    Abstract K. C. Das is deservedly one of the most celebrated writers in India today. He writes primarily in Oriya, the language of his native state of Orissa, where he was born in 1924. A civil servant by profession, Das pursued a second career as a writer of stories, poems, and essays. The stories in this collection take place in an urban setting. The characters are mainly middle class, making them more accessible to North American readers than other examples of contemporary Indian fiction. These are not simple stories. They are about "divides," about gaps between realities and imagination. In complex shifts between direct dialogue, interior monologue, and interior or imagined dialogue, Das lovingly but mercilessly exposes his characters thoughts, self-deceptions, and the games they play with each other. These are stories about human weaknesses, the fallibility of human relationships, and the strategies we adopt to cope with our failures. They are about coming to terms with unpleasant, sometimes shocking truths about ourselves and others

    Abstract Graduate medical education and training in Cytopathology faced numerous unexpected challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020. It was caused by the SARS-Co-V2 coronavirus and transmitted by breathing droplets or aerosol particles containing the virus and less commonly by contact with infected surfaces and fomites. To mitigate the rapid spread of disease non-essential services were closed, surgical procedures were prioritized, and "social distancing" was implemented. These measures led to a marked decline in the volume of specimens, number of fine needle aspiration (FNA) and rapid on-site evaluation procedures performed. The trainees in Pathology were required to stay at home either entirely or partly during the early period of the pandemic. This led to re-designing of the cytopathology training program nationwide. Many innovative methods and protocols were put in place to overcome the challenges faced and adjustments made in creating the virtual training program in Cytopathology. On May 5th, 2023, the WHO declared that COVID-19 was no longer a global emergency. Regulations were lifted and healthcare services returned to pre-pandemic era. Graduate medical education and training returned to normal however many changes were incorporated into the training program moving forward. Herein the impacts and innovations that COVID-19 had on Cytopathology training are described.

    Abstract The novel coronavirus or severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is a deadly virus which has spread globally and claimed millions of lives. This novel virus transmits mainly through droplets and close human contact. It's impact in different countries varies depending on geographical location, climatic conditions, food habits, and cultural activities. Several precautionary measures, as well as many medicines, are applied in different combinations to limit the spread of infection. This results in a preliminary relief of people infected in the first stage of infection. An alternative approach has been introduced which proposes natural herbs, which have minimal or no side effects, and improve overall immunity. Some essential herbs with their immunomodulatory effects are mentioned in this article along with suggestions for improved immunity and protection.

    Abstract A new era of gene and cell therapy for treating human diseases has been envisioned for several decades. However, given that the technology can alter any DNA/cell in human beings, it poses specific ethical, legal, and social difficulties in its application. In Malaysia, current bioethics and medical ethics guidelines tackle clinical trials and biomedical research, medical genetic services, and stem cell research/therapy. However, no comprehensive framework and policy is available to cater to ethical gene and cell therapy in the country. Incorporating ethical, legal, and social implications (ELSI) would be crucial to guide the appropriate use of human gene and cell therapy in conjunction with precision medicine. Policy experts, scientists, bioethicists, and public members must debate the associated ELSI and the professional code of conduct while preserving human rights.

    Abstract Background: India has been badly affected by Covid-19 not only in terms of human lives but also has a long-term effect on mental health of the population. This paper is an attempt to understand the psychological effects of the pandemic on the college and university students in India after the second wave of COVID-19 outbreak and its associated factors.
    Method: A web-based survey was conducted to collect information from the students both at individual and household level. The study applied binary and multivariate logistic regression to estimate the adjusted and unadjusted marginal effects of the predictor variables.
    Result: Results show a significant increase in mental health concerns during the second wave of the pandemic, as compared to the first year. The key factors contributing to the higher prevalence of depression, anxiety, and stress are the difficulties faced in the adaptation to the new way of learning, fear of discontinuation of education due to financial constraints faced by household, limited physical interaction, and prolonged screen-time during the pandemic.
    Limitation: The study has some limitations regarding selection of the sample as the survey was web-based. Also, the mental health situation of the students is self-reported and the study does not consider the prevailing mental health issues before the pandemic.
    Conclusion: The study recommends initiatives like offering counselling classes and strategies to cope up with mental health disorders. Further, there is a need to conduct follow-up studies to assess the long-term impacts of prolonged home quarantine on the mental health of the students.

    Abstract Eukaryotic cells have distinct membrane-enclosed organelles, each with a unique biochemical signature and specialized function. The unique identity of each organelle is greatly governed by the asymmetric distribution and regulated intracellular movement of two important biomolecules, lipids, and proteins. Non-vesicular lipid transport mediated by lipid-transfer proteins (LTPs) plays essential roles in intra-cellular lipid trafficking and cellular lipid homeostasis, while vesicular transport regulates protein trafficking. A comparative analysis of non-vesicular lipid transport machinery in protists could enhance our understanding of parasitism and basis of eukaryotic evolution.

    Abstract The absolute configuration dictates the biological role of chiral molecules in the living world. This is best exemplified by all ribosomally synthesized polypeptides having chiral amino acids only in the l-configuration. However, d-amino acids are also associated with various vital biological processes such as peptidoglycan of the bacterial cell wall, ligands for neurotransmitters, molecules involved in signaling, and precursors of metabolites, to name a few. The occurrence of both l- and d-enantiomers of amino acids in the living systems necessitates the presence of enzymes that exhibit stereoselectivity in recognition of substrates. This mini-review summarizes the overall mechanistic insights into the interconversion of l- and d-amino acids by the amino acid racemases. We discuss the structural, mechanistic, and evolutionary relationship of four crucial enzymes that catalyze the oxidative deamination of l- or d-amino acids and their physiological role in microbes and higher organisms. We highlight the physiological implications of d-amino acid oxidase and d-aspartate oxidase in human health and diseases and their applications as drug targets. Finally, we summarize the potential applications of microbially obtained chiral-selective enzymes as biocatalysts and for various industrial purposes.

    Abstract Evaluating the linkage between soil erosion and sediment connectivity for export assessment in different landscape patterns at catchment scale is valuable for optimization of soil and water conservation (SWC) practices. Present research attempts to identify the soil erosion susceptible (SES) sites in Kangsabati River Basin (KRB) using machine learning algorithm (decision trees, decision trees cross validation, CV, Extreme Gradient Boosting, XGB CV and bagging CV) taken thirty five variables, for investigating the linkage between erosion rates and sediment connectivity to assess the sediment export at sub-basin level employing connectivity index (IC) and Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Tradeoffs (InVEST) sediment delivery ratio (SDR) model. Based on AUC of receiving operating curve in validation test, excellent capacity of extreme Gradient Boosting, XGB CV and bagging CV (0.95, 0.90) than decision tree and decision tree CV (0.78, 0.82), exhibits about 18.58 % of basin areas facing susceptible to very high erosion. Conversely, considering universal soil loss equation (RUSLE) parameters, InVEST-SDR model estimated about 64.24 % of soil loss rate occurred from high SES in where sediment export rate become very high (136.995 t/ha
