Abstract Background and purpose: Both dual-energy CT and quantitative susceptibility mapping can evaluate iron depositions in the brain. The purpose of this study was to compare these 2 techniques in evaluating brain iron depositions in Parkinson disease.
Materials and methods: Forty-one patients with Parkinson disease (Parkinson disease group) and 31 age- and sex-matched healthy controls (healthy control group) were included. All participants underwent brain dual-energy CT and quantitative susceptibility mapping. ROIs were set bilaterally in the globus pallidus, substantia nigra, red nucleus, caudate nucleus, and putamen. CT values and magnetic susceptibility values were obtained in each ROI. Differences in CT values and magnetic susceptibility values between the Parkinson disease and healthy control groups were compared, followed by analysis of receiver operating characteristic curves. Correlations between CT values and magnetic susceptibility values were then evaluated.
Results: The CT values of the bilateral globus pallidus, substantia nigra, and red nucleus were higher in the Parkinson disease group (
Conclusions: Both dual-energy CT and quantitative susceptibility mapping could assess excessive brain iron depositions in Parkinson disease, and we found a positive correlation between CT values and magnetic susceptibility values in the bilateral globus pallidus.

Abstract Objective: The neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) is a prognostic marker predicting in-hospital mortality and stent patency in vascular disorders. This study aimed to investigate whether the NLR obtained at admission can be used to predict vascular remodelling outcomes in spontaneous isolated superior mesenteric dissection (SISMAD) patients.
Patients and methods: A total of 109 consecutive SISMAD patients, admitted to a single centre between November 2017 and June 2019, were retrospectively enrolled. Demographics, comorbidities, imaging data, and follow-up results were recorded. NLR at admission was calculated from a routine hemogram. The study endpoint was complete vascular remodelling or follow-up deadline. Patients were divided into two groups: complete vascular remodelling (Group 1) and partial vascular remodelling (Group 2). All parameters, including NLR, were compared between the groups. Multivariate logistic regression analysis determined whether NLR is independent of vascular remodelling in SISMAD patients after conservative treatment.
Results: Complete vascular remodelling of SISMAD occurred in 26 patients (23.9%) and partial remodelling in 83 patients (76.1%). Baseline NLR was significantly higher in the partial remodelling group than in the complete remodelling group [(6.32±2.10) vs. (4.90±2.12), p=0.003]. Complete remodelling was higher in the low NLR group than in the high NLR group [(15, 34.1%) vs. (11, 16.9%), p=0.039]. NLR (odd ratio [OR], 1.631; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.027-2.592; p=0.038) and superior mesenteric artery-distal aorta angle (OR, 9.246; 95% CI, 2.217-38.560; p=0.002) were independent predictors of complete remodelling in multivariate logistic regression analysis. From the receiver operating characteristic curve, the best NLR cut-off value to predict complete vascular remodelling was 5.37, with 72.3% sensitivity and 69.2% specificity.
Conclusions: The inflammation marker NLR may predict worse vascular remodelling in SISMAD patients.

Abstract The purpose of this study was to assess the anatomy of antroliths and its influence on the thickness of the maxillary sinus membrane. Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) was performed on 239 patients (478 sinuses). The prevalence of antroliths per sinus was 8.4%. Regarding their distribution, antroliths were predominantly unilateral (82.5%), single (67.5%), and in a dentate area (60.0%). The antroliths were mainly located in the molar region (95.0%) and in the sinus floor (77.5%). The measured dimensions of the antroliths were as follows: length 5.6±4.4mm, width 4.1±2.9mm, height 3.5±2.1mm. The relationships between the antroliths and the sinus membrane (type 1, 34.1%; type 2, 52.3%; type 3, 13.6%) indicated that sinus membranes tended to encircle antroliths, which resulted in a gradual increase in membrane thickness. The sinus membrane was found to be significantly thicker in the presence of antrolith(s) (P<0.001). Antroliths which are sufficiently large or are located adjacent to the sinus floor or lateral wall increase the risk of sinus membrane perforation during sinus augmentation procedures. Therefore, a thorough CBCT evaluation is needed to minimize the risk of complications prior to sinus augmentation procedures.

Abstract Aim: To evaluate inter-reader agreement between novice and expert radiologists in assessing contrast-enhanced ultrasonography (CEUS) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) images for detecting viable tumours with different sizes after conventional transarterial chemoembolisation (cTACE).
Materials and methods: This prospective study included patients who had less than five hepatomas and who underwent cTACE. Hepatomas with one or two feeding arteries were selected as target lesions. CEUS and MRI were performed within 1 week after cTACE to evaluate viable tumours.
Results: The expert group had higher kappa values in evaluating all tumour sizes via CEUS compared with MRI. The novice group had similar kappa values. In patients with tumours measuring ≤3 cm, the expert group had higher kappa values in reading CEUS compared with MRI images; however, in the novice group, the kappa value was lower in evaluating CEUS compared with MRI images. In patients with tumours measuring >3 cm, the expert and novice groups had good to excellent kappa values. The confidence level of the two groups in reading MRI images was high; however, the novice group had a lower confidence level.
Conclusion: CEUS is a convenient, cost-effective, and easy to apply imaging tool that can help interventionists perform early detection of viable hepatocellular carcinoma post-TACE. It has a higher inter-rater agreement in interpreting CEUS images compared with MRI images among expert radiologists even when they are extremely familiar with post-cTACE MRI images. In novice radiologists, there may be a learning curve to achieve good consistency in CEUS interpretation.
