Abstract Aim: To explore the experiences and needs of partners who are supporting adolescents and young adults with cancer. The diagnosis of cancer at any age is significant. Uniquely, in adolescents and young adults this is set against the backdrop of early adult development. This is at a time when young people may be embarking on new experiences and the development of romantic relationships is no exception. There is limited evidence of how partners cope during this time and what their role is alongside how the relationship may change over time.
Design: An exploratory qualitative study using narrative enquiry.
Methods: The protocol was approved in February 2018 and data will be collected between May - December 2018. The theoretical approach will incorporate positioning theory by considering the contextual situation of the partner with reference to their stories, including their rights and duties. Two interviews will be undertaken which will be approximately 2 months apart, where participants will be asked to share their stories. They will also be given a diary at the end of the first interview to record their thoughts about their role and relationship. The diary and interview data will be thematically analysed.
Discussion: It is envisaged that the study will culminate in the identification of key themes which will illuminate the experiences, needs and roles of partners of adolescents and young adults with cancer.
Impact: These findings will inform the development of guidance which will help partners in the future in this area of practice.

Abstract So many new trials of drugs for CF are being conducted each year it can be difficult to keep up. Yet, almost as numerous are the review articles written about them. I have chosen therefore to use this paper to discuss some of the difficult ethical issues arising during trials, in particular how to fairly distribute opportunities to participate. Some of these issues may be specific to countries like my own with very limited access to genotype-specific CFTR modulators, others may apply more generally. We have made enormous progress as a community over the recent past, but there is still much more to do before all our patients are reaping health and quality of life benefits.

Abstract Background: Research exploring nurse-parent relationships in children's hospices is rare.
Aim: To investigate how children's hospice nurses manage emotional labour and professional integrity in their long-term relationships with parents.
Methods: A purposive sample of six children's nurses, from hospices across England, recorded audio diaries and participated in telephone interviews. Narratives were thematically analysed.
Findings: Three overarching, cross-cutting themes were identified-purposeful positioning; balancing personability and professionalism; coping with and counterbalancing emotional labour. All themes were indicative of and/or built upon emotional intelligence constructs, such as self-awareness, self-regulation, appropriate (managed) empathy, social skills and intrinsic motivation. Innate features of children's hospice work were important for perpetuating intrinsic motivation and satisfaction.
Conclusion: This study provided an insight into the management of emotional labour and professional integrity by experienced children's hospice nurses. The identification of emotional intelligence skills merits further exploration in this environment, as well as other children's palliative care settings.

Abstract The pandemic has accelerated the drive towards telemedicine for people with cystic fibrosis - but the system needs critical appraisal, says Jane Davies Care for people with cystic fibrosis involves frequent hospital visits For these reasons, alternative solutions have been considered over the past few years, including telemedicine and video consultations, the provision of home monitoring equipment (such as spirometers to measure lung function), the use of smart devices to motivate and measure adherence to treatment, and research into point-of-care diagnostics for infection Once the pressures of the current situation have lessened, it is imperative that this question is fully addressed by, for example, the studies within a trial approach launched by the UK National Institute for Health Research
