    Abstract The mini-health technology assessment (HTA) tool is valuable in assessing the quality of decisions regarding health technology management in South African public hospitals. The tool demonstrates the needs for improved decision-making and for developing an appropriate, customised instrument to support decision makers regarding medical device management. Health technology in South Africa has changed rapidly over the past two decades. Current challenges include the introduction of rapidly developing diagnostic technologies such as point-of-care testing (POCT) devices and national health insurance. The mini-HTA tool can play an important role in effective and efficient management of health technology in this setting.

    Abstract The four-component reaction of ethyl-3-oxo-4-(arylsulfanyl)butanoate, substituted aromatic aldehydes and ammonium acetate afforded novel ethyl 4-hydroxy-2,6-diaryl-5-(arylsulfanyl)-1,2,5,6-tetrahydro-3-pyridinecarboxylates. These tetrahydro-pyridine esters upon dehydrogenation with dichlorodicyanobenzoquinone (DDQ) afforded highly functionalized pyridines in excellent yields. These novel heterocycles were screened for their in vitro activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Rv using agar dilution method. Among the compounds screened, ethyl 2,6-di(2-bromophenyl)-4-hydroxy-5-(phenylsulfanyl)-3-pyridinecarboxylate was found to be the most active with a minimum inhibitory concentration of 1.33 microM against Mycobacterium tuberculosis and is 5.74 and 38.17 times more potent than the first line anti-tuberculosis (TB) drugs, ethambutol and pyrazinamide respectively.

    Abstract Novel 2-[3-(4-bromo-2-fluorobenzyl)-4-oxo-3,4-dihydro-1-phthalazinyl]acetic acid hydrazones were synthesized from phthalic anhydride by a six step synthesis and evaluated for in vitro, in vivo activities against eight mycobacterial species and Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) isocitrate lyase (ICL) enzyme inhibition studies. Among twenty six compounds N'1-[(4-nitrophenyl)methylene]-2-[3-(4-bromo-2-fluorobenzyl)-4-oxo-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-1-phthalazinyl]ethanohydrazide (7j) was found to be the most active compound in-vitro with MIC's of 0.18 and <0.09 microM against log-phase cultures of MTB and multi-drug resistant MTB respectively. Compound 7j inhibited all the eight mycobacterial species with MIC ranging from <0.09-12.25 microM and was not toxic to Vero cell lines till 122.5 microM. Seven compounds were tested against starved culture of MTB and they inhibited with MIC's ranging from 2.88-8.91 microM. Some compounds showed 45-61% inhibition against MTB ICL enzyme at 10 microM. In the in vivo animal model 7j decreased the bacterial load in lung and spleen tissues with 1.87 and 3.03-log10 protections respectively at 25 mg/kg body weight dose.

    Abstract The first measurement at the LHC of charge-dependent directed flow (v_{1}) relative to the spectator plane is presented for Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02  TeV. Results are reported for charged hadrons and D^{0} mesons for the transverse momentum intervals p_{T}>0.2  GeV/c and 3<p_{T}<6  GeV/c in the 5%-40% and 10%-40% centrality classes, respectively. The difference between the positively and negatively charged hadron v_{1} has a positive slope as a function of pseudorapidity η, dΔv_{1}/dη=[1.68±0.49(stat)±0.41(syst)]×10^{-4}. The same measurement for D^{0} and D[over ¯]^{0} mesons yields a positive value dΔv_{1}/dη=[4.9±1.7(stat)±0.6(syst)]×10^{-1}, which is about 3 orders of magnitude larger than the one of the charged hadrons. These measurements can provide new insights into the effects of the strong electromagnetic field and the initial tilt of matter created in noncentral heavy ion collisions on the dynamics of light (u, d, and s) and heavy (c) quarks. The large difference between the observed Δv_{1} of charged hadrons and D^{0} mesons may reflect different sensitivity of the charm and light quarks to the early time dynamics of a heavy ion collision. These observations challenge some recent theoretical calculations, which predicted a negative and an order of magnitude smaller value of dΔv_{1}/dη for both light flavor and charmed hadrons.<br />

    Abstract The first evidence of spin alignment of vector mesons (K^{*0} and ϕ) in heavy-ion collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is reported. The spin density matrix element ρ_{00} is measured at midrapidity (|y|<0.5) in Pb-Pb collisions at a center-of-mass energy (sqrt[s_{NN}]) of 2.76 TeV with the ALICE detector. ρ_{00} values are found to be less than 1/3 (1/3 implies no spin alignment) at low transverse momentum (p_{T}<2  GeV/c) for K^{*0} and ϕ at a level of 3σ and 2σ, respectively. No significant spin alignment is observed for the K_{S}^{0} meson (spin=0) in Pb-Pb collisions and for the vector mesons in pp collisions. The measured spin alignment is unexpectedly large but qualitatively consistent with the expectation from models which attribute it to a polarization of quarks in the presence of angular momentum in heavy-ion collisions and a subsequent hadronization by the process of recombination.
