Abstract The main purpose of English learning is to communicate and interact in global contexts. However, in English as a foreign language (EFL) contexts as in China, most of the students have limited interactional competence in contrast to their grammatical and structural competence. The reason is that Chinese classrooms mostly lack an interactional climate. This calls for an urgent need to develop interpersonal interaction skills by EFL teachers via appropriate strategies. To this end, this article presents an overview of nine interpersonal communication skills/strategies which are pivotal in L2 education. It also describes their definitions and related theories. Moreover, the outcomes of such strategies in aural skills are also explained. Finally, implications, research gaps, and future avenues for research are provided.

Abstract Background: Rhino-orbito-cerebral mucormycosis (ROCM) is an opportunistic pathogenic fungal disease caused by the fungus mucor, and it is a life-threatening fungal infection. The ulceration on the skin of the head and neck, accompanied by rhinitis, headache, orbital inflammation, and eyelid edema, should raise a high suspicion of Mucor infection in diabetic patients with inadequately controlled blood glucose.
Case description: The clinical data of a patient with ROCM were analyzed retrospectively, and the clinical features were analyzed. The patient was admitted to the hospital with "diabetic hyperosmotic coma" after presenting with fatigue, poor appetite, and disturbances in consciousness as initial symptoms. After improving relevant examinations, controlling underlying diseases, and administering antifungal treatment, the final clinical outcome was death.
Conclusion: ROCM is more prevalent in patients with uncontrolled diabetes and varied clinical manifestations. The characteristic feature is an eschar-like necrosis of the local skin or mucosa. The gold criteria for diagnosis are pathology and fungal culture; imaging examination does not reveal any specific manifestations. Early diagnosis and effective treatment are the keys.

Abstract Noroviruses are among the major causative agents of human acute gastroenteritis, and the nature of norovirus outbreaks can differ considerably. The number of single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) between strains is used to assess their relationships. There is currently no universally accepted cutoff value for clustering strains that define an outbreak or linking the individuals involved. This study was conducted to estimate the threshold value of genomic variations among related strains within norovirus outbreaks. We carried out a literature search in the PubMed and Web of Science databases. SNP rates were defined as the number of SNPs/sequence length (bp) × 100%. The Mann-Whitney U-test was used in comparisons of the distribution of SNP rates for different sequence regions, genogroups (GI and GII), transmission routes, and sequencing methods. A total of 25 articles reporting on 108 norovirus outbreaks were included. In 99.1% of the outbreaks, the SNP rates were below 0.50%, and in 89.8%, the SNP rates were under 0.20%. Outbreak strains showed higher SNP rates when the P2 domain was used for sequence analysis (Z = -2.652, p = 0.008) and when an NGS method was used (Z = -3.686, p < 0.001). Outbreaks caused by different norovirus genotypes showed no significant difference in SNP rates. Compared with person-to-person outbreaks, SNP rates were lower in common-source outbreaks, but no significant difference was found when differences in sequencing methods were taken into consideraton. SNP rates under 0.20% and 0.50% could be considered as the rigorous and relaxed threshold, respectively, of strain similarity within a norovirus outbreak. More data are needed to evaluate differences within and between various norovirus outbreaks.

Abstract Background: Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) is gradually becoming an alternative therapy for patients who cannot adapt to surgical treatment or have contraindications.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the value of echocardiography in the evaluation of severe AR patients treated with TAVR and to analyze the correlations with postprocedural complications to improve the evaluation and screening of patients.
Methods: We retrospectively analyzed clinical and echocardiographic data of 70 patients with severe AR. Periaortic valve structures were carefully measured by esophageal echocardiography (TEE) and compared with the multilayer slice computed tomography (MSCT) findings. Real-time three-dimensional esophageal echocardiography (RT-3D TEE) was monitored during the operation, and a 30-day postprocedural follow-up was performed. The relationship between postprocedural complications and patients' clinical data or periaortic valve structures was analyzed by multifactorial analysis to identify relevant predictors of complications.
Results: The TEE measurements of periaortic valve structures were in good agreement with the MSCT measurements. Among the patients who underwent successful operations, both left atrial (LA) and left ventricular (LV) diameters were reduced, and the left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) was improved 30 days after TAVR compared with the preprocedural period (P < .05). Permanent pacemakers were implanted in 15 patients. The presence of preprocedural right bundle branch block (RBBB) (OR: 2.93; 95% CI: 1.18-12.70; P = .01) was an independent factor for permanent pacemaker implantation after TAVR.
Conclusions: Echocardiography plays an extremely important role in TAVR procedures. The presence of preprocedural RBBB can be an independent predictor of postprocedural pacemaker implantation.

Abstract The mechanical characteristics of graphene ribbons with an attached proof mass that can be used as NEMS transducers have been minimally studied, which hinders the development of graphene-based NEMS devices. Here, we simulated the mechanical characteristics of graphene ribbons with an attached proof mass using the finite element method. We studied the impact of force, residual stress, and geometrical size on displacement, strain, resonant frequency, and fracture strength of graphene ribbons with an attached proof mass. The results show that the increase of width and thickness of graphene ribbons would result in a decrease of the displacement and strain but also an increase of resonant frequency. The increase of the length of graphene ribbons has an insignificant impact on the strain, but it could increase the displacement and decrease the resonant frequency. The increase of residual stress in the graphene ribbons decreases its strain and displacement. The estimated fracture strength of graphene shows limited dependence on its thickness, with an estimated value of around 148 GPa. These findings contribute to the understanding of the mechanical characteristics of graphene ribbons with an attached proof mass and lay the solid foundation for the design and manufacture of high-performance graphene-based NEMS devices such as accelerometers.

Abstract Buoyant and high self-efficacious teachers seem to be unlikely to feel burned out. Accordingly, examining the relationship between teachers' buoyancy and self-efficacy seems significant. Even though the correlation between self-efficacy and burnout has been studied, precise attention should be paid to the quantitative investigations of the relationship between teachers' academic buoyancy, self-efficacy, and burnout in China, English as a Foreign Language(EFL) context. To address this gap, the present study aimed to assess the relationship between Chinese EFL teachers' academic buoyancy, self-efficacy, and burnout. In doing so, 399 Chinese EFL teachers (354 females and 45 males) were selected from 11 provinces and 18 cities in China. Three related questionnaires were virtually distributed among participants to gather data. The correlational tests revealed significant negative associations between Chinese EFL teachers' burnout, self-efficacy, and academic buoyancy. The outcomes of multiple regression analyses also indicated that teachers' burnout was negatively predicted by their self-efficacy and academic buoyancy. Finally, The implications of the results are discussed.

Abstract IgA nephropathy (IgAN) and IgA vasculitis-associated nephritis (IgAVN) are among the most frequent childhood glomerular diseases and are characterized by significant variability in clinical manifestations, pathological presentation and long-term outcomes. IgAVN, alternatively called purpura nephritis, is pathologically indistinguishable from kidney-limited IgAN. In Chinese children, the clinical presentations and pathological manifestations of IgAN and IgAVN are variable. The severity of proteinuria and abnormalities in kidney function and blood pressure of children in China are comparable to those of children in Europe, the USA, and Japan. Compared to Caucasian children and Japanese children, crescents were more common in Chinese children with IgAN or IgAVN. Approximately 10-20% of childhood IgAN or IgAVN progresses to impaired kidney function in China. Since 2007, a series of guidelines on the diagnosis and treatment of pediatric kidney diseases has been published following the principles of evidence-based medicine. However, a large difference exists between the Chinese evidence-based guidelines and the guidelines developed by Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) in 2021. Chinese children with IgAN or IgAVN were more likely to be treated with steroids or immunosuppressive agents. Further studies exploring the optimal treatment regimen for childhood IgAN or IgAVN are needed in the future.

Abstract This research aims to investigate the potential of using intrinsic optical signal (IOS) optoretinography (ORG) to objectively detect dark adaptation (DA) abnormalities related to rod photoreceptor degeneration. Functional optical coherence tomography (OCT) was employed in both wild-type (WT) and retinal degeneration 10 (rd10) mice to conduct this assessment. Dynamic OCT measurements captured the changes in retinal thickness and reflectance from light-to-dark transition. Comparative analysis revealed significant IOS alterations within the outer retina. Specifically, a reduction in thickness from external limiting membrane (ELM) peak to retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) peak was observed (WT: 1.13 ± 0.69 µm, 30 min DA; rd10: 2.64 ± 0.86 µm, 30 min DA), as well as a decrease in the intensity of the inner segment ellipsoid zone (EZ) in 30 min DA compared to light adaptation (LA). The reduction of relative EZ intensity was notable in rd10 after 5 min DA and in WT after 15 min DA, with a distinguishable difference between rd10 and WT after 10 min DA. Furthermore, our findings indicated a significant decrease in the relative intensity of the hypo-reflective band between EZ and RPE in rd10 retinas during DA, which primarily corresponds to the outer segment (OS) region. In conclusion, the observed DA-IOS abnormalities, including changes in ELM-RPE thickness, EZ, and OS intensity, hold promise as differentiators between WT and rd10 mice before noticeable morphological abnormalities occur. These findings suggest the potential of this non-invasive imaging technique for the early detection of dysfunction in retinal photoreceptors.

Abstract Pregnancy complicated with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a severe and dangerous condition for both the mother and the fetus. Pregnancy-specific alterations in the maternal cardiovascular system suggest that PAH in pregnancy may manifest more severe symptoms compared with those in non-pregnant patients. Although most societal guidelines recommend early termination in the case of PAH, some recent data suggests that maternal mortality among patients with PAH is lower than previously observed and suggests if a woman decides to proceed with the pregnancy, she should be counseled about the potential risks of continuing with the pregnancy. This review paper starts with a real clinical case of PAH complicating with pregnancy, then summarizes the clinical features, diagnosis, and risk stratification. Effective treatments were also clarified, including pre-conception counseling and monitoring, general and supportive care, medication and immune therapy, delivery and postpartum care, counseling on contraception and breastfeeding, maternal and fetal outcomes, and cardiac surgery. The article summarizes points of uncertainty in both laboratory and clinical practices, as well as current guidelines and clinical recommendations.
