Abstract A challenge for real-time monitoring of biochemical processes, such as cells, is detection of biologically relevant molecules. This is due to the fact that spectroscopy methods for detection may perturb the cellular environment. One approach to overcome this problem is coupled microfluidic-spectroscopy, where a microfluidic output channel is introduced in order to observe biologically relevant molecules. This approach allows for non-passive spectroscopy methods, such as mass spectrometry, to identify the structure of molecules released by the cell. Due to the non-negligible length of the microfluidic channel, when a sequence of stimuli are applied to a cell it is not straightforward to determine which spectroscopy samples correspond to a given stimulus. In this paper, we propose a solution to this problem by taking a molecular communication (MC) perspective on the coupled microfluidic-spectroscopy system. In particular, assignment of samples to a stimulus is viewed as a synchronization problem. We develop two new algorithms for synchronization in this context and carry out a detailed theoretical and numerical study of their performance. Our results show improvements over maximum-likelihood synchronization algorithms in terms of detection performance when there are uncertainties in the composition of the microfluidic channel.

Abstract This work addresses the issue of energy efficiency maximization in a multi-user network aided by reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) with global reflection capabilities. Two optimization methods are proposed to optimize the mobile users' powers, the RIS coefficients and the linear receive filters. Both methods are provably convergent and require only the solution of convex optimization problems. The numerical results show that the proposed methods largely outperform heuristic resource allocation schemes.

Abstract This work addresses the comparison between active and passive RISs in wireless networks, with reference to the system energy efficiency (EE). To provably convergent and computationally-friendly EE maximization algorithms are developed, which optimize the reflection coefficients of the RIS, the transmit powers, and the linear receive filters. Numerical results show the performance of the proposed methods and discuss the operating points in which active or passive RISs should be preferred from an energy-efficient perspective.

Abstract In this paper, we propose a novel reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted wireless communication scheme which uses the concept of spatial modulation, namely RIS-assisted receive quadrature spatial modulation (RIS-RQSM). In the proposed RIS-RQSM system, the information bits are conveyed via both the indices of the two selected receive antennas and the conventional in-phase/quadrature (IQ) modulation. We propose a novel methodology to adjust the phase shifts of the RIS elements in order to maximize the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and at the same time to construct two separate PAM symbols at the selected receive antennas, as the in-phase and quadrature components of the desired IQ symbol. An energy-based greedy detector (GD) is implemented at the receiver to efficiently detect the received signal with minimal channel state information (CSI) via the use of an appropriately designed one-tap pre-equalizer. We also derive a closed-form upper bound on the average bit error probability (ABEP) of the proposed RIS-RQSM system. Then, we formulate an optimization problem to minimize the ABEP in order to improve the performance of the system, which allows the GD to act as a near-optimal receiver. Extensive numerical results are provided to demonstrate the error rate performance of the system and to compare with that of a prominent benchmark scheme. The results verify the remarkable superiority of the proposed RIS-RQSM system over the benchmark scheme.

Abstract Multiport network theory has been proved to be a suitable abstraction model for analyzing and optimizing reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs), especially for studying the impact of the electromagnetic mutual coupling among radiating elements that are spaced less than half of the wavelength. Both representations in terms of $Z$-parameter (impedance) and $S$-parameter (scattering) matrices are widely utilized. In this paper, we embrace multiport network theory for analyzing and optimizing the reradiation properties of RIS-aided channels, and provide four new contributions. (i) First, we offer a thorough comparison between the $Z$-parameter and $S$-parameter representations. This comparison allows us to unveil that the typical scattering models utilized for RIS-aided channels ignore the structural scattering from the RIS, which results in an unwanted specular reflection. (ii) Then, we develop an iterative algorithm for optimizing, in the presence of electromagnetic mutual coupling, the tunable loads of the RIS based on the $S$-parameters representation. We prove that small perturbations of the step size of the algorithm result in larger variations of the $S$-parameter matrix compared with the $Z$-parameter matrix, resulting in a faster convergence rate. (iii) Subsequently, we generalize the proposed algorithm to suppress the specular reflection due to the structural scattering, while maximizing the received power towards the direction of interest, and analyze the effectiveness and tradeoffs of the proposed approach. (iv) Finally, we validate the theoretical findings and algorithms with numerical simulations and a commercial full-wave electromagnetic simulator based on the method of moments.

Abstract In this paper, we present electromagnetic signal and information theory (ESIT). ESIT is an interdisciplinary scientific discipline, which amalgamates electromagnetic theory, signal processing theory, and information theory. ESIT is aimed at studying and designing physically consistent communication schemes for the transmission and processing of information in communication networks. In simple terms, ESIT can be defined as physics-aware information theory and signal processing for communications. We consider three relevant problems in contemporary communication theory, and we show how they can be tackled under the lenses of ESIT. Specifically, we focus on (i) the theoretical and practical motivations behind antenna designs based on subwavelength radiating elements and interdistances; (ii) the modeling and role played by the electromagnetic mutual coupling, and the appropriateness of multiport network theory for modeling it; and (iii) the analytical tools for unveiling the performance limits and realizing spatial multiplexing in near field, line-of-sight, channels. To exemplify the role played by ESIT and the need for electromagnetic consistency, we consider case studies related to reconfigurable intelligent surfaces and holographic surfaces, and we highlight the inconsistencies of widely utilized communication models, as opposed to communication models that originate from first electromagnetic principles.

Abstract This work considers the problem of energy efficiency maximization in a RIS-based communication link, subject to not only the conventional maximum power constraints, but also additional constraints on the maximum exposure to electromagnetic radiations of the end-users. The RIS phase shifts, the transmit beamforming, the linear receive filter, and the transmit power are jointly optimized, and two provably convergent and low-complexity algorithms are developed. One algorithm can be applied to the general system setups, but does not guarantee global optimality. The second algorithm is provably optimal in a notable special case. The numerical results show that RIS-based communications can ensure high energy efficiency while fulfilling users' exposure constraints to radio frequency emissions.

Abstract The emergence of various technologies demanding both high data rates and precise sensing performance, such as autonomous vehicles and internet of things devices, has propelled an increasing popularity of integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) in recent years. ISAC offers an efficient framework for communication and sensing where both functionalities are carried out in a shared spectrum, utilizing the same hardware, beamformer and waveform design. At the same time, intelligent metasurfaces have been identified as an architectural enabler for the upcoming sixth-generation (6G) of wireless communication due to their ability to control the propagation environment in an energy-efficient manner. Due to the potential of metasurfaces to enhance both communication and sensing performance, numerous papers have explored the performance gains of using metasurfaces to improve ISAC. This survey reviews the existing literature on metasurface-assisted ISAC, detailing the associated challenges and opportunities. To provide a comprehensive overview, we commence by offering relevant background information on standalone metasurface-assisted communication and metasurface-assisted sensing systems, followed by a discussion on the fundamentals of ISAC. The core part of the paper then summarizes the state-of-the-art studies on metasurface-assisted ISAC with metasurfaces employed as separate entities placed between the transmitter and receiver, also known as reconfigurable intelligent surfaces, with an emphasis on its two levels of integration: radio-communications co-existence and dual-function radar-communications. We also review the current works in the area of holographic ISAC where metasurfaces are used to form part of ISAC transmitter. Within each category, the challenges, opportunities and future research directions are also highlighted.
