Abstract The aim of this study is to investigate the effectiveness, not yet described in the literature, of the gold standard system for motion analysis, to analyse the kinematic and dynamic aspects of the split leap in rhythmic gymnastics performed with and without the ribbon. The sample consists of six top level gymnasts aged between 13 and 16 (mean 15.1 ± 0.94). The acquisitions were carried out with the integrated multifactorial optoelectronic system BTS Bioengineering. Fifteen passive markers, six BTS Smart-DX cameras, two cameras for video support and seven BTS-6000 force platforms were used. After the acquisition of the gymnasts' anthropometric measurements, a standardized and specific neuromuscular activation was carried out. The software SMART tracker and SMART analyser were used to process and analyse the dynamics and kinematics data. A questionnaire was administered to the gymnasts to collect information regarding training. The results showed no major differences in force impulse, jump amplitude, elevation and flight time between the trials performed with and without ribbon. The experiment conducted demonstrates the effectiveness of using the integrated multifactor optoelectronic system to carry out the kinematic and dynamic analysis of a highly complex sports technique.

Abstract The study of premature deaths from causes that are generally preventable given the current availability of healthcare – called amenable deaths due to healthcare – provides information on the quality of services. However, they are not only impacted by healthcare characteristics: other factors are also likely to influence. Therefore, identifying the association between amenable deaths due to healthcare and health determinants, such as education, might be the key to preventing these deaths in the future. Still unclear however, is how this works and how amenable deaths due to healthcare are distributed and evolve within the European Union (EU) below the national level. We therefore studied the geographical and temporal patterns of amenable deaths due to healthcare in the 259 EU regions from 1999 to 2016, including the 2007–2008 financial crisis and the post-2008 economic downturn, and identified whether any association with education exists.A cross-sectional ecological study was carried out. Using a hierarchical Bayesian model, we estimated the average smoothed Standardized Mortality Ratios (sSMR). A regression model was also applied to measure the relative risks (RR) at 95% credible intervals for cause-specific mortality association with education. Results show that amenable deaths due to healthcare decreased globally. Nevertheless, the decrease is not the same across all regions, and inequalities within countries do persist, with lower mortality ratios seen in regions from Central European countries and higher mortality ratios in regions from Eastern European countries. Also, the evolution trend reveals that after the financial crisis, the number of these deaths increased in regions across almost all EU countries. Moreover, educational disparities in mortality emerged, and a statistical association was found between amenable deaths due to healthcare and early exit from education and training. These results confirm that identifying and understanding the background of regional differences may lead to a better ...

Abstract COVID-19 hit the world in a sudden and uneven way. Scientific community has provided strong evidence about socioeconomic characteristics of the territory associated with the geographical pattern of COVID-19 incidence. Still, the role played by these factors differs between study areas. Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR) models were applied to explore the spatially varying association between age-standardized COVID-19 incidence rate in 2020 and socioeconomic conditions in Portugal, at the municipality level. The spatial context was defined as a function of the number of neighbours; the bandwidth was determined through AIC. Prior, the validity of the GWR was assessed through ordinary least squares models. Border proximity, proportion of overcrowded living quarters, persons employed in manufacturing establishments and persons employed in construction establishments were found to be significant predictors. It was possible to observe that municipalities are affected differently by the same factor, and that this varying influence has identifiable geographical patterns, the role of each analysed factor varies importantly across the country. This study provides useful insights for policymakers for targeted interventions and for proper identification of risk factors.

Abstract Faunal remains associated with human burials are a well-known practice in Southern Portugal during the Middle Bronze Age (end of the third millennium until the first half of the second millennium BC). The funerary architecture is mainly marked by hypogea, where articulated segments of anterior limbs or isolated bones from the front limbs of cattle or sheep/goat are present as grave goods. Along with hypogea, there are also examples of burial contexts in pits with faunal remains associated. This paper presents data on a circular pit from Montinhos 6 (Southern Portugal) with two primary interments, where disarticulated sheep/goat and hare remains are included as grave goods. Some of the bones (both hare and sheep/goat) were included as dry bones, meaning that animal corpses were manipulated earlier. It allows considering the hypothesis that such animal remains have been used in a previous social context. The animal corpses decay, and some bones were chosen, collected, and lastly integrated within the funerary context. This treatment of the bones suggests a well-planned integration of the animals into the funerary rituals. Regarding the meaning of these faunal remains, one may interpret them as “manipulated artefacts” or amulets, invoking graces for hunting and/or herding practices. In addition, sheep/goat front limb bones (humerii and radii) were added as well, probably with fresh tissues attached, suggesting rituals of funerary commensality.

Abstract Understanding how the occurrence and abundance of invasive species vary over time and the environmental factors that cause such variation is important for managing and controlling invasive species. To date, studies with this perspective remain scarce in the Neotropics. We used a database describing 12 years of the occurrence of an invasive rotifer (Kellicottia bostoniensis) in a large neotropical wetland (230 km²) (upper Paraná River) since 2000. We investigated how multiple local abiotic and biotic environmental variables jointly affect occurrence and abundance of an invasive zooplankton species (K. bostoniensis). The abundance and occurrence of K. bostoniensis varied significantly over time, with a marked increase after 2009. Furthermore, biotic (native zooplankton abundance, chlorophyll-a) and abiotic (turbidity, and water level) variables were important drivers of K. bostoniensis. Whereas native zooplankton and turbidity were negatively associated with the occurrence and abundance of K. bostoniensis, chlorophyll-a and water level were positively related. Furthermore, as biotic and abiotic variables naturally fluctuate to extremes, the occurrence and abundance of K. bostoniensis were reduced. Collectively, our findings underline the important role of local variables, particularly, native zooplankton and turbidity to control the abundance and occurrence of K. bostoniensis. Our results also suggest that maintaining natural extreme oscillations of the local variables can be effective in the management of invasive species.

Abstract There is considerable evidence pointing to the existence of a socioeconomic gradient in mortality, which tends to be steeper in urban areas. Similar to other European cities, Lisbon is far from homogeneous since considerable geographical inequalities exist between the more advantaged and the more deprived neighborhoods. The main goals of this study are to describe the geographical pattern of premature deaths (before 65 years old), avoidable deaths (preventable and amenable to healthcare) and cause-specific mortality (HIV/AIDS and suicide) in Lisbon, at the lower administrative level (civil parish, in Portuguese: Freguesia), and analyze the statistical association between mortality risk and deprivation, before (1999–2003) and during the economic crisis (2008–2012). Smoothed Standardized Mortality Ratios (sSMR) and Relative Risk (RR) with 95% credible intervals were calculated to identify the association between mortality and deprivation. The analysis of the geographical distribution of cause-specific mortality reveals that civil parishes with high sSMR in the first period continued to present higher mortality rates in the second. Moreover, a significant statistical association was found between all the causes of death and deprivation, except suicide. These findings contribute to understanding how social conditions influence health outcomes and can offer insights about potential policy directions for local government.

Abstract Geographical accessibility to health care services is widely accepted as relevant to improve population health. However, measuring it is very complex, mainly when applied at administrative levels that go beyond the small-area level. This is the case in Portugal, where the municipality is the administrative level that is most appropriate for implementing policies to improve the access to those services. The aim of this paper is to assess whether inequalities in terms of access to a hospital in Portugal have improved over the last 20 years. A population-weighted driving time was applied using the census tract population, the roads network, the reference hospitals’ catchment area and the municipality boundaries. The results show that municipalities are 25 min away from the hospital—3 min less than in 1991—and that there is an association with premature mortality, elderly population and population density. However, disparities between municipalities are still huge. Municipalities with higher rates of older populations, isolated communities or those located closer to the border with Spain face harder challenges and require greater attention from local administration. Since municipalities now have responsibilities for health, it is important they implement interventions at the local level to tackle disparities impacting access to healthcare.
