Abstract Analytical expressions describing the electron energy distribution function (EEDF) in a dusty plasma are obtained from the homogeneous Boltzmann equation for electrons. The expressions are derived neglecting electron-electron collisions, as well as transformation of high-energy electrons into low-energy electrons at inelastic electron-atom collisions. At large electron energies, the quasiclassical approach for calculation of the EEDF is applied. For the moderate energies, we account for inelastic electron-atom collisions in the dust-free case and both inelastic electron-atom and electron-dust collisions in the dusty plasma case. Using these analytical expressions and the balance equation for dust charging, the electron energy distribution function, the effective electron temperature, the dust charge, and the dust surface potential are obtained for different dust radii and densities, as well as for different electron densities and radio-frequency (rf) field amplitudes and frequencies. The dusty plasma parameters are compared with those calculated numerically by a finite-difference method taking into account electron-electron collisions and the transformation of high-energy electrons at inelastic electron-neutral collisions. It is shown that the analytical expressions can be used for calculation of the EEDF and dusty plasma parameters at typical experimental conditions, in particular, in the positive column of a direct-current glow discharge and in the case of an rf plasma maintained by an electric field with frequency f=13.56MHz.

Abstract Transparency of a two-layer plasma structure in an external steady-state magnetic field, perpendicular to the wave incidence plane, is studied. The case of the p-polarized electromagnetic wave is considered. The electromagnetic wave is obliquely incident on the two-layer structure and is evanescent in both layers. The conditions for total transparency of the two-layer structure are found. The parametric dependencies of the transparency coefficient on the plasma slab widths, the magnitude of the wave number component, as well on the magnetic field magnitude are obtained.

Abstract The response of complex ionized gas systems to the presence of nonuniform distribution of charged grains is investigated using a kinetic model. Contrary to an existing view that the electron temperature inevitably increases in the grain-occupied region because of enhanced ionization to compensate for the electrons lost to the grains, it is shown that this happens only when the ionizing electric field increases in the electron depleted region. The results for two typical plasma systems suggest that when the ionizing electric field depends on the spatially averaged electron density, the electron temperature in the grain containing region can actually decrease.

Abstract The electric as well as the positive- and negative-ion drag forces on an isolated dust grain in an electronegative plasma are studied for large negative-ion densities, when the negative ions are not Boltzmann distributed. The investigation is carried out for submicrometer dust particles, so that the theory of Coulomb scattering is applicable for describing ion-dust interaction. Among the forces acting on the dust grain, the negative-ion drag force is found to be important. The effects of the negative-ion density, neutral-gas pressure, and dust-grain size on the forces are also considered. It is shown that by increasing the density of the negative ions one can effectively manipulate the dust grains. Our results imply that both dust voids and balls can be formed.

Abstract Transmission of a p-polarized electromagnetic wave through a two-layer plasma structure with spatially nonuniform distributions of electron density in the layers is studied. The case, when the electromagnetic wave is obliquely incident on the structure and is evanescent in both plasma layers, is considered. The conditions for total transparency of the two-layer structure are found for the thin slab case and when the plasma inhomogeneity is weak. It is shown that the transmission coefficient of the p-polarized wave can be about unity, even if the plasma inhomogeneity is large. The effects of plasma inhomogeneity on transparency of the structure are more important if the slabs are thick, comparing with the case of thin layers.

Abstract A global, or averaged, model for complex low-pressure argon discharge plasmas containing dust grains is presented. The model consists of particle and power balance equations taking into account power loss on the dust grains and the discharge wall. The electron energy distribution is determined by a Boltzmann equation. The effects of the dust and the external conditions, such as the input power and neutral gas pressure, on the electron energy distribution, the electron temperature, the electron and ion number densities, and the dust charge are investigated. It is found that the dust subsystem can strongly affect the stationary state of the discharge by dynamically modifying the electron energy distribution, the electron temperature, the creation and loss of the plasma particles, as well as the power deposition. In particular, the power loss to the dust grains can take up a significant portion of the input power, often even exceeding the loss to the wall.

Abstract The discharging of dust particles in the afterglow of plasma with large dust density is studied. We used measured electron and metastable dependencies to calculate the rate describing collection of electrons by dust particles by solving the electron balance equation. This rate is compared with the rate calculated using the orbital motion limited (OML) theory. It is found that the OML theory may not be applied for description of dust charging at large afterglow times, and the energetic electrons generated in metastable-metastable collisions significantly affect charging of dust particles. The time dependence for dust charge is calculated by two different approaches: first, the "standard" approach is used, which assumes that ion and electron fluxes to the dust particles are different in the afterglow. Second, the dust charge is calculated by assuming that desorption of electrons from dust particles is very fast. Both approaches gave similar results for dust charging. In addition, the effects of secondary emission due to ion-dust and metastable-dust collisions on dust discharging are investigated. The main source of dust charging in the late afterglow of plasma with large dust density are the energetic electrons generated in Ar(m) metastable-metastable collisions.

Abstract A self-consistent fluid theory of complex electronegative colloidal plasmas in parallel-plate low-pressure discharge is presented. The self-organized low-pressure diffusion equilibrium is maintained through sources and sinks of electrons, positive and negative ions, in plasmas containing dust grains. It is shown that the colloidal dust grain subsystem strongly affects the stationary state of the discharge by dynamically modifying the electron temperature and particle creation and loss processes. The model accounts for ionization, ambipolar diffusion, electron and ion collection by the dusts, electron attachment, positive-ion-negative-ion recombination, and relevant elastic and inelastic collisions. The spatial profiles of electron and positive-ion-negative-ion number densities, electron temperature, and dust charge in electronegative SiH4 discharges are obtained for different grain size, input power, neutral gas pressure, and rates of negative-ion creation and loss.

Abstract The equilibrium profiles of the plasma parameters of large-area rf discharges in a finite-length metal-shielded dielectric cylinder are computed using a two-dimensional fluid code. The rf power is coupled to the plasma through edge-localized surface waves traveling in the azimuthal direction along the plasma edge. It is shown that self-consistent accounting for axial plasma diffusion and radial nonuniformity of the electron temperature can explain the frequently reported deviations of experimentally measured radial density profiles from that of the conventional linear diffusion models. The simulation results are in a good agreement with existing experimental data obtained from surface-wave sustained large-diameter plasmas.
