-yield selective adsorbents and suitable modification methods are both significant for the efficient treatment of U-contaminated wastewater. In this work, a rich-mesoporous aluminum phosphate adsorbent (APO-10) was synthesized by simply increasing the mass of reactants under a fixed solvent volume. After increasing the mass of reactants ten times, APO-10 has the added defect level, the increased specific surface area, and mesoporous structure, and the increased number and enhanced adsorption ability of adsorption active sites (phosphorus-oxygen groups) on the surface, resulting in an enhanced adsorption performance of U(VI) in various environmental conditions. Its ultrahigh adsorption capacity calculated by the Langmuir model can reach 826.44 mg g

Abstract Background: Understanding the national burdens and trends of micronutrient deficiencies can help guide effective intervention strategies. However, there is a lack of evidence of secular trends and age and sex differences in China. This study aims to elucidate trends in common micronutrient deficiencies, in particular, dietary iron, iodine and vitamin A deficiencies in China, from 1990 to 2019 using Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2019 study data.
Methods: Prevalence and DALYs trends of common micronutrient deficiencies from 1990 to 2019 were assessed by joinpoint regression analysis. Age, period and cohort effects on the prevalence of common micronutrient deficiencies were estimated by an age-period-cohort model.
Results: From 1990 to 2019, the age-standardized prevalence rates of iodine, vitamin A and dietary iron deficiencies changed by -0.6% (95% CI: -0.7% to -0.5%), -6.3% (-6.6% to -6.0%), and -3.5% (-3.6% to -3.4%) in males and + 0.8% (+ 0.6% to + 1.0%), -4.5% (-4.8% to -4.2%), and -3.3% (-3.4% to -3.2%) in females, respectively. The average annual percent change (AAPC) in the iodine deficiency prevalence increased in females aged 20 years and older. The relative risk (RR) of iodine deficiency associated with the age effect peaked at 30-34 years of age and then decreased with increasing age. The RR of vitamin A deficiency decreased with age. The age distribution of the RR of iron deficiency differed significantly between sexes. The RRs of vitamin A deficiency and dietary iron deficiency decreased over time, whereas the RR of iodine deficiency substantially increased starting in 2004. The RRs of iodine deficiency and dietary iron deficiency associated with the cohort effect decreased, but the vitamin A deficiency prevalence increased in successive birth cohorts.
Conclusion: Micronutrient deficiency prevalence rates and associated DALYs decreased from 1990 to 2019 in China. Young adults, children aged less than 5 years, and older individuals were disproportionately affected by iodine, vitamin A, and dietary iron deficiencies, respectively. The results of this study may help identify individuals who would benefit from interventions to improve micronutrient deficiency.

Abstract This study aims to explore the effect and mechanism of arginyl-fructosyl-glucose (AFG) on TGF-β1-induced epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) of renal tubular epithelial cells. HK-2 cells were induced by TGF-β1 and then co-cultured with AFG at different concentrations (0, 25, 50, and 100 μmol/l) for 48 h. The morphology of HK-2 cells was observed under an inverted microscope and the expressions of α-SMA, Vimentin, and E-cadherin were assessed by qRT-PCR, Western blot, and immunofluorescence. The mRNA expressions of ERK and STAT3 were also examined by qRT-PCR, and the protein levels of ERK, STAT3, p-ERK, and p-STAT3 were measured by Western blot. Finally, CCK-8 and transwell assays were used to detect cell proliferation and invasion. TGF-β1 treatment significantly induced EMT in HK-2 cells. The expressions of p-ERK and p-STAT3 were signally increased after TGF-β1 induction, while Mogrol treatment inhibited p-ERK, p-STAT3, α-SMA, and Vimentin expression levels, enhanced E-cadherin expression, and suppressed cell proliferation and invasion. AFG exposure could also inhibit p-ERK, p-STAT3, α-SMA, and Vimentin expressions, promote E-cadherin expression, and markedly inhibit HK-2 cell proliferation and invasion. AFG inhibited TGF-β1-induced EMT of renal tubular epithelial cells by regulating phosphorylation of ERK and STAT3.

Its ultrahigh adsorption capacity calculated by the Langmuir model can reach 826.44 mg g⁻¹ at pH = 5.5 and T = 298 K. Its crystal structure did not change after adsorption and remained at 584.40 mg g⁻¹ after 6 cycles. Additionally, APO-10 shows an excellent uranium-selectivity over 68% from a mixed aqueous solution and has excellent applicability in the acidic and alkaline environment based on dynamic adsorption and desorption column experiments. This study not only provides a high-yield efficient selective adsorbent (APO-10) with excellent anti-radiation structure stability for the treatment of radioactive contamination but also provides a feasible modification method by simply increasing the mass of reactants.

Abstract From the Institute of Scientific Information (ISI) Eigenfactor Project 2015 category, 115 journals in six disciplines which are ranked top 20 in order of impact scores in their own disciplines were selected. A total of 1002 industrial cluster research studies collected from the Web of Science between 1998 to 2019 were used as samples. BibExcel software was used for data cleaning and literature co-citation analysis, and co-occurrence matrix was inserted into SPSS software and Pajek software for exploratory factor analysis and network analysis, respectively. The differences and commonalities of the two results obtained from exploratory factor analysis and network analysis were compared by reading literature abstracts and manuscripts to robustly identify the knowledge base. According to the framework of 2W1H, the knowledge module was integrated into a problem-oriented system to understand the internal logic mechanism of the entire study. The top 41 studies in the citation frequency of each period from 1998 to 2005, 2006 to 2012, and 2013 to 2019 were selected to analyze the keyword co-occurrence in different periods, main theoretical basis, contextual focus, evolution of research topics, and important research trends. The results show that: 1) The knowledge base of industrial clusters can be divided into nine modules: external economics and new economic geography, new industrial district theory, competitive advantage theory, evolutionary economic geography, buzz and pipelines, regional innovation system, new economic sociology, absorptive capacity, and global chains; 2) The knowledge structure of these modules can be reflected through the 2W1H research framework, in which the WHAT part is composed of four modules: external economics, new economic geography, new industrial district theory, competitive advantage theory, and evolutionary economic geography. It answers the questions regarding concept, types and development stages of the cluster. The knowledge base of cluster type research in this part is less, which ...

Abstract Introduction: Preeclampsia (PE) is a pregnancy complication that encompasses various pathogenic mechanisms. Shallow implantation of the placenta due to abnormal trophoblast behavior is considered an important mechanism underlying PE; however, its exact etiology remains unclear.
Methods: The expression of OLFML3 in the placenta and important clinical indicators were performed, followed by a correlation analysis. The effect of OLFML3 on the behavior of HTR-8/SVneo cells was examined, and the downstream molecular mechanisms of OLFML3 were investigated in HTR-8/SVneo cells. Additionally, a rat model of PE was generated by adenovirus injection via the tail vein to verify the role of OLFML3.
Results: OLFML3 is highly expressed in both syncytiotrophoblasts and cytotrophoblasts and deregulated in preeclamptic placentas. OLFML3 overexpression in HTR-8/SVneo cells promoted cell proliferation, migration, invasion, and impeded apoptosis, and triggered phosphorylation on ser473 of AKT. Conversely, OLFML3 knockdown exerted opposite effects. Furthermore, OLFML3 overexpression ameliorates CoCl
Discussion: OLFML3 may alleviate PE development by inhibiting extravillous trophoblast cell apoptosis through the PI3K/AKT pathway. Our findings indicated that OLFML3 may provide a possible therapeutic target for PE.
