Abstract Vegetation monitoring of arid and semi-arid environments using remotely sensed vegetation indices over long periods of time is essential to improve the understanding of the processes related to change. In this paper, 30years of biweekly AVHRR NDVI3g (1982–2011) were used to examine the spatial and temporal patterns of vegetation productivity and phenology across Namaqualand, a winter-rainfall desert of South Africa. We applied a previously developed threshold based method, TIMESAT, to extract phenological metrics such as the start, peak, end and length of the growing season and estimates of productivity such as the small and large integral of NDVI. The results confirm that the vegetation in Namaqualand is strongly influenced by rainfall and that it varies considerably along rainfall gradients. A clear pattern of vegetation seasonality is observed where the growing cycle starts in autumn (March–April) and extends through the wet winter months with peak growth occurring in late-winter (August). The analysis of trends over the 30years suggests that there has been a shift in vegetation phenology over Namaqualand to an earlier start, later end and consequently an increase in the length of the growing season, especially in the northern parts of the region. Vegetation productivity, as reflected in the small and large integrals, has also increased over many areas in Namaqualand. Although it is difficult to attribute the changes to any one factor, increases in temperature, changes in land use practices and an increase in the concentration of atmospheric CO2 are advised as possible reasons for the observed changes. Continued monitoring using finer spatial scale vegetation indices is essential to track the progression of these trends in the future.

Abstract Thymidine uptake and incorporation by marine bacterial isolates from an upwelling environment were studied. Of 17 isolates each from upwelled and downwelled water, 1 and 6 isolates, respectively, were found to be negative for [H]thymidine incorporation at a substrate concentration of 19 muM. Strains lacking the ability to take up thymidine were not confined to one genus. The measurable rates of uptake and incorporation by the 34 isolates varied greatly. Studies carried out using starved Vibrio, Pseudomonas, and Cytophaga cells showed that these isolates transported and incorporated thymidine after periods of as long as 5 weeks of nutrient deprivation. This occurred in the absence of any other exogenously supplied nutrients. Overall, these results indicate that not all marine bacteria take up thymidine and that those that do incorporate the nucleoside may do so at very different rates. The assumption that only actively growing or dividing cells incorporate thymidine must be viewed with caution.

Abstract Interferon-alpha and cytotoxic chemotherapy may be effective treatment modalities for the post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder. Interferon-alpha may result in a complete response in up to 40% of patients, while chemotherapy may be effective in 75% of those failing local surgical excision, a reduction in immunosuppression, and an antiviral agent. Interferon may be used early after diagnosis in patients with relatively slowly growing tumors. Chemotherapy should be selected for patients with bulky, rapidly growing malignancies. The toxicity of chemotherapy may be minimized by discontinuing maintenance immunosuppression during chemotherapy, administering GCSF, and providing antimicrobial prophylaxis. Rejection is minimized by the reintroduction of maintenance immunosuppression when the patient is no longer neutropenic.
