Abstract Heap's Law states that in a large enough text corpus, the number of types as a function of tokens grows as $N=KM^\beta$ for some free parameters $K,\beta$. Much has been written about how this result and various generalizations can be derived from Zipf's Law. Here we derive from first principles a completely novel expression of the type-token curve and prove its superior accuracy on real text. This expression naturally generalizes to equally accurate estimates for counting hapaxes and higher $n$-legomena.

Abstract Parents need information and skills to meet the demands of mediating connected technology in their homes. Parents' methods and motivations for learning to protect children from digital risks were reported through a survey. This study explores relationships between information seeking, parents' concerns, risks children have experienced, and access to connected devices, in addition to the use and satisfaction of various digital safety resources. Three types of information-seeking behavior were identified: (a) protective information seeking, to protect children from being confronted with harmful content; (b) problem-solving information seeking, to help children who have been negatively affected by connected technology; and (c) attentive learning, by attending to media resources passively encountered on this topic. Friends and family are the dominant source of digital safety information, followed by presentations and the Internet. Parents' top concerns for their children using connected technology were accidental exposure to pornography, and sexual content in Internet-based entertainment. Higher numbers of risks experienced by children were positively associated with parents' problem-solving information seeking and level of attentive learning. Parents who were more concerned exhibited more problem-solving information seeking; but despite the high level of concern for children's safety online, 65 percent of parents seek information on this subject less than twice per year. Children have access to a mean of five connected devices at home; a higher number of devices was correlated with increased risks experienced by children, but was not associated with increased concern or information seeking from parents.

Abstract This review aims to identify whether the seed voucher and SVF/DiNER model can be modified over time (e.g., 2-5 years) to build capacity within the seed sector to support the emergence of a sustainable, market-based seed system that offers quality, affordable seeds to smallholder male and female farmers. This scoping report presents a review of the wide variety of approaches that have been tested or recommended across International NGOs. These include both adjustments to the seed voucher and SVF/DiNER model itself as well as additional activities implemented alongside or in place of SVF/DiNER fairs to address market constraints and promote the emergence of alternative viable seed markets.

Abstract Objective: To evaluate vitamin D status in very low birth weight (VLBW) infants and response to vitamin D intake.
Study design: In this prospective cohort study of VLBW infants, 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] was measured regularly starting at birth. Daily vitamin D intake was estimated from parenteral and enteral sources.
Results: Of the included 83 infants born between November 2016 and March 2018, 44 (53%) had 25(OH)D < 30 ng/mL at birth but achieved vitamin D sufficiency (VDS) by 3 weeks while receiving 120-400 IU/day. Twenty-three (27.7%) infants had at least one 25(OH)D level >100 ng/mL during the study period. Infants whose intake was > 600 IU/day had higher prevalence of vitamin D excess (VDE).
Conclusion: In our study, low 25(OH)D was common in VLBW infants at birth. Vitamin D intake of 120-260 IU/day from parenteral and 200-400 IU/day from enteral route was appropriate for VLBW infants to achieve VDS. Doses > 600 IU/day increased risk of VDE.

Abstract Burn injuries carry an increased risk of intra-abdominal hypertension and are an independent risk factor for abdominal compartment syndrome (ACS). ACS is most commonly due to large volume resuscitation. The added concern of ACS can complicate resuscitative efforts. Early monitoring for ACS (intra-abdominal pressure > 20 mm Hg with associated new-onset organ dysfunction) and performing prudent decompressive laparotomies are important factors to keep in mind when treating large surface area burn patients. This case report describes the hospitalization of a 60-year-old male who presented with 45% full-thickness (FT) total body surface area (TBSA) and inhalation injury. On arrival to the emergency department (ED), he had received a total of 6 L of intravenous lactate Ringers, and vasopressors were initiated due to hypotension. During the tertiary examination it was noted that there was increased difficulty ventilating the patient, and his abdomen was becoming increasingly distended and tense. His intra-abdominal pressure was measured in the ED and found to be elevated at 32 mm Hg. The findings were suggestive of ACS and a decompressive laparotomy was performed in the ED. Upon entering the abdominal cavity, the abdominal contents extruded through the incision and diffuse venous congestion and gastric distention were noted.
