    Abstract There is a severe issue with groundwater overuse and water scarcity in the North China Plain. The capacity of groundwater resources to promote economic development is also diminished due to the overexploitation of resources to suit the industrial needs of diverse sectors. Therefore, it is crucial to research the regional groundwater resource carrying capacity from both a temporal and spatial perspective. The relationship between water usage efficiency and groundwater availability, which was built using regional data on water supply and consumption as well as gross domestic product, is used in this study to assess the carrying capacity of Hebei’s groundwater resources through time and space. The results show that from the perspective of time, in the years when the groundwater resource exploitation degree is greater than one from 2010 to 2017, the contribution rate of the groundwater resource exploitation to economic development reaches 62.5%, indicating that the economic development of the study area is highly dependent on the groundwater resources. The exploitation degree of groundwater resources is less than one, but the degree of economic development value keeps increasing to nearly 80% and the overexploitation rate is 75% in the total time scale. In terms of spatial scale, only Hengshui City has no overexploitation index, and the overexploitation rate is 9.1%. The overload and severe overload areas account for 45.45%, respectively. Among them, the exploitation degree of groundwater has been in a state of over-saturation, and as economic development depends on groundwater resources, water efficiency needs to be improved through water saving. Optimizing and promoting industrial structures and water-saving technology to further improve water efficiency are key factors to improve the carrying capacity of groundwater resources.

    Abstract In water resources management on a global scale, it is important to reconcile the conflicting interests of different regions and actors regarding water use. To solve this issue more effectively, an optimal allocation model of water resources that coordinates the interests of regional multi-level water resource managers and balances the benefits acquired by regional multi-level water resource managers was proposed. The model consisted of three components, including option generation, option selection, and fallback bargaining. The Hybrid Strategy Whale Optimization Algorithm (HSWOA) was created to generate the initial alternative set throughout the alternative generation process. In the alternative screening process, quick non-dominated sorting was used to choose Pareto alternatives from the initial alternative set. Through many rounds of negotiations, water resource managers at all levels reached a consensual water resource allocation plan during fallback bargaining. This model was used to reconcile the conflicting water interests of municipal and county water managers in Handan, China, in terms of economic, social, and ecological benefits. It was also compared with the Pareto solution set obtained from NSGA-III. In terms of convergence speed and accuracy, the results demonstrated that HSWOA outperformed the Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA). The results show that several rounds of discussions between municipal and county water management eventually resulted in Nash equilibrium. In normal flow year, the recommended scheme could yield economic benefit of 315.08×108 Yuan, social benefit of 0.1700, and ecological benefit of 5.70 × 106 m3, whereas in low flow year, the recommended scheme could yield economic benefit of 354.85×108 Yuan, social benefit of 0.2103, and ecological benefit of 57.82 × 106 m3.     Abstract Abstract Background Porcine epidemic diarrhea (PED) is a contagious intestinal disease caused by porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) characterized by vomiting, diarrhea, anorexia, and dehydration, which have caused huge economic losses around the world. At present, vaccine immunity is still the most effective method to control the spread of PED. In this study, we have constructed a novel recombinant L. casei-OMP16-PEDVS strain expressing PEDVS protein of PEDV and OMP16 protein of Brucella abortus strain. To know the immunogenicity of the recombinant L. casei-OMP16-PEDVS candidate vaccine, it was compared with BL21-OMP16-PEDVS-F, BL21-OMP16-PEDVS, and BL21-PEDVS recombinant protein. Results The results showed that we could detect higher levels of IgG, neutralizing antibody, IL-4, IL-10, and INF-γ in serum and IgA in feces of L. casei-OMP16-PEDVS immunized mice, which indicated that L. casei-OMP16-PEDVS candidate vaccine could induce higher levels of humoral immunity, cellular immunity, and mucosal immunity. Conclusion Therefore, L. casei-OMP16-PEDVS is a promising candidate vaccine for prophylaxis of PEDV infection.

    Abstract As a hazardous chemical, p-chloroaniline (PCA) shows intensive adsorption and accumulation after entering the aquatic ecosystem, which can be enriched in organisms and cause damage. With the objective of achieving an integrated and mechanistic view of the toxic effects of PCA in the marine sentinel organism Ruditapes philippinarum , Manila clams were exposed to different concentration of PCA (0.5, 2 and 5 mg/L) for 15 days. Focusing on the gills, first targeting the toxic and digestive gland, the metabolic detoxification organ, we detected dose- and time-related changes inantioxidase activities and biomacromolecular damages in treated clams. Glutathione S-transferase (GST) activity and glutathione (GSH) contents were significantly induced, and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity increased at the beginning of exposure and then decreased. The malondialdehyde (MDA) and protein methylation (PC) contents which represent lipid peroxidation and carbonylation of proteins, increased first with exposure time and then decreased in the digestive gland. DNA strand break levels were consistently higher than those in the control group. The digestive gland showed more sensitivity to the stress of PCA than the gills. GST and MDA in the gill and GST, GSH, SOD, DNA strand break level in the digestive gland showed significant correlation with PCA exposure, which indicated that these parameters can be used as sensitive biomarkers to indicate toxic effects from chloraniline leakage.

    Abstract The human risk assessment model can serve as a tool for regional contaminated site comprehensive management. However, site-specific risk assessment is still seldom applied in China as a basis for making decisions on risk management actions. In this study, a total of 112 soil samples were collected from ten polluted sites in Southwest China. The human health risk assessment method was used to assess the risk of Cd, As, Cu, Pb, Cr, Zn, and Hg pollution. According to the findings, the average concentrations of As, Zn, and Pb in contaminated sites are substantially higher than those of Cu, Cd, Cr, and Hg. Further studies conclusively showed the soil at contaminated site in its present condition pose risk to human health to potential future receptors. The main contribution of non-cancer and cancer risks was through incidental soil and dust ingestion. The priority control site remediation order is Region VI > Region V > Region IV > Region III > Region VII > Region X > Region IX > Region VIII > Region I > Region II. Finally, management recommendations are made, including reducing pollutant intake, implementing a stringent monitoring scheme, utilizing bioremediation, and strengthening the implementation of relevant laws. This study provides a case for the comprehensive evaluation of soil pollution at contaminated sites in China.

    Abstract The contamination of surface water by pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) has attracted widespread attention, but data regarding their impacts on groundwater (GW) are sparse. In river–GW interaction areas, rivers are likely an important source of PPCPs in aquifers, especially rivers impacted by sewage treatment plant effluent. Understanding the characterization, transport, and risk is valuable for the effective protection of vital aquatic ecosystem services, environmental health, and drinking water supplies. To attain this objective, statistics with spatial analysis and ecological risk were used to assess the effects of artificial recharge (AR) engineering on 16 PPCPs in aquifers in North China. The results indicated that 15 PPCPs were detected in unconfined and confined aquifers, with a few PPCPs being detected up to 1,000 ng/L. The most frequently detected PPCPs were sulfisoxazole, sulfachloropyridazine, sulfamerazine, sulfamethazine, sulfamethoxazole, and ibuprofen. In addition, the spatial and seasonal variations in most PPCPs were significant. Furthermore, the maximum concentrations were compared to the predicted no-effect concentrations to evaluate the ecological risk, and four PPCPs were found to be of medium or high ecological risk. This study highlights that AR engineering has a significant ecological effect on GW.

    Abstract The Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) satellite solutions have been considerably applied to assess the reliability of hydrological models on a global scale. However, no single hydrological model can be suitable for all regions. Here, a New Statistical Correction Hydrological Model Weighting (NSCHMW) method is developed based on the root mean square error and correlation coefficient between hydrological models and GRACE mass concentration (mascon) data. The NSCHMW method can highlight the advantages of good models compared with the previous average method. Additionally, to verify the effect of the NSCHMW method, taking the Haihe River Basin (HRB) as an example, the spatiotemporal patterns of Terrestrial Water Storage Anomalies (TWSA) in HRB are analyzed through a comprehensive comparison of decadal trends (2003–2014) from GRACE and different hydrological models (Noah from GLDAS-2.1, VIC from GLDAS-2.1, CLSM from GLDAS-2.1, CLSM from GLDAS-2.0, WGHM, PCR-GLOBWB, and CLM-4.5). Besides, the NSCHMW method is applied to estimate TWSA trends in the HRB. Results demonstrate that (1) the NSCHMW method can improve the accuracy of TWSA estimation by hydrological models; (2) the TWSA trends continue to decrease through the study period at a rate of 15.7 mm/year; (3) the WGHM and PCR-GLOBWB have positive reliability with respect to GRACE with r > 0.9, while all the other models underestimate TWSA trends; (4) the NSCHMW method can effectively improve RMSE, NES , and r with 3–96%, 35–282%, 1–255%, respectively, by weighting the WGHM and PCR-GLOBWB. Indeed, groundwater depletion in HRB also proves the necessity of the South-North Water Diversion Project, which has already contributed to groundwater recovery.

    Abstract The lotus ( Nelumbo Adans.) is a perennial aquatic plant with important value in horticulture, medicine, food, religion, and culture. It is rich in germplasm and more than 2000 cultivars have been cultivated through hybridization and natural selection. Microsporogenesis and male gametogenesis in the anther are important for hybridization in flowering plants. However, little is known about the cytological events, especially related to the stamen, during the reproduction of the lotus. To better understand the mechanism controlling the male reproductive development of the lotus, we investigated the flower structure of the Asian lotus ( N. nucifera ). The cytological analysis of anther morphogenesis showed both the common and specialized cytological events as well as the formation of mature pollen grains via meiosis and mitosis during lotus anther development. Intriguingly, an anatomical difference in anther appendage structures was observed between the Asian lotus and the American lotus ( N. lutea ). To facilitate future study on lotus male reproduction, we categorized pollen development into 11 stages according to the characterized cytological events. This discovery expands our knowledge on the pollen and appendage development of the lotus as well as improving the understanding of the species differentiation of N. nucifera and N. lutea .

    Abstract Black rice (Oryza sativa L.), whose pericarp is rich in anthocyanins (ACNs), is considered as a healthier alternative to white rice. Molecular species of ACNs in black rice have been well documented in previous studies; however, information about the metabolic mechanisms underlying ACN biosynthesis during black rice grain development is unclear.The aim of the present study was to determine changes in the metabolic pathways that are involved in the dynamic grain proteome during the development of black rice indica cultivar, (Oryza sativa L. indica var. SSP). Isobaric tags for relative and absolute quantification (iTRAQ) MS/MS were employed to identify statistically significant alterations in the grain proteome. Approximately 928 proteins were detected, of which 230 were differentially expressed throughout 5 successive developmental stages, starting from 3 to 20 days after flowering (DAF). The greatest number of differentially expressed proteins was observed on 7 and 10 DAF, including 76 proteins that were upregulated and 39 that were downregulated. The biological process analysis of gene ontology revealed that the 230 differentially expressed proteins could be sorted into 14 functional groups. Proteins in the largest group were related to metabolic process, which could be integrated into multiple biochemical pathways. Specifically, proteins with a role in ACN biosynthesis, sugar synthesis, and the regulation of gene expression were upregulated, particularly from the onset of black rice grain development and during development. In contrast, the expression of proteins related to signal transduction, redox homeostasis, photosynthesis and N-metabolism decreased during grain maturation.     Abstract Asian lotus (Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn.) is the national flower of India, Vietnam, and one of the top ten traditional Chinese flowers. Although lotus is highly valued for its ornamental, economic and cultural uses, genomic information, particularly the expressed sequence based (genic) markers is limited. High-throughput transcriptome sequencing provides large amounts of transcriptome data for promoting gene discovery and development of molecular markers.In this study, 68,593 unigenes were assembled from 1.34 million 454 GS-FLX sequence reads of a mixed flower-bud cDNA pool derived from three accessions of N. nucifera. A total of 5,226 SSR loci were identified, and 3,059 primer pairs were designed for marker development. Di-nucleotide repeat motifs were the most abundant type identified with a frequency of 65.2%, followed by tri- (31.7%), tetra- (2.1%), penta- (0.5%) and hexa-nucleotide repeats (0.5%). A total of 575 primer pairs were synthesized, of which 514 (89.4%) yielded PCR amplification products. In eight Nelumbo accessions, 109 markers were polymorphic. They were used to genotype a sample of 44 accessions representing diverse wild and cultivated genotypes of Nelumbo. The number of alleles per locus varied from 2 to 9 alleles and the polymorphism information content values ranged from 0.6 to 0.9. We performed genetic diversity analysis using 109 polymorphic markers. A UPGMA dendrogram was constructed based on Jaccard's similarity coefficients revealing distinct clusters among the 44 accessions.Deep transcriptome sequencing of lotus flower buds developed 3,059 genic SSRs, making a significant addition to the existing SSR markers in lotus. Among them, 109 polymorphic markers were successfully validated in 44 accessions of Nelumbo. This comprehensive set of genic SSR markers developed in our study will facilitate analyses of genetic diversity, construction of linkage maps, gene mapping, and marker-assisted selection breeding for lotus.
