Abstract This article considers a stage in the clinical trial process seldom documented in social sciences: recruitment of healthy volunteers for an HIV preventive vaccine trial through a media campaign. It analyzes one of the consequences of participating in such a clinical trial: the development of vaccine-induced seropositivity (VISP) and how this biomedical notion is mobilized both in recruitment procedures' normative discourses and from the volunteers' points of view, and its consequences on their decision to participate. The interpretations of VISP by volunteers depend on several factors: socialization, itinerary into the recruitment procedure, sexuality, etc., and generates diverse feelings such as indifference, doubt, or even fear. Fear of VISP represents the principal refusal reason for those who interrupted their participating step, just before inclusion stage. Addressing VISP phenomenon is important because it represents a major challenge for the information and the communication procedures for the next anti-HIV prophylactic trials recruitment campaigns.

Titelübersetzung Moving from patient information to involvement in associations for people living with HIV participating in a medical study in Senegal - ANRS cohort 1215.
Abstract Based on work in anthropology and the experience of the implementation of a project on ethics, this article describes the contributions of the ANRS 1215 cohort to information of participants and community involvement in research. It draws a parallel between the development of information methods and the roles gradually held by PLWA individually or collectively. From 1998 to 2011, the PLWA have diversified theirs activities (psycho-social support, administrative tasks, ethical watch function) and have contributed to improve the information of participants. This involvement of PLWHIV in ethics, which belongs to a long-term process, is analyzed through social, political, economical and ethical evolutions, both at national and international level.

Abstract Septic arthritis (SA) and gout are the main suspected etiologies of acute monoarthritis. Differentiating them is essential because SA is an emergency. The performance of a gout diagnostic score developed by Janssens et al. was investigated in a cohort of patients with acute arthritis suspected of being septic. This was an ancillary study of a single-center cohort of patients with suspected SA. Patients were classified into three groups according to the final diagnosis (gout, SA or other diagnosis). We assessed the performance of the score (sensitivity [Se], specificity [Sp], positive and negative predictive value [PPV, NPV], area under the receiver operating characteristic [ROC] curve) for the diagnosis of gouty arthritis. In total, 138 patients were included: 28 (20.3%) had gout, 42 (30.4%) SA, and 68 (49.3%) another diagnosis. The median diagnostic score was 7.0 [4.5; 8.8] for patients with gout, 3.5 [2.5; 6.0] for those with SA and 3.0 [2.0-5.0] for those with another diagnosis. With a score threshold of ≥ 8, the Se for a diagnosis of gout was 28.6%, Sp 96.4%, PPV 66.7%, and NPV 84.1%. With a threshold of ≤ 4, the Se was 82.1%, Sp 64.5%, PPV 37.1%, and NPV 93.4%. The area under the ROC for the diagnostic score was 0.79. The performance of the clinico-biological score of Janssens et al. for a diagnosis of gout applied to a cohort of patients with acute arthritis and suspected of being septic was poor. Joint aspiration remains necessary to differentiate SA from another etiology.

Abstract Background: Developing high yielding varieties is a major challenge for breeders tackling the challenges of climate change in agriculture. The panicle (inflorescence) architecture of rice is one of the key components of yield potential and displays high inter- and intra-specific variability. The genus Oryza features two different crop species: Asian rice (Oryza sativa L.) and the African rice (O. glaberrima Steud.). One of the main morphological differences between the two independently domesticated species is the structure (or complexity) of the panicle, with O. sativa displaying a highly branched panicle, which in turn produces a larger number of grains than that of O. glaberrima. The gene regulatory network that governs intra- and interspecific panicle diversity is still under-studied.
Results: To identify genetic factors linked to panicle architecture diversity in the two species, we used a set of 60 Chromosome Segment Substitution Lines (CSSLs) issued from third generation backcross (BC
Conclusion: Our analysis led to the detection of genomic variations between O. sativa cv. Caiapó and O. glaberrima cv. MG12 in regions associated with enhanced panicle traits in specific CSSLs. These regions contain a number of key genes that regulate panicle development in O. sativa and their interspecific genomic variations may explain the phenotypic effects observed.

Abstract It is clear that there is an increased cardiovascular (CV) risk in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) as a result of systemic inflammation. Hand osteoarthritis (HOA) patients, also have an increased CV risk, but the causes are still debated. Our objective was to compare CV risk factors and risk scores between HOA and RA patients. Thirty-five HOA patients were matched by age (< 3 years) and sex to 35 RA patients in a case-control study. We compared their CV risk profiles and their risk of occurrence of CV events at 10 years using the risk equations SCORE1, SCORE2, and QRISK3. There was a significant increase in SCORE1, SCORE2, but not in QRISK3 in the RA group compared to the HOA group, provided that the multiplication coefficient for RA was applied. This increase was found to no longer be significant for SCORE1 when RA patients have low disease activity (DAS28 ≤ 3.2; n = 8). There was no difference between groups in the frequency of metabolic syndrome, blood pressure, abdominal circumference, body mass index, uricemia, triglyceridemia, HDL cholesterolemia, or pain intensity. Conversely, HOA patients had higher LDL cholesterol and fasting blood glucose levels, in the main analysis and in the subgroup of moderate/high RA activity patients (DAS28 > 3.2; n = 26). We found a higher CV risk in RA compared to HOA patients with moderate/high disease activity. The increased CV risk reported in OA remains to be confirmed in HOA, but these patients appear to have a pro-atherogenic lipid and glycemic profile.

Abstract Though facing significant challenges, coffee (Coffea arabica) grown in Haitian agroforestry systems are important contributors to rural livelihoods and provide several ecosystem services. However, little is known about their genetic diversity and the variety mixtures used. In light of this, there is a need to characterize Haitian coffee diversity to help inform revitalization of this sector. We sampled 28 diverse farms in historically important coffee growing regions of northern and southern Haiti. We performed KASP-genotyping of SNP markers and HiPlex multiplex amplicon sequencing for haplotype calling on our samples, as well as several Ethiopian and commercial accessions from international collections. This allowed us to assign Haitian samples to varietal groups. Our analyses revealed considerable genetic diversity in Haitian farms, higher in fact than many farmers realized. Notably, genetic structure analyses revealed the presence of clusters related to Typica, Bourbon, and Catimor groups, another group that was not represented in our reference accession panel, and several admixed individuals. Across the study areas, we found both mixed-variety farms and monovarietal farms with the historical and traditional Typica variety. This study is, to our knowledge, the first to genetically characterize Haitian C. arabica variety mixtures, and report the limited cultivation of C. canephora (Robusta coffee) in the study area. Our results show that some coffee farms are repositories of historical, widely-abandoned varieties while others are generators of new diversity through genetic mixing.

Abstract Introduction: Higher cardiovascular risk found in rheumatoid arthritis or psoriatic arthritis is largely due to systemic inflammation. In osteoarthritis (OA), occurrence of systemic inflammation has already been sometimes reported, but the possible association between OA and increased cardiovascular risk remains unclear. In this meta-analysis, we aimed to assess the incidences of myocardial infarction (MI) and stroke, and the cardiovascular risk factors in OA patients.
Methods: We searched PubMed, EMBase, and the Cochrane Library to find references of interest up to June 2018. MI and stroke incidence were calculated using meta-proportion analysis. Differences in cardiovascular risk factors between OA patients and controls were expressed as standardized mean differences using the inverse of variance method.
Results: The reviewed studies reported 227 MIs in 3550 OA patients (incidence, 7.5%; 95% CI: 3.0-13.8%) and 616 MIs among 12,444 control subjects (incidence, 6.0%; 95% CI: 2.8-10.3%). Meta-analysis of the three longitudinal studies revealed a significantly increased MI risk among OA patients (RR=1.22; 95% CI: 1.02-1.45). We also found a significantly increased stroke risk in OA patients (RR=1.43; 95% CI: 1.38-1.48). Concerning cardiovascular risk factors, OA patients exhibited a pro-atherogenic lipid and glycemic profile including high levels of fasting glucose, total cholesterol, and LDL cholesterol and a high body mass index. Concerning atherosclerosis markers, OA patients exhibited a higher risk of metabolic syndrome, and increased pulse wave velocity.
Conclusion: Our meta-analysis results revealed higher cardiovascular risk in OA patients. This highlights the importance of cardiovascular risk factor management in OA.
