Abstract There are countless causes that lead a baby to be born premature: placental changes (placenta previa and premature detachment), excess amniotic fluid, maternal age (mothers under 18 years of age), maternal infections, primacy, use of alcohol and drugs. The premature baby's trajectory begins with hospitalization, usually for long periods in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), due to pulmonary immaturity and the need for prolonged ventilatory support. Gastric probing by oral or nasal route is an essential procedure in assisting nutrition for newborns up to thirty-four weeks of gestational age, as it does not have fully developed sucking and swallowing reflexes. The literature describes several oral changes present in premature and low birth weight children, highlighting an increase in the incidence of enamel defects, such as hypoplasia and hypomineralization, an increase in the incidence of dental caries, developmental and eruption delay of the primary dentition, dental and palate malformation. The aim was to report the clinical case of a premature infant with chronic use of an orogastric tube (OT) with lesion in the middle region of the upper lip and gum pad. After 24 hours of repositioning the OT, can be observed the lesion regression. Thus, the presence of the dentist in the NICUs, assisting with protocol and diagnostic measures, can minimize deleterious effects on the oral cavity. It should be noted that the training and applicability of dental protocols in NICUs improves safety in the care of the newborn.

Abstract Actinic cheilitis (AC) is a oral disorder potentially malignant with dysplastic proliferations of keratinocytes. The lesion has a predilection for the red zone of the lower lip and may be closely related to excessive exposure to sunlight. The aim of this study was to report a clinical case of AC in a cardiac patient, admitted to the intensive care unit. Male patient, leucoderma, 82 years old, with a whitish lesion on the red zone of the lower lip, pedicled and sessile areas, well-marked limits and irregular shape. The incisional biopsy was performed in the intensive care unit bed and sent to the laboratory of pathological analysis in the State of Paraíba (LACEN). Microscopy showed an epidermis thickened by acanthosis, with cells showing nuclear pleomophism and hyperchromism. In the dermis, the presence of vascular ectasia, diffuse lymphocytic infiltrate and basophilic degeneration of elastic fibers, areas with foci of superficial erosion of the lining epithelium covered by a crust of necrotic and fibrinoleucocytic material were also observed. The anatomopathological diagnosis was ulcerated actinic cheilitis. The treatment performed was total surgical excision with monitoring of the healing process until the patient's hospital discharge. It was concluded that the treatment proposed to the patient was decisive. Also the presence of the dentist in a hospital environment facilitated the access and treatment of a oral disorder potentially malignant, favoring the prognosis of the case.

Abstract With the evolution of bacterial resistance over conventional antimicrobials and the development of new antimicrobials, the search for new compounds of natural origin has intensified, since plants with therapeutic potential constitute a source of new biologically active compounds, encouraging the development of new therapeutic options. The objective of this study was to evaluate the antibacterial and anti-adherent activity of the ethanolic extract of Praxelis clematidea (Griseb.) R.M. King & Robinson (Asteraceae) on strains of Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Enterococcus faecalis. Tests were carried out to determine the MIC and MBC by means of broth microdilution in 96-well plates, and to determine the MICA, a technique with inclined tubes in the presence of 5% sucrose was used. It was observed that the ethanolic extract of P. clematidea has strong bactericidal activity on K. pneumoniae, and moderate bactericidal activity on S. pneumoniae and E. faecalis. Being able to inhibit adherence to K. pneumoniae strains. Thus, the ethanolic extract of P. clematidea proves to be effective as an antimicrobial in the control and prevention of infections by S. pneumoniae, K. pneumoniae and E. faecalis. It also has an effective anti-adherent effect on K. pneumoniae strains.
