    Abstract Abstract China’s rising capability in science, technology and innovation to a certain extent has to do with “a grand experiment” that started 15 years ago when the Chinese government released the National Medium and Long-Term Plan for the Development of Science and Technology (2006–2020) (MLP). MLP launched the indigenous innovation strategy and set goals to turn China into an innovation-oriented country. The junction when the old MLP phased out and a new MLP (2021–2035) will soon be introduced holds greater historical and practical significance for the Chinese and international scientific communities to make sense of planning for science. This paper reviews the progress achieved in implementing the MLP, analyzes the daunting challenges facing China to become an innovation-oriented nation, discusses the implications of planning science for the Chinese and international scientific communities, and speculates on what might be included in the new MLP.

    Abstract A series of fault depression structures have developed around the Ordos Block. The Langshan Mountain-Linhe Basin area (LLA), located on the northwest edge of the Ordos Block, is a typical, normal tension fault system. A geological survey shows that the Langshan Piedmont fault (LPF) in this area has a large slip rate and indicates risk of earthquake preparation. Broadband magnetotelluric (MT) exploration research was recently carried out across the LLA in the NW–SE direction, and the three-dimensional deep electrical structure thus obtained revealed that the LPF in the LLA is an evident electrical boundary zone on the whole crustal scale and is the main boundary fault of the primary structural block of the Alxa and Ordos Blocks. The MT results also show that the Linhe Basin and Ordos Block belong to the same tectonic basement. The Linhe and Dengkou faults belong to the internal faults of the Ordos Block. The upper crust of the Langshan Mountain on the west side of LPF is characterized by high-resistivity, the middle and lower crust have a low-resistivity layer, and the Linhe Basin on the east side has a Cenozoic low-resistivity sedimentary layer of approximately 10 km thick, which reveals that the Linhe Basin is a faulted basin with sedimentary thickness around the Ordos Block. This indicates that the LLA has experienced continuous and strong tension, normal fault depression sedimentary activities since the Cenozoic era. The current Global Positioning System velocity field shows that there is an apparent NW–SE acceleration zone in the LLA. The leveling data indicate that Linhe Basin shows a subsidence trend relative to the Ordos Block, indicating that the area is undergoing continuous NW–SE tension and faulting. It is speculated that there is a risk of earthquake preparation in the LPF.

    Abstract Since its introduction, live e-commerce has shown rapid growth, especially in regions such as China, where the total market size has exceeded trillions of RMB. However, e-commerce live streaming has also caused widespread consumer impulse-buying behaviour during the development process. Therefore, based on stimulus–organism–response theory, from the perspective of human–computer interaction, this paper develops an impulse-purchase model for live e-commerce consumers, uses partial least squares structural equation modelling to process and analyse 339 valid questionnaires and, finally, validates the proposed hypotheses. The findings show that consumers’ visual appeal, perceived arousal and engagement play a mediating role in the relations among interface design, live atmosphere and impulse purchase. To promote the sustainability of a live-streaming economy, live-streaming platforms need to design attractive live-streaming interfaces, build a pleasant live-streaming atmosphere and enhance consumers’ positive emotions, while preventing their irrational purchasing behaviour. An in-depth analysis of the formation mechanism of this behaviour can help in alleviating the limitations of the lack of rich research results and a single perspective in this field. In addition, it can help stakeholders promote the sustainability of e-commerce live streaming in practice.

    Abstract With the recent development of internet healthcare, many hospitals have laid out their online platforms. However, there have been some poor service levels and low quality. The frequency of such problems has led to a decline in patient satisfaction. Therefore, it is vital to explore how hospitals can improve user satisfaction and willingness to visit them offline by setting up an online presence. Most studies conducted so far have remained limited to the single dimension of online or offline healthcare, with few studies exploring the relationship between them. While a few studies have explored the impact of online service quality on willingness to seek offline care, they also face the problem of a single perspective of analysis. Therefore, this study constructs a multidimensional model of the factors influencing online healthcare users’ willingness to seek offline care by integrating the value-based adoption model and the stimulus–organism–response model. Through a partial least squares-structural equation modelling analysis of 283 valid samples, this study found that online doctor–patient interactions and service quality positively impact user perception. This paper explores the development path of online healthcare from a new theoretical perspective. In addition, the findings provide new guidelines for hospitals to achieve economic and social benefits.

    Abstract A simple and feasible scheme for the generation and manipulation of phonon lasering is proposed and investigated based on a generic three-mode cavity magnomechanical system, in which a magnon mode couples simultaneously with a microwave cavity mode and a phonon mode. In sharp contrast to all previous phonon lasering schemes with only a single drive, the input pump field for the system in the proposed scheme is split into two microwave driving fields to drive the microwave cavity mode and the magnon mode, respectively. The impact of changing relative phase and relative amplitude ratio of the two microwave drives on mechanical gain, stimulated emitted phonon number, threshold power, and phonon emission line shape are theoretically and numerically investigated. The results indicate that the phonon laser action can be effectively controlled simply by adjusting the relative phase and relative amplitude ratio, so additional and tunable degrees of freedom are introduced to control the phonon laser. Considering the experimental feasibility of the generic cavity magnomechanical system and the two-drive approach, the present scheme provides a potentially practical route for the development of tunable phonon lasering devices with low-threshold, high-gain, and narrow-linewidth properties based on the platform of cavity magnomechanics.

    Abstract Abstract The COVID-19 pandemic has caused staggering human and economic costs. We outline four key lessons learned from efforts to address the pandemic in China and the US. First, effective surveillance, reporting, and contact tracing are needed to contain an epidemic at its emergence and to mitigate its impact at a later stage. Second, multi-sectoral efforts to offer incentives for those with no or minor symptoms to seek care and to quarantine themselves are critical, which would need concerted efforts from payers, providers, and public health. Third, sustained and routine prevention efforts involving both the public and the health systems will prove to be useful in times of a pandemic. Fourth, a strong public health system is essential and will be appreciated at times of urgency. Concerted multi-sectoral efforts are required to address COVID-19 pandemic with strong leadership from the public health sector.

    Abstract With the development of biotechnology, luminescent nanoprobes for biological disease detection are widely used. However, the further application in clinic is limited by the reduced penetration depth in the tissues and light scattering. In this work, we have synthesized NaYF 4 :Yb,Er,Ce@SiO 2 -OAlg nanomaterials, which have both upconversion and near-infrared (NIR) luminescence. The optimized probes were determined to achieve cell imaging by its upconversion (UCL) luminescence and in vivo imaging through collection of NIR fluorescence signals simultaneously. The research is conducive to developing accurate diagnostic techniques based on UCL and NIR fluorescence imaging by a single nanoparticle.

    Abstract With the massive expansion in live streaming, enhancing the sustained engagement of users has become a key issue in ensuring its success. This study examines the relationship between real-time interaction, user perceptions, user intention to keep using live streaming, and whether this relationship differs between a live and a virtual live streaming environment. Using partial least squares (PLS) structural equation modelling (SEM), this paper analyses 240 valid questionnaire responses and finds that there is a link between real-time interactions, visual stimuli, and users’ sustained engagement. This shows that users’ active interactions while watching live streaming videos significantly affect their perceptions of social presence and trust, which in turn, affect their sustained engagement behaviour. These effects were found to vary with differences in the live streaming environment. The findings of this paper will play a positive role in understanding the differences between various live streaming environments, in optimizing the design of live streaming content and in improving the perceptions of emotional warmth by live streaming users.

    Abstract Lockdowns and border closures due to COVID-19 imposed mental, social, and financial hardships in many societies. Living with the virus and resuming normal life are increasingly being advocated due to decreasing virus severity and widespread vaccine coverage. However, current trends indicate a continued absence of effective contingency plans to stop the next more virulent variant of the pandemic. The COVID-19–related mask waste crisis has also caused serious environmental problems and virus spreads. It is timely and important to consider how to precisely implement surveillance for the dynamic clearance of COVID-19 and how to efficiently manage discarded masks to minimize disease transmission and environmental hazards. In this viewpoint, we sought to address this issue by proposing an appropriate strategy for intelligent surveillance of infected cases and centralized management of mask waste. Such an intelligent strategy against COVID-19, consisting of wearable mask sample collectors (masklect) and voiceprints and based on the STRONG (Spatiotemporal Reporting Over Network and GPS) strategy, could enable the resumption of social activities and economic recovery and ensure a safe public health environment sustainably.

    Abstract Land use change (LUC) is a dynamic process that significantly affects the environment, and various approaches have been proposed to analyze and model LUC for sustainable land use management and decision making. Recurrent neural network (RNN) models are part of deep learning (DL) approaches, which have the capability to capture spatial and temporal features from time-series data and sequential data. The main objective of this study was to examine variants of the RNN models by applying and comparing them when forecasting LUC in short time periods. Historical land use data for the City of Surrey, British Columbia, Canada were used to implement the several variants of the RNN models. The land use (LU) data for years 1996, 2001, 2006, and 2011 were used to train the DL models to enable the short-term forecast for the year 2016. For the 2011 to 2016 period, only 4.5% of the land use in the study area had changed. The results indicate that an overall accuracy of 86.9% was achieved, while actual changes in each LU type were forecasted with a relatively lower accuracy. However, only 25% of changed raster cells correctly forecasted the land use change. This research study demonstrates that RNN models provide a suite of valuable tools for short-term LUC forecast that can inform and complement the traditional long-term planning process; however, further additional geospatial data layers and considerations of driving factors of LUC need to be incorporated for model improvements.
