Abstract Affective states are psycho-physiological constructs connecting mental and physiological processes. They can be represented in terms of arousal and valence according to the Russel's model and can be extracted from physiological changes in human body. However, a well-established optimal feature set and a classification method effective in terms of accuracy and estimation time are not present in the literature. This paper aims at defining a reliable and efficient approach for real-time affective state estimation. To obtain this, the optimal physiological feature set and the most effective machine learning algorithm, to cope with binary as well as multi-class classification problems, were identified. ReliefF feature selection algorithm was implemented to define a reduced optimal feature set. Supervised learning algorithms, such as K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN), cubic and gaussian Support Vector Machine, and Linear Discriminant Analysis, were implemented to compare their effectiveness in affective state estimation. The developed approach was tested on physiological signals acquired on 20 healthy volunteers during the administration of images, belonging to the International Affective Picture System, conceived for inducing different affective states. ReliefF algorithm reduced the number of physiological features from 23 to 13. The performances of machine learning algorithms were compared and the experimental results showed that both accuracy and estimation time benefited from the optimal feature set use. Furthermore, the KNN algorithm resulted to be the most suitable for affective state estimation. The results of the assessment of arousal and valence states on 20 participants indicate that KNN classifier, adopted with the 13 identified optimal features, is the most effective approach for real-time affective state estimation.

Abstract The Companion Modeling approach aims to stimulate learning and sharing of perceptions among several actors through the co-construction and use of a model, while the Integrated Assessment of Agricultural Systems aims to assess a large set of performances of current and alternative systems. Our research question was: to what extent does the joint use of these two methods foster sustainability thinking? We show how the co-design of evolving agriculture scenarios and the use of Integrated Assessment of Agricultural Systems methods guided the implementation of a Companion Modeling process applied to the Valensole Plateau, southeastern France. An initial phase, based on a preliminary diagnosis, aimed to collectively formulate the issues to be addressed, and to engage the actors in a collective dynamic. The second phase consisted of leading actors in the co-construction of a simulation model to represent the agricultural system to be evaluated using economic, social, and environmental indicators at different scales. In the final phase, the current situation and the co-designed scenario were collectively analyzed. The scenario was conceived as a “worst case”, embedded with drivers such as input costs and climate change. Opposing adaptation strategies were envisioned by farmers and other actors. Results show how debates between participants adaptively shaped the model. Scenario simulations highlighted better environmental performance at the expense of economic performance. The differences between farms led to discussions on technical management. Overall, the process stimulated collective reflection among the actors and created a learning experience with the sharing of perceptions and knowledge about the agricultural system. The model was considered relevant by the participants, who expressed interest in continuing its exploration. Our approach, which used a unique combination of Integrated Assessment of Agricultural Systems and scenario development with Companion Modeling, could be adapted to other areas and issues, although tool transfer remains an open question.

Abstract This paper aims to shed light on the ideas and interests supporting the institutionalization of family agriculture in Argentina. It became a socio-political and productive category in support of a renewed national strategy of Argentina. We analyze the processes of that legitimation in the political, social and economic domains and we present the transformation of public policies regarding rural development. The change from palliative policies to supporting policies aiming to identify as a productive sector and professionalize family agriculture demonstrates the change in policy reference for rural development and shows new social representations of the agriculture in Argentina and more generally in South America. Now the family agriculture identifies itself by the multifunctional aspect of its activity. That leads to a fragmentation of the agricultural economic sector in two policy reference frameworks, one based on the family agriculture and its roles in the national development, one based on the entrepreneurial agriculture for export.

Abstract In the framework of the project “Observatories of Territorial Dynamics” (LABINTEX) we participate in 4 devices of participatory research on different territorial situations in order to test the ability of these devices to create socio-technical networks with agency capability. Two of these devices (Capvert and ObsTAE) are linked to situations of farmers groups involved in processes of agroecological transition. In both cases the different group situations are characterized and monitoring of selected groups is made. In this paper we propose to characterize these devices and show some progress in the performed follow-ups. Two main hypotheses guide this presentation: 1) membership to a group facilitates the process of agroecological transition 2) There is a correlation between moving forward to agro-ecological practices and the emergence of new forms of cooperation between producers and actors of the territory. The first field works encourage us to validate both hypotheses.
