Abstract Affective science is stuck in a version of the nature-versus-nurture debate, with theorists arguing whether emotions are evolved adaptations or psychological constructions. We do not see these as mutually exclusive options. Many adaptive behaviors that humans have evolved to be good at, such as walking, emerge during development - not according to a genetically dictated program, but through interactions between the affordances of the body, brain, and environment. We suggest emotions are the same. As developing humans acquire increasingly complex goals and learn optimal strategies for pursuing those goals, they are inevitably pulled to particular brain-body-behavior states that maximize outcomes and self-reinforce via positive feedback loops. We call these recurring, self-organized states

Abstract Introduction: Laboratory diagnosis of measles can be challenging, and the reintroduction of the measles virus in Brazil has brought about new issues. The aim of this study was to analyze the qPCR results of swab and urine samples and compare them with those of immunological methods for the diagnosis of measles.
Methods: This was a cross-sectional study based on a retrospective analysis of 3,451 suspected cases using laboratory test surveillance databases for qPCR (respiratory swabs and urine) and serologic tests for IgM and paired IgG. Sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, accuracy, and agreement through kappa and adjusted kappa coefficients (PABAK) were calculated using different diagnostic strategies.
Results: The swab and urine samples obtained using real-time qPCR were equivalent. Samples collected simultaneously and the combined samples showed moderate agreement between IgM ELISA and real-time qPCR; however, 48.9 % of the IgM ELISA analyses did not demonstrate detectable qPCR concentrations during simultaneous collections and 43.9 % of combined collections. The paired analysis of IgG showed an accuracy of 67.5 % for IgM and 90.7 % for real-time qPCR.
Conclusions: Diagnosis based on IgM presents detection delimitation in samples collected early (1-5 days), suggesting that these individuals satisfy at least two criteria. In addition to qPCR, paired analysis of IgG using ELISA can be used to increase the sensitivity and specificity of laboratory diagnoses.

Abstract RNA therapeutics (RNATx) aim to treat diseases, including cancer, by targeting or employing RNA molecules for therapeutic purposes. Amongst the most promising targets are long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs), which regulate oncogenic molecular networks in a cell type-restricted manner. lncRNAs are distinct from protein-coding genes in important ways that increase their therapeutic potential yet also present hurdles to conventional clinical development. Advances in genome editing, oligonucleotide chemistry, multi-omics and RNA engineering are paving the way for efficient and cost-effective lncRNA-focused drug discovery pipelines. In this Review, we present the emerging field of lncRNA therapeutics for oncology, with emphasis on the unique strengths and challenges of lncRNAs within the broader RNATx framework. We outline the necessary steps for lncRNA therapeutics to deliver effective, durable, tolerable and personalized treatments for cancer.

Abstract There have been four feature films made under the title King Solomon’s Mines, each of them crediting H. Rider Haggard’s Victorian adventure novel published in 1885 as their source. Several films, under different titles, have also claimed either this novel or its sequel Allan Quatermain, as their source material. While close adherence to an original text should not be the criterion for the merits, or otherwise, of a film, it is worth noting that only the first film version of King Solomon’s Mines shot in South Africa in 1918, retained the inter-racial romance found in Haggard’s novel. Later versions substituted an invented white female character as the romantic interest for either the book’s hero, Allan Quatermain, or his fellow adventurer, Sir Henry Curtis. This includes the most recent version released in 2004 starring Patrick Swayze and Alison Doody. That Haggard’s novel (and the first film of his book made thirty-three years later) featured a love story between a white man and a black woman would perhaps seem counterintuitive given the perceived racial mores of the time. Equally, such a love story should seem less problematic given the passage of time. That this is not the case, even in the first decade of the 21st century, this novel presents us with an intriguing example of modernity in reverse. This paper explores the strange trajectory of cinema’s iterations of Haggard’s King Solomon’s Mines.

Abstract The intellectual tradition of individualism treats the individual person as the fundamental unit of analysis and reduces all things social to the motives and actions of individuals. Most methods in clinical psychology are influenced by individualism and therefore treat the individual as the primary object of therapy/training, even when recognizing the importance of nurturing social relationships for individual wellbeing. Multilevel selection theory offers an alternative to individualism in which individuals become part of something larger than themselves that qualifies as an organism in its own right. Seeing individuals as parts of social organisms provides a new perspective with numerous implications for improving wellbeing at all scales, from individuals to the planet.
