    Abstract Photoperiod has well been established to regulate testicular activities in golden hamsters. These animals breed actively around summer but become infertile in winter. In males, testicles are full of multistep germ cells including spermatozoa in summer. But in winter only fundamental cells consisting of the testicles are detected. The testicular degeneration is accompanied by the reduced levels of blood gonadotropins and testosterone. In this study, the expressions of gonadotropin subunit genes were investigated in the reproductive active and inactive testicles. And parts of sequences of the gonadotropin subunits were identified and compared with those of other rodents. As results, common gonadotropin alpha (CGa), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) β, and luteinizing hormone (LH) β genes were equivalently detected in pituitaries of both sexually active and inactive animals. In considering low concentrations of gonadotropin hormones determined in pituitary, the present findings imply that the processes involved in translation and/or formation of functional hormones could be impeded in the sexually inactive hamsters. All the nucleotide sequences of gonadotropin subunits identified in this study were same as those reported previously except for one base in CGa. An unsure amino acid deduced from the CGa sequence was confirmed from mRNA sequencing. The outcomes mentioned above suggest that animals with regressed testes prepare for the sexually active period forthcoming in the future.

    Abstract With the explosive development of optoelectronic devices, the need for high-performance transparent conductive (TCE) electrodes for optoelectronic devices has been increasing accordingly. The two major TCE requirements are (1) visible light average transmittance higher than 80% and (2) sheet resistance lower than 10 Ω/sq. In this study, we investigated the critical role of the top and bottom ZnO thicknesses for the ZnO/Cu/ZnO electrodes prepared on glass substrates. It was shown that the required Cu thickness to meet the conductivity requirement is 8 nm, which was fixed and then the thicknesses of the top and ZnO layers were independently varied to experimentally determine the optimized conditions for optical transparency. The thicknesses of the top and bottom ZnO layers were both found to significantly affect the peak transmittance as well as the average visible light transmittance. The ZnO/Cu/ZnO electrode exhibits peak and average transmittance of 95.4% and 87.4%, excluding the transmittance of glass substrates, along with a sheet resistance of 9.7 Ω/sq, with a corresponding Haacke's figure of merit (φH=Tave10Rs) of 0.064, which exceeds the reported value for the ZnO/Cu/ZnO electrodes, manifesting the need of experimental optimization in this study.

    Abstract Immune checkpoint molecules function to inhibit and regulate immune response pathways to prevent hyperactive immune activity from damaging healthy tissues. In cancer patients, targeting these key molecules may serve as a valuable therapeutic mechanism to bolster immune function and restore the body's natural defenses against tumors. CD200, an immune checkpoint molecule, is a surface glycoprotein that is widely but not ubiquitously expressed throughout the body. By interacting with its inhibitory receptor CD200R, CD200 suppresses immune cell activity within the tumor microenvironment, creating conditions that foster tumor growth. Targeting the CD200/CD200R pathway, either through the use of monoclonal antibodies or peptide inhibitors, has shown to be effective in boosting anti-tumor immune activity. This review will explore CD200 and the protein's expression and role within the tumor microenvironment, blood endothelial cells, and lymph nodes. This paper will also discuss the advantages and challenges of current strategies used to target CD200 and briefly summarize relevant preclinical/clinical studies investigating the immunotherapeutic efficacy of CD200/CD200R blockade.

    Abstract Aim: To analyse the clinicoradiological characteristics of traumatic inferior vena cava (IVC) injury level on preoperative computed tomography (CT).
    Materials and methods: This retrospective study evaluated patients from a single trauma centre treated for traumatic IVC injury between January 2014 and January 2021. Data on demographics, mechanism of injury, Injury Severity Score, radiological findings on CT and angiography, IVC injury level in surgical findings, complications, and clinical outcomes were collected.
    Results: During the 8-year study period, 36 patients presented with traumatic IVC injury: 19 underwent preoperative CT with 17 (89%) blunt and two (11%) penetrating injuries. The most common primary CT sign was contour abnormality (53%, n=10), followed by intraluminal flap and active extravasation (21%, n=4). Among the secondary signs, hepatic laceration (53%, n=10) and retroperitoneal haemorrhage (53%, n=10) were the most common. Frequencies of primary and secondary signs were higher in the infrarenal and suprarenal than in the retrohepatic vena cava injuries. Diagnostic capability of preoperative CT for IVC injury differed according to the IVC level. The detection rate was the highest for an infrarenal vena cava injury at 100% (n=4), followed by that for a suprarenal, suprahepatic, and retrohepatic vena cava injuries at 75% (n=3), 43% (n=3), and 25% (n=1), respectively.
    Conclusion: CT findings of traumatic IVC injuries may vary depending on the mechanism and anatomical site of injury. Familiarity with IVC injury imaging features may help in diagnosis and surgical treatment planning.

    Abstract Melatonin is a pineal hormone that is synthesized and released at night under the light and dark cycles of a day. Its effects on the reproductive activities have well been established by the administration through various routes in photoperiodic animals. It was also identified in plants and named phytomelatonin. The capacity of the phytomelatonin was investigated in this investigation whether it affects the reproductive function in male golden hamster. As expected, animals housed in long photoperiod (long photoperiod, LP>12.5 hours of lights in a day) had large testes and animals kept in short photoperiod (SP≦12.5 hours of lights in a day) showed remarkably reduced testes. The dietary supplement with melatonin itself induced the complete involution of testes. Pistachios that were reported to contain a large amount of melatonin demonstrated no effects at all in male golden hamsters. These results suggest that dietary supplement containing melatonin-rich foodstuff used in this investigation may not be enough to affect the reproductive endocrine system in male golden hamsters.
