Abstract Background: The pandemic has increased the rates of violent behavior towards women by their partners worldwide. Increased time spent living with the abusive partner, working at home and limited social contact combined with socioeconomic characteristics contributed to the increase in this type of violence.
Objective: To investigate the impact of pandemic COVID-19 and social determinants of health (SDOH) on the intimate partner violence (IPV) experienced by women from their partners.
Methods: A systematic review was conducted to investigate the impact of COVID-19 and social determinants of health on violence experienced by women from their partner(s) as a consequence of incarceration. The Pubmed and Scopus databases were searched during December 2022, using the keywords "intimate partner violence", "women", "COVID-19", "socioeconomic factors", "social determinants of health".
Results: Of the 917 studies initially retrieved, 38 studies found an increased prevalence of women's reported violence by their partners, 10 found a low prevalence, and 9 found no difference in prevalence before and during restraint. The most common forms of violence were psychological, physical and sexual. In 30 studies, social determinants such as socioeconomic level, education and living conditions were found to be associated with the prevalence of violence.
Conclusion: There was an increase in violence against women during quarantine which was associated with the effect of social determinants. However, due to research limitations of the studies, additional research is needed to draw firm conclusions that can be generalized to the population.

Abstract The Particulate Matter Source Apportionment Technology (PSAT) algorithm is used together with PMCAMx, a regional chemical transport model, to develop a simple observation-based method (OBM) for the estimation of local and regional contributions of sources of primary and secondary pollutants in urban areas. We test the hypothesis that the minimum of the diurnal average concentration profile of the pollutant is a good estimate of the average contribution of long range transport levels. We use PMCAMx to generate “pseudo-observations” for four different European cities (Paris, London, Milan, and Dusseldorf) and PSAT to estimate the corresponding “true” local and regional contributions. The predictions of the proposed OBM are compared to the “true” values for different definitions of the source area.During winter, the estimates by the OBM for the local contributions to the concentrations of total PM2.5, primary pollutants, and sulfate are within 25% of the “true” contributions of the urban area sources. For secondary organic aerosol the OBM overestimates the importance of the local sources and it actually estimates the contributions of sources within 200 km from the receptor.During summer for primary pollutants and cities with low nearby emissions (ratio of emissions in an area extending 100 km from the city over local emissions lower than 10) the OBM estimates correspond to the city emissions within 25% or so. For cities with relatively high nearby emissions the OBM estimates correspond to emissions within 100 km from the receptor. For secondary PM2.5 components like sulfate and secondary organic aerosol the OBM's estimates correspond to sources within 200 km from the receptor. Finally, for total PM2.5 the OBM provides approximately the contribution of city emissions during the winter and the contribution of sources within 100 km from the receptor during the summer.

Abstract Vertically aligned carbon nanotube (CNT) forests are a particularly interesting class of nanomaterials, because they combine multifunctional properties, such as high energy absorption, compressive strength, recoverability, and super-hydrophobicity with light weight. These characteristics make them suitable for application as coating, protective layers, and antifouling substrates for metallic pipelines and blades. Direct growth of CNT forests on metals offers the possibility of transferring the tunable CNT functionalities directly onto the desired substrates. Here, we focus on characterizing the structure and mechanical properties, as well as wettability and adhesion, of CNT forests grown on different types of stainless steel. We investigate the correlations between composition and morphology of the steel substrates with the micro-structure of the CNTs and reveal how the latter ultimately controls the mechanical and wetting properties of the CNT forest. Additionally, we study the influence of substrate morphology on the adhesion of CNTs to their substrate. We highlight that the same structure-property relationships govern the mechanical performance of CNT forests grown on steels and on Si.

Abstract In lightweight engineering, there is a constant quest for low-density materials featuring high mass-specific stiffness and strength. Additively-manufactured metamaterials are particularly promising candidates as the controlled introduction of porosity allows for tailoring their density while activating strengthening size-effects at the nano- and microstructural level. Here, plate-lattices are conceived by placing plates along the closest-packed planes of crystal structures. Based on theoretical analysis, a general design map is developed for elastically isotropic plate-lattices of cubic symmetry. In addition to validating the design map, detailed computational analysis reveals that there even exist plate-lattice compositions that provide nearly isotropic yield strength together with elastic isotropy. The most striking feature of plate-lattices is that their stiffness and yield strength are within a few percent of the theoretical limits for isotropic porous solids. This implies that the stiffness of isotropic plate-lattices is up to three times higher than that of the stiffest truss-lattices of equal mass. This stiffness advantage is also confirmed by experiments on truss- and plate-lattice specimens fabricated through direct laser writing. Due to their porous internal structure, the potential impact of the new metamaterials reported here goes beyond lightweight engineering, including applications for heat-exchange, thermal insulation, acoustics, and biomedical engineering.

Abstract The utilization of pine trees bark is receiving increasing attention. For management purposes, it is very useful to be able to estimate bark volume quantity of standing trees. This paper is concerned with the use of artificial neural network (ANN) models for accurate bark volume estimation of standing pine trees (Pinus brutia) as an alternative to regression models. The procedure that should be followed in the development of such models is outlined. Five different nonlinear regression models were fitted to data using the Levenberg-Marquardt optimization algorithm. Because of the bias detected on the assumptions and the high error values, three-layer feed-forward cascade correlation ANN models were developed to estimate bark volume. A comparative study of both nonlinear regression models and selected cascade correlation ANN model with the structure of 4-7-1/0.9982 indicated that the ANN model performed better than the best nonlinear regression model with error values 6.02% (root mean square error) and 13.3% (Furnival's index) of the mean bark volume, respectively. Paired t-test, 45° line test and absolute deviation percentage were also used for validation of the chosen models. The results clearly demonstrate the superiority of the ANN models to the regression models due to their ability to overcome the problems in forest data, such as nonlinear relationships, non-Gaussian distributions, outliers and noise in the data. The ANN technique introduced in this study is sufficiently general and has great potential to be applicable to many forest modeling applications providing a very useful tool as an alternative to traditional regression models.

Abstract: Relations between mind-mindedness (assessed using the describe-your-child interview) and stress were investigated in parents of children with developmental disorders (ADHD, n = 51, ASD, n = 23, Down's Syndrome, n = 38, and 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome, ... ...

Abstract Relations between mind-mindedness (assessed using the describe-your-child interview) and stress were investigated in parents of children with developmental disorders (ADHD, n = 51, ASD, n = 23, Down's Syndrome, n = 38, and 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome, 22q11.2DS, n = 32) and typically-developing children (n = 89). Mind-mindedness did not differ across diagnostic groups, and mind-mindedness predicted parenting stress across groups. Parenting stress was lowest in the typically-developing and Down's Syndrome groups. Across all groups, mind-minded and positive descriptions predicted lower parenting stress, and negative descriptions predicted higher stress. In the developmental disorder groups, describing the children with reference to their disorder was negatively correlated with mind-mindedness. Results are discussed with regard to interventions for families where children have developmental disorders.

Abstract We have investigated the relationship between consumption of food groups and intake of energy-generating macronutrients on the one hand, and birthweight on the other among apparently healthy singleton, term babies. Three hundred and sixty-eight women who delivered in six maternity clinics in two Greek cities during specified days over an 8-month period completed a 190-item, interviewer-administered, validated, semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire. Study participants also provided information on sociodemographic, reproductive and lifestyle variables. Data were analysed using multiple regression modelling. Nutritional variables were energy-adjusted, and non-nutritional correlates of birthweight were accounted for. The analysis revealed most of the established non-nutritional associations of birthweight -- an indication of study validity. Among food groups, meat and meat products and fish and sea food were suggestively associated with increased birthweight (two tailed P-values 0.08 and 0.16, respectively). Among energy-generating nutrients, monounsaturated fat was positively associated with birthweight and significantly so in several of the models. We consider our findings are considered as compatible with hypotheses linking fish and meat intake to fetal growth and as indicative of a positive association between intake of monounsaturated fat and birthweight.

Abstract Quasireal photons exchanged in relativistic heavy ion interactions are powerful probes of the gluonic structure of nuclei. The coherent J/ψ photoproduction cross section in ultraperipheral lead-lead collisions is measured as a function of photon-nucleus center-of-mass energies per nucleon (W_{γN}^{Pb}) over a wide range of 40<W_{γN}^{Pb}<400  GeV. Results are obtained using data at the nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.52  nb^{-1}. The cross section is observed to rise rapidly at low W_{γN}^{Pb}, and plateau above W_{γN}^{Pb}≈40  GeV, up to 400  GeV, entering a new regime of small Bjorken-x (≈6×10^{-5}) gluons being probed in a heavy nucleus. The observed energy dependence is not predicted by current quantum chromodynamic models.<br />
