Abstract The use of biodigesters and the circular economy (CE) has been gaining attention in recent years. Both biodigesters and CE have the potential to minimize negative impacts—not only environmental, but also economic and social. However, little attention has been paid to the relationship between biodigesters and CE. Therefore, the objective of this paper is to identify and analyze the implications of the use of biodigesters in the light of a CE concept. To do this, a SWOT matrix was developed based on the opinion of experts and two case studies were conducted in companies operating in different sectors in Brazil. The results showed that the use of biodigesters can drive CE through biogas, which is a renewable energy source, closing the cycle of organic materials, increasing the economic power of companies and small producers, improving basic sanitation in remote areas, and stimulating industrial symbiosis. However, this study identified barriers in the use of biodigesters in the context of CE, such as lack of government incentives and composting being shown to be more cost-effective than the use of biodigesters for the treatment of solid waste.

Abstract Although the topic of integration in product development is widely debated in the literature, there are few studies that address the participation by subsidiaries of multinational and R & D centers around the world in development projects of new products. Focusing on the perception of the Brazilian unit, this paper aims to present and analyze integration practices among subsidiaries, headquarters and R&D centers in product development projects in a multinational high tech company. For this purpose, was conducted an exploratory and qualitative researched operationalized by case study. Among the main results, it was noted collaboration between locals marketing and engineering with the R & D centers, important role of senior management in the Brazilian unit to communicate outcomes of the strategic planning of products and technologies established by the headquarters to the subsidiary, the adoption of technological and information mechanisms and the application of methods such as technology roadmap.

Abstract Considering the unique relevance of Brazilian biodiversity, this research aims to investigate the main barriers to biodiversity-based R&D and eco-design development in a leading national company which has been commended for its innovation and sustainability. The methodology for this research was based on on-location visits, in-depth interviews, and consensus building among R&D, sustainability, and quality managers. A multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) approach was adopted through interpretive structural modelling (ISM), a method that assists decision makers to transform complex models with unclear data into structural models. Some of the most influential barriers to biodiversity-based eco-design initiatives are “lack of legal incentive”, “not enough demand from the market”, and “not enough available knowledge/scientific data.” The most relevant barrier was “no legal incentive” from government. Consequently, managers should concentrate their efforts in tackling those barriers that may affect other barriers known as ‘key barriers’. Government should work decisively toward promoting a framework of legal incentives for bio-based eco-design; otherwise, metaphorically, “there is not carnival without the samba singer who pushes the rhythm”. The results given here reveal the barriers for bio-based eco-design in a Brazilian leading company, and this is the first work combining ISM to barriers to biodiversity R&D and eco-design.
