Abstract Ketone bodies are considered as an alternative energy source for diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM) and can improve the energy supply of the heart muscle, suggesting that it may be an important area of research and development as a therapeutic target for DCM. Cumulative cardiovascular trials have shown that sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors reduce cardiovascular events in diabetic populations. Whether SGLT2 inhibitors improve DCM by enhancing ketone body metabolism remains and whether they help prevent oxidative damage remains to be clarified. Here, we present the combined results of nine GSE datasets for diabetic cardiomyopathy (GSE215979, GSE161931, GSE145294, GSE161052, GSE173384, GSE123975, GSE161827, GSE210612, and GSE5606). We found significant up-regulated gene 3-hydroxymethylglutaryl CoA synthetase 2 (HMGCS2) and down-regulated gene 3-hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase (BDH1) and 3-oxoacid CoA-transferase1 (OXCT1), respectively. Based on the analysis of the constructed protein interaction network, it was found that HMGCS2 was in the core position of the interaction network. In addition, Gene ontology (GO) enrichment analysis mainly focused on redox process, acyl-CoA metabolic process, catalytic activity, redox enzyme activity and mitochondria. The activity of HMGCS2 in DCM heart was increased, while the expression of ketolysis enzymes BDH1 and OXCT1 was inhibited. In vivo, Empagliflozin (Emp) treated DCM group significantly decreased ventricular weight, myocardial cell cross-sectional area, and myocardial fibrosis. In addition, Emp further promoted the activity of BDH1 and OXCT1, increased the utilization of ketone bodies, further promoted the activity of HMGCS2 in DCM, and increased the synthesis of ketone bodies, prevented mitochondrial breakage and dysfunction, increased myocardial ATP to provide sufficient energy, inhibited oxidative stress and apoptosis of cardiac cells ex vivo, and improved the myocardial dysfunction of DCM. Emp can improve mitochondrial dysfunction in diabetic cardiomyopathy ...

Abstract In recent years, the critical need for better performance, higher safety, and longer cycle life in lithium-ion batteries has become so tangible and ubiquitous that an increasing amount of effort has been focused on the search for new materials. However, in contrast to the search for advanced and efficient materials, electrode engineering is a practical way to enhance battery performance. Here, we show that the electrochemical performance of the NMC811 electrode containing functionalized powder (Carbon Black KS6) can be remarkably enhanced by fabricating cathodes with an out-of-plane aligned architecture. The aligned architecture results in faster charge transport kinetics and a specific charge up to two times higher than that of non-architectured electrodes at a rate of 5C.

Abstract Serpins constitute a family of proteins with a very wide distribution in nature. Serpins have a well-conserved tertiary structure enabling irreversible protease inhibition or other specific biochemical functions. We examined the 189 putative wheat serpin genes previously identified by Benbow et al. (2019) via analysis of gene annotations (RefSeq v1.0) and combined our previous examinations of wheat ESTs and the 454 genome assembly. We found that 81 of the 189 putative serpin genes, plus two manually annotated genes, encode full-length, structurally conserved serpins. Expression of these serpin genes during wheat development and disease/abiotic stress responses was analysed using a publicly available RNAseq database. Results showed that the wheat LR serpins, homologous to Arabidopsis AtSerpin1 and barley BSZx, are ubiquitously expressed across all tissues throughout the wheat lifecycle, whereas the expression of other wheat serpin genes is tissue-specific, including expression only in the grain, only in the root, and only in the anther and microspore. Nine serpin genes were upregulated in both biotic and abiotic responses. Two genes in particular were highly expressed during disease and abiotic challenges. Our findings provide valuable information for further functional study of the wheat serpins, which in turn may lead to their application as molecular markers in wheat breeding.

Abstract Plant factories are perceived as a sustainable agricultural production system, since they provide a cultivation environment for growing agricultural crops with less resource consumption and no pesticide use. However, as the industry and academic participants have been contributing in the development of plant factory technology, consumer acceptance for the crops cultivated from that technology remains unknown. Without consumer acceptance, all the costs spent in the research and development (RD) of plant factories cannot gain the profit. To address this deficiency, this study was aimed to: (1) investigate consumers’ attitudes, concerns and willingness to pay for the vegetables cultivated with plant factories, (2) explore the branding mode that is most effective for selling plant factory vegetables to consumers, and (3) determine the influence of consumers’ socio-demographics and vegetable purchase behavior for their willingness to pay for plant factory vegetables. With a modified strategy of multi-stage cluster sampling, a consumer survey was conducted and 390 valid questionnaires were obtained for statistical analysis. Data were analyzed with descriptive statistical analysis, analysis of variance, Duncan’s post hoc analysis, and regression analysis to meet the study objectives. The study results indicated that over half of the subjects appreciated the value of plant factory technology. However, as high as 64.4% of the subjects revealed concerns. Most of the concerns were about the issues of environmental pollution and food safety. It also showed that price played a decisive role for consumers’ purchase intentions to plant factory vegetables. Moreover, consumers were more willing to pay a higher price for the plant factory vegetables labeled with an allied brand of academic institutes and private corporations, compared with those labeled with other types of brand. Consumers who had higher income and/or consume more organic vegetables were also more willing to pay for the plant factory vegetables. The study ...

Abstract Over the span of three decades, the development of rural tourism has substantially improved rural economies and the lives of rural residents; however, it has also negatively affected societies, cultures, and environments, which is not conducive to sustainable development. Motivated by the aim of meeting the Sustainable Development Goals, the balanced development of economic, social, cultural, and environmental factors in rural tourism can only be achieved by analyzing the current problems of rural tourism on the basis of an overall system. Therefore, this study developed an overall evaluation system for analyzing the sustainable development of rural tourism. This system contains an indicator framework for sustainable development of rural tourism and an analytical mechanism for an improvement strategy constructed using a modified DANP-mV model. In this study, the evaluation system was applied to the empirical case study of Yudong Village in China. The empirical case study results show that social sustainable development ( D 2 ) is not the first priority for improvement, although it exhibits the largest gap. Instead, environmental sustainable development ( D 4 ), which exhibits a smaller gap, should receive higher priority for improvement because it is the root cause of social sustainable development ( D 2 ). The overall improvement strategy for Yudong Village should follow this path: environmental sustainable development ( D 4 ) → social sustainable development ( D 2 ) → economic sustainable development ( D 1 ) → cultural sustainable development ( D 3 ). In addition to demonstrating the effectiveness of the rural tourism sustainable development evaluation system, the empirical case study also demonstrated that the system is capable of identifying the root causes of rural-tourism-related sustainability problems and contributing to the formulation of improvement strategies.

Abstract Abstract Robust state estimation for delayed genetic regulatory networks with reaction–diffusion terms and uncertainties terms under Dirichlet boundary conditions is addressed in this article. The main purpose of the problem investigation is to design a novel state observer for estimate the true concentrations of mRNA and protein by available measurement outputs. Based on Lyapunov–Krasovskii functions and linear matrix inequalities (LMI), sufficient conditions are given to ensure the robust stability of the estimation error networks. Two examples are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Abstract We propose in this article a quantum square ring that conveniently generates, annihilates and distills the Aharonov Casher phase with the aid of entanglement. The non-Abelian phase is carried by a pair of spin-entangled particles traversing the square ring. At maximal entanglement, dynamic phases are eliminated from the ring and geometric phases are generated in discrete values. By contrast, at partial to no entanglement, both geometric and dynamic phases take on discrete or locally continuous values depending only on the wavelength and the ring size. We have shown that entanglement in a non-Abelian system could greatly simplify future experimental efforts revolving around the studies of geometric phases.

Abstract It is difficult to adapt the traditional section margin distribution method to the power system with a high proportion of renewable energy generation (REG). This paper proposes a section margin allocation method of REG clusters considering the randomness of source and load power. Firstly, the probability density function of the predicted REG power error is estimated, the probability that REG stations meet the output command after the section margin distribution is calculated, and the output realization probability of each REG station is discussed. The typical operation mode set of the REG cluster is then obtained by clustering the REG stations according to the operation history, and the load rise space of the REG cluster under each typical operation mode is calculated. Considering the randomness of REG power and its load power, the section margin is allocated to each REG station in the REG cluster so as to ensure that each REG station reaches the highest output probability. On the premise of ensuring the safe and stable operation of the grid, this method facilitates the management of REG clusters and the accommodation capacity of the power system for REG. Simulations of the power system of IEEE 39 nodes verify the rationality and validity of the section margin allocation method.
