    Abstract The relationship between working memory (WM) and language processing has been extensively investigated in cognitive research. Previous studies mostly obtain evidence from measuring the involvement of WM in complex syntactic structures reported with well-established processing asymmetry, e.g., relative clauses (RCs) in English. Rarely considered is the role of WM in language whose RC processing asymmetry presents conflicting results, e.g., Chinese. This study addresses the research gap. Three experiments with a self-paced listening paradigm interfered with concurrent digit-load and lexical-decision interference were conducted on subject-extracted RCs (SRC) and object-extracted RCs (ORC). Listening times show no disparity between SRCs and ORCs, nor is either SRC or ORC processing more affected by syntactic complexity at comparable positions under each condition. Nevertheless, the post-sentence comprehension shows greater impairment in SRCs than ORCs. The results that memory load interfering does not differentially impair the availability of WM resources used for Chinese RC processing provide evidence for the specialization role of working memory. The findings demonstrate a dynamic, fluctuating wave pattern for Chinese RC processing. We argue that there is no RC processing asymmetry in Chinese.

    Abstract In the target article, David Rose makes an interesting and substantive case against a certain kind of sceptical view: "veridical perception is impossible in principle," combined with a certain version of anti-realism. He proceeds by first illustrating several ideas from George Orwell's seminal work, and then proposes that a certain kind of non-reductive, levelled emergentist metaphysics can help us respond to such scepticism. In this commentary, I join forces with Rose's case, but will point out that we need to take seriously two discussions in contemporary philosophy in order to make the realist case stronger: the argument from illusion and hallucination, and the causal exclusion argument. Only then do Rose and his allies can have a more satisfactory case for objectivity and realism.

    Abstract A single fluorescent molecule is highly likely to be located at the center pixel position of a raw image diffused spot in an ideal situation. Even if the molecule and the center pixel position do not completely overlap, they are very close. A single-molecule localization method based on denoising, interpolation and local maxima (DIL) is proposed. The low-resolution raw image is denoised and interpolated, and a new image with a pixel size equal to that of the super-resolution image is attained. The local maxima of the new image are extracted. With this method, it is found that the local maxima positions can be regarded as the fluorescent molecule positions. Simulation results demonstrate that the DIL single-molecule localization accuracy reaches ∼18 nm when the Gaussian noise variance is equal to 0.01. Experimental results demonstrate that the DIL localization methodology is comparable to the Gaussian fitting algorithm and is faster.

    Abstract Purpose: Despite advancements in laparoscopic ventral hernia repair (LVHR) using the intraperitoneal onlay mesh technique (sIPOM), recurrence remains a common postoperative complication. The objective of this systematic review and meta-analysis is to compare the efficacy of defect closure (IPOM-plus) versus non-closure in ventral and incisional hernia repair. The aim is to determine which technique yields better outcomes in terms of reducing recurrence and complication rates.
    Methods: A comprehensive literature review was conducted in the PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, Embase, and ClinicalTrials.gov databases from their inception until October 1, 2022, to identify all online English publications that compared the outcomes of laparoscopic ventral hernia repair with and without fascia closure.
    Results: Three randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and eleven cohort studies involving 1585 patients met the inclusion criteria. The IPOM-plus technique was found to reduce the recurrence of hernias (OR = 0.51, 95% CI [0.35, 0.76], p < 0.01), seroma (OR = 0.48, 95% CI [0.32, 0.71], p < 0.01), and mesh bulging (OR = 0.08, 95% CI [0.01, 0.42], p < 0.01). Subgroup analysis revealed that body mass index (BMI) (OR = 0.43, 95% CI [0.29, 0.65], p < 0.0001), type of article (OR = 0.51, 95% CI [0.35, 0.76], p = 0.0008 < 0.01), geographical location (OR = 0.54, 95% CI [0.36, 0.82], p = 0.004 < 0.01), follow-up time (OR = 0.50, 95% CI [0.34, 0.73], p = 0.0004 < 0.01) had a significant influence on the postoperative recurrence of the IPOM-plus technique.
    Conclusion: The IPOM-plus technique has been shown to greatly reduce the occurrence of recurrence, seroma, and mesh bulging. Overall, the IPOM-plus technique is considered a safe and effective procedure. However, additional randomized controlled studies with extended follow-up periods are necessary to further evaluate the IPOM-plus technique.

    Abstract Background: Many studies have explored the value of the systemic inflammation response index (SIRI) in predicting the prognosis of patients with breast cancer (BC); however, their findings remain controversial. Consequently, we performed the present meta-analysis to accurately identify the role of SIRI in predicting BC prognosis.
    Methods: PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science databases were comprehensively searched between their inception and February 10, 2024. The significance of SIRI in predicting overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) in BC patients was analyzed by calculating pooled hazard ratios (HRs) and corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs).
    Results: Eight articles involving 2,997 patients with BC were enrolled in the present study. According to our combined analysis, a higher SIRI was markedly associated with dismal OS (HR = 2.43, 95%CI = 1.42-4.15,
    Conclusion: According to our results, a high SIRI significantly predicted poor OS in patients with BC. Furthermore, elevated SIRI was also remarkably related to increased tumor size and later BC tumor stage. The SIRI can serve as a novel prognostic biomarker for patients with BC.
