    Abstract Ferroptosis, known as a type of programmed cell death that is iron dependent, is characterized by intracellular iron accumulation, glutathione depletion, glutathione peroxidase inactivation and lipid peroxidation. More and more research in recent years has demonstrated the tight connection between viral infections and ferroptosis. This article reviews the potential role and mechanism of ferroptosis in viral infection, and these findings will help in the prevention and treatment of the virus.

    Abstract This study explored the effect of childhood subjective socioeconomic status on mental health and the chain-mediating mechanism of perceived discrimination and status anxiety. A random survey was conducted via an online survey platform with 999 college students in east China. Participants completed the Childhood Subjective Socioeconomic Status Scale, General Health Questionnaire, Status Anxiety Scale, and the Perceived Personal Discrimination Scale. The sample comprised 323 men and 676 women. The mean age was 20.49±2.70 years. Mediation analysis using Model 6 and 5,000 bootstrap samples was employed to explore the mediating role of perceived discrimination and status anxiety in the relationship between childhood subjective socioeconomic status and mental health. Mental health was significantly positively correlated with childhood socioeconomic status, and significantly negatively correlated with perceived discrimination and status anxiety. Perceived discrimination and status anxiety played a partial chain mediating role between childhood socioeconomic status and mental health. The mediation model accounted for 31% of the variance in mental health. Moreover, the results indicated that the significant mediating effect of perceived discrimination between childhood subjective SES and mental health had a value of 0.029 and a 95% confidence interval of [0.019, 0.041]. Furthermore, the significant mediating effect of status anxiety between childhood subjective SES and mental health had a value of 0.010 and a 95% confidence interval of [0.006, 0.014]. The results provide an explanation of how childhood subjective socioeconomic status influences their mental health. Interventions to address perceived discrimination and status anxiety can improve the mental health status of children who experience childhood adversity. The study's findings contribute to understanding mental health in childhood and inform potential interventions to improve the well-being of individuals who have experienced childhood adversity. The limitations of the study were self-report scales and potential biases in the sample population. Addressing these limitations will enhance the credibility of the research and pave the way for future studies.

    Abstract Nonlinear models of neural networks demonstrate the ability to autonomously extract significant attributes from a given target, thus facilitating automatic analysis of classroom emotions. This article introduces an online auxiliary tool for analyzing emotional states in virtual classrooms using the nonlinear vision algorithm Transformer. This research uses multimodal fusion, students' auditory input, facial expression and text data as the foundational elements of sentiment analysis. In addition, a modal feature extractor has been developed to extract multimodal emotions using convolutional and gated cycle unit (GRU) architectures. In addition, inspired by the Transformer algorithm, a cross-modal Transformer algorithm is proposed to enhance the processing of multimodal information. The experiments demonstrate that the training performance of the proposed model surpasses that of similar methods, with its recall, precision, accuracy, and F1 values achieving 0.8587, 0.8365, 0.8890, and 0.8754, respectively, which is superior accuracy in capturing students' emotional states, thus having important implications in assessing students' engagement in educational courses.

    Abstract The basal ganglia (BG) make up a prominent nexus between visual and motor-related brain regions. In contrast to the BG's well-established roles in movement control and value-based decision making, their contributions to the transformation of visual input into an action remain unclear, especially in the context of perceptual decisions based on uncertain visual evidence. This article reviews recent progress in our understanding of the BG's contributions to the formation, evaluation, and adjustment of such decisions. From theoretical and experimental perspectives, the review focuses on four key stations in the BG network, namely, the striatum, pallidum, subthalamic nucleus, and midbrain dopamine neurons, which can have different roles and together support the decision process.

    Abstract Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic has caused untold damage to the socio-economic lives of people all over the world. Research has also demonstrated great inequality in the pandemic experience. In the UK as in many other countries, people from ethnic minority backgrounds and in working-class positions have suffered disproportionately more than the majority group and those in salariat positions in terms of income loss, financial difficulty, and vulnerability to infection. Yet little is known about how people coped in the daily lives and tried to maintain their well-being during the most difficult days of the pandemic through social capital.
    Methods: In this paper, we draw data from the COVID-19 Survey in Five National Longitudinal Studies to address these questions. The survey covered the period from May 2020 to February 2021, the height of the pandemic in the UK. It contains numerous questions on contact, help and support among family, friends, community members, socio-political trust, and physical and mental health. We conceptualise three types of social capital and one type of overall well-being and we construct latent variables from categorical indicator variables. We analyse the ethnic and socio-economic determinants of the three types of social capital and their impacts on well-being.
    Results: Our analysis shows that social capital plays very important roles on well-being, and that ethnic minority groups, particularly those of Pakistani/Bangladeshi and Black heritages, faced multiple disadvantages: their poorer socio-economic positions prevented them from gaining similar levels of social capital to those of the white group. However, for people with the same levels of social capital, the effects on well-being are generally similar.
    Discussion: Socio-economic (class) inequality is the root cause for ethnic differences in social capital which in turn affects people's well-being.

    Abstract Psychoactive substances (PSs) represent a subset of emerging contaminants. Their widespread production and utilization contribute to a growing ecological burden and risk on a global scale. Conventional wastewater treatment methods have proven insufficient in adequately removing psychoactive substances, leading to their occurrence in surface water ecosystems worldwide. As of present, however, a thorough understanding of their geographical prevalence and distribution patterns remains elusive. Further, in the existing literature, there is a scarcity of comprehensive overviews that systematically summarize the toxicity of various psychoactive substances towards aquatic organisms. Through summarizing almost 140 articles, the present study provides an overview of the sources, pollution status, and biotoxicity of psychoactive substances in surface waters, as well as an assessment of their ecological risks.
