Abstract Sea lice (Caligus rogercresseyi) are external parasites that affect farmed salmonids in Chile, and the scale of their sanitary and economic impact cannot be overstated. Even though space–time patterns suppose parasite aggregation, specific locations related to different infestation levels, as well as their associated factors across the geographic range involved, had not been investigated as of the writing of the present article. The understanding of the effects and factors entailed by the presence of C. rogercresseyi may be deemed a key element of Integrated Pest Management (IPM). In the present study, the multivariate spatial scan statistic was used to identify geographic areas and times of C. rogercresseyi infestation and to estimate the factors associated with such patterns. We used official C. rogercresseyi monitoring data at the farm level, with a set of 13 covariates, to provide adjustment within the analyses. The analyses were carried out for a period of 5 years (2012–2016), and they included three fish species (Salmo salar, Oncorhynchus mykiss, and Oncorhynchus kisutch) in order to assess the consistency of the identified clusters. A retrospective multinomial, spatial, and temporal scan test was implemented to identify farm clusters of either of the different categories of C. rogercresseyi infested farms: baseline, medium, and high, based on the control chemical threshold established by the health authority. The baseline represents adequate farm performance against C. rogercresseyi infestation. Then, production and environmental factors of the medium and high infestation farms were compared with the baseline using regression techniques. The results revealed a total of 26 clusters (p < 0.001), of which 12 correspond to baseline, 1 to medium, and the remaining 13 to high infestation clusters. In general, baseline clusters are detected in a latitudinal gradient on estuarine areas, with increasing relative risks to complex island water systems. There is a spatial structure in specific sites, north of Los Lagos Region and central Aysén Region, with high infestation clusters and epidemic peaks during 2013. In addition, average weight, salmon species, chemotherapeutants, latitude, temperature, salinity, and year category are factors associated with these C. rogercresseyi patterns. Recommendations for an IPM plan are provided, along with a discussion that considers the involvement of stock density thresholds by salmon species and the spatial structure of the efficacy of chemical control, both intended to avoid the advance of resistance and to minimize environmental residues.

Abstract The infection of blue whiting Micromesistius poutassou from the western Mediterranean Sea, off the eastern coast of Spain, with larvae of Anisakis spp. was studied. Between April 2016 and April 2017, 140 fish were analyzed. Total epidemiological data showed that the prevalence of Anisakis spp. was 29.3% and the mean intensity 1.8. Of the 74 larvae collected, 61% were type I and the remaining 39%, type II. Of the former, 91% were molecularly identified as Anisakis pegreffii (P = 19.3%; MI = 1.4), 2.2% as Anisakis simplex s.s. (P = 0.7%; MI = 1.0), while the rest (6.7%) showed a recombinant genotype between the two (P = 2.1%; MI = 1.0). All the type II larvae analyzed were molecularly identified as Anisakis physeteris (P = 10.0%; MI = 2.1). Three fish (2.1%) were found to have larvae in the muscle, while two were found with 1 larva of A. pegreffii and one with two larvae (1 A. simplex s.s. and 1 A. pegreffii). Statistical analysis showed that the prevalence of Anisakis spp. in blue whiting was higher in spring than in autumn (P < 0.001), probably due to the greater size (and age) of the fish and related to factors as diet shift, accumulation with age and higher food intake. Analysis of the data suggested that blue whiting were first infected with Anisakis type I (mean age 2.3 years) and later with Anisakis type II (mean age 2.7 years), probably due to the diet changing with age, with the incorporation of the paratenic/intermediate host species of these parasites. In any case, the public health authorities must continue to emphasize the need for suitable thermal treatment (freezing or cooking) of the fish prior to consumption.

Abstract The analytical performance and evaluation of a kit-based ELISA for the determination of acrylamide in fried potato and corn chip samples are described. The sample homogenate is subjected to clean-up using SPE, followed by analyte derivatization and ELISA detection. Accuracy, precision and linearity of the ELISA procedure have been validated using spiked samples. Analytical recovery ranged from 91.8% to 96.0% with coefficients of variation below 15%. Good linearity over a wide range of dilution and minimal assay drift was observed within a microtiter plate. IC50 value of the calibration curve was 110ng/mL, with the limit of detection about 5ng/mL and dynamic range from 10 to 1000ng/mL. The high specificity of the ELISA was demonstrated by cross-reactivity study using 11 potential cross-reactants. A good correlation between the results obtained from the ELISA and GC–MS within the concentration range 120–1500μg/kg was found in the chip samples (r=0.992, n=120). The data demonstrate that the evaluated and validated ELISA has a potential utility in a quick, simple and reliable acrylamide screening analysis for the medium- and large-sized food companies, as well as for residue laboratories and the food industry dealing with improving the chemical safety of foods available to the consumer.

Abstract Technological changes during the second part of the Middle Pleistocene in Europe are crucial sources of information as they are considered to be evidence of the transition between two distinct periods; the Lower Palaeolithic and the Middle Palaeolithic. The application of experimental technical (mode of percussion) and technological (core technology) analyses contributes to a more accurate appraisal of these technological changes and renews traditional approaches to the study of Early Middle Palaeolithic lithic assemblages. In this paper, the analysis of the level Ga assemblage from Payre, dated to the end of isotopic stage 8 – beginning of stage 7, based on the technological analysis of the archaeological assemblage and experimental methodologies, indicates that Pre-Neanderthals adopted a variety of technological solutions during the earliest occupations of this site. At Orgnac 3, the reduction process in level 1 was mainly based on Levallois core technology (even if different methods were applied) and a ramified process (with many core-flakes), whereas the débitage in level Ga at Payre was generally unifacial on flakes and orthogonal, but primarily reveals technical and technological strategies related to both Quina, discoid and Levallois débitage concepts.Early Middle Palaeolithic assemblages, as represented by level Ga at Payre, could attest to the presence of a technical and technological “pool of knowledge” for some hominin groups as early as MIS 8–7, with sequential applications of different methods on the same core. This technological behavior would thus represent a phase of transition observed in some assemblages between the Lower Palaeolithic and the Late Middle Palaeolithic strategies. This behavior differs from standardized technology during the Late Middle Palaeolithic, as documented in Western Europe, before the outbreak of technological variability which occurred at roughly the same time as the arrival of the first modern humans during MIS 3. Hypotheses for explaining this transitional phase are discussed in relation to other examples of assemblages.

Abstract Objective: To cross-culturally adapt and check for the reliability and validity of the neurogenic bladder symptom score questionnaire to Brazilian portuguese, in patients with spinal cord injury and multiple sclerosis.
Materials and methods: The questionnaire was culturally adapted according to international guidelines. The Brazilian version was applied in patients diagnosed with neurogenic bladder due to spinal cord injury or multiple sclerosis, twice in a range of 7 to 14 days. Psychometric properties were tested such as content validity, construct validity, internal consistency, and test-retest reliability.
Results: Sixty-eight patients participated in the study. Good internal consistency of the Portuguese version was observed, with Cronbach α of 0.81. The test-retest reliability was also high, with an Intraclass Correlation Coefficient of 0.86 [0.76 - 0.92] (p<0.0001). In the construct validity, the Pearson Correlation revealed a moderate correlation between the Portuguese version of the NBSS and the Qualiveen-SF questionnaire (r = 0.66 [0.40-0.82]; p<0.0001).
Conclusions: The process of cross-cultural adaptation and validation of the NBSS questionnaire for the Brazilian Portuguese in patients with neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction was concluded.

Abstract Background: Epidemiological features of spinal cord injury (SCI) have been changing over the last decades. We evaluated the contemporary trends in the epidemiology of traumatic SCI patients from a rehabilitation center.
Methods: In a cross-sectional study, a consecutive series of 348 patients with traumatic SCI were evaluated. Variables were collected through an epidemiological form, which included gender, age at injury, duration and cause of SCI. We investigated SCI epidemiological trends over time including the association between gender and age at injury with SCI features such as etiology, injury severity and level.
Results: The mean age at SCI has increased from 26.0 ± 11.8 in patients with SCI before 2003 to 37.9 ± 15.7 in those with SCI after 2009 (p < 0.001). Gunshot wounds were the main cause of injury in patients with SCI before 2003, dropping from 40.6 to 16.9% after 2009 and being surpassed by road traffic injuries (38.6%) and falls (31.4%) after 2009 (p < 0.001). Gender, SCI severity and level have not changed significantly over the time.
Conclusions: There was a major increase in the average age of patients as well as changes in the etiology of SCI over the past fifteen years, including a significant decrease in gunshot wounds and an increase in the frequency of road traffic injuries and falls. These changes and accompanying risk factors must be taken into consideration when planning measures to prevent SCI.
