Abstract Statement of problem: With the aging population, an increasing number of patients will require removable dental prostheses. Despite the recent public efforts to improve oral healthcare, knowledge of hygiene procedures for removable dental prostheses is sparse.
Purpose: The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to determine, through questionnaires, the level of awareness and education of home hygiene procedures among elderly Italian individuals wearing removable dental prostheses and to correlate self-reported hygiene habits and prosthesis cleanliness, as determined by a clinical examination.
Material and methods: A cross-sectional study was performed by questionnaires administered by a dental hygienist to patients attending the dental clinics (prosthodontic and periodontology clinical units) at San Paolo Hospital of Milan from January 2014 to October 2015 and who volunteered to participate. The questionnaire included demographic data and oral hygiene habits. Each participant received an intraoral and prosthesis examination performed by the same dental hygienist. The cleanliness of the removable dental prosthesis was classified according to a 3-point scoring system. Categorical variables were expressed as a percentage of study participants and compared by using the χ
Results: Questionnaires were collected from 161 study participants: 92 women (mean ±standard deviation age: 76 ±7.59 years; range: 65-93 years) and 69 men (mean ±standard deviation age: 74 ±6.31 years; range: 65-86 years). A total of 239 prostheses were considered. A significant correlation was found between older participants, older removable dental prostheses, and reduced prosthesis cleanliness, correlating age ranges of participants as well as of removable dental prostheses with the degrees of prosthesis cleanliness (P=.001 and P=.004, respectively). Half the study participants (n=81; 50.3%) reported prosthesis removal during the night, while the others reported sleeping with the prosthesis in place. Some study participants (n=32; 19.9%) reported that they had never received instructions about how to clean the prosthesis. Mechanical brushing with toothbrush and toothpaste was the most common cleaning method (n=47; 29.2%), while the recommended combined cleaning method based on both mechanical brushing and immersion in dental cleanser was applied by 34 (21.1%) study participants. A similar number (n=25; 15.5%) reported at least 1 episode of denture-related stomatitis.
Conclusions: In the analyzed cohort, patient attitude and habits toward home procedures for denture hygiene resulted in poor prosthesis cleanliness. Most individuals used a toothbrush and toothpaste to clean their device, although combining mechanical and chemical cleaning is typically reported to be the optimal method.

Abstract The impact of COVID-19 on socio-economical activities has changed everyday life. Dental hygienists, who perform aerosol generating procedures, have been strongly affected by changes in routine procedures. This cross-sectional study aimed at carrying out an online survey among dental hygienists in Lombardy. The survey was implemented after the first-wave lockdown focusing on the level of knowledge on COVID-19 and Sars-CoV-2, the virus-related changes in their attitude and working routine, and the socio-economic effects. In this report, we included 313 questionnaires of respondents (259 Females, and 54 Males; age = 33 ± 9 years). A significant percentage of respondents acknowledged the use of "word of mouth" among colleagues (n = 114, 36%) and social networks (n = 113, 36%) to be up to date on COVID-19. About half of respondents correctly identified the main COVID-19 symptoms/signs, just 13% (n = 41) identified the routes of transmission. Three quarters of respondents (n = 234, 75%) were afraid of being infected during the clinical practice, and about half of them would be afraid to treat patients having symptoms attributable to COVID-19. Twenty-one percent (n = 67) of participants also thought about changing job. Air-polishing was identified as the highest risk procedure, and 82% (n = 256) reported that they eliminated its use. Most claimed they never had a swab or a serological test, with two respondents positive to molecular test (0.6%), and 12 positives to serological test (3.8%). More than half of the participants (65%; n = 202) complained the dental hygienist is not protected, despite a loss of earnings due to lockdown between 2,000 and 10,000 euros. This study demonstrated that dental hygienists were emotionally and economically affected by the pandemic, significantly changing their work routine. Anti-epidemic protocols are pivotal to react promptly and to contain the virus in the dental setting.

Abstract Periodontitis is an inflammatory condition causing a severe infection in the gum, leading to tooth loss and related serious health hazards. Severe periodontitis is the sixth most prevalent medical condition, globally affecting about 743 million individuals. Resveratrol (3,5,4′-trihydroxystilbene) is a plant polyphenol, extensively popularized during the last decades owing to its promising beneficial effects on human health. A plethora of studies have been carried out and reviewed, retrieved from popular search engines to elucidate the complex bioactivity and the possible health benefits of resveratrol on periodontitis via numerous in vitro and in vivo studies. The underlying mode of action by which resveratrol exerts its health-promoting effects is still to be fully understood and, so far, they are ascribed to a multi-target action. Bioavailability, pharmacodynamics, pharmacokinetics, drug-drug interactions and possible toxicological considerations of resveratrol are also addressed. Resveratrol is indicated as a safe and an effective natural compound against periodontitis and can thus be an interesting alternative to treat this oral disease. Its antimicrobial activity is related to strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. More in-depth comprehensive studies are needed on human samples to elucidate the structure-activity relationship with bioactivity, for its successful implementation as a useful mainstream drug against periodontitis.
