Abstract Directional emission of electromagnetic waves plays an essential role in laser radar and free-space communication. For most directional antennas, bandwidth and miniaturization are a pair of contradictions due to their underlying interference mechanism. Connection-type metamaterials exhibit exotic electromagnetic response near zero-frequency, which relies on the global topology of mesh connectivity rather than resonance and thus has a broad working bandwidth. In this Letter, we investigate the broadband orientation-dependent coupling effect of a 3D double mesh metamaterial. Based on this effect, we achieve a broadband directional emission (relative bandwidth of 37.72%) using a compact structure (compared to twice working wavelength). Our work provides a novel, to the best of our knowledge, scheme to manipulate a long-wavelength wave and may pave the way to a miniaturized directional antenna.

Abstract In recent years, mRNA drugs have shown a great potential for the treatment of genetic diseases and attracted the attention of many researchers. This article has reviewed the advance in the research of mRNA drugs for the treatment of genetic diseases over the past 30 years, including their mechanisms of action and structure design, with a focus on their advantages as alternative therapies such as high specificity, low dosage, and sustained expression. Meanwhile, challenges for the effective delivery and storage methods for the mRNA drugs are discussed, with an aim to provide guidance for subsequent researches.

Abstract This paper presents a wearable metasurface multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna for biomedical applications in a 5 GHz wireless body area network (WBAN) with broadband, circular polarization (CP), and high gain. The physical properties of the MIMO antenna element and the principles of polarization conversion are analyzed in-depth using characteristic mode analysis. For the proposed MIMO antenna, the measured -10 dB impedance bandwidth is 34.87% (4.76-6.77 GHz), and the 3 dB axial ratio bandwidth is 22.94% (4.9-6.17 GHz). By adding an isolation strip, the measured isolation of the two antenna elements is greater than 19.85 dB. The overall size of the MIMO antenna is 1.67λ

Abstract Sarcoidosis is a systemic inflammatory disease of unknown etiology, which mainly affects the lungs and lymph nodes, as well as extrapulmonary organs. Its incidence, and prevalence rate, and disease course largely vary with regions and populations globally. The clinical manifestations of sarcoidosis depend on the affected organs and the degree of severity, and the diagnosis is mainly based on serum biomarkers, radiographic, magnetic resonance, or positron emission tomography imaging, and pathological biopsy. Noncaseating granulomas composing T cells, macrophages, epithelioid cells, and giant cells, were observed in a pathological biopsy, which was the characteristic pathological manifestation of sarcoidosis. Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) was first found in the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system. Its main function is to convert angiotensin I (Ang I) into Ang II, which plays an important role in regulating blood pressure. Also, an ACE insertion/deletion polymorphism exists in the human genome, which is involved in the occurrence and development of many diseases, including hypertension, heart failure, and sarcoidosis. The serum ACE level, most commonly used as a biomarker in diagnosing sarcoidosis, in patients with sarcoidosis increases. because of epithelioid cells and giant cells of sarcoid granuloma expressing ACE. Thus, it serves as the most commonly used biomarker in the diagnosis of sarcoidosis and also aids in analyzing its therapeutic effect and prognosis in patients with sarcoidosis.

Abstract Background: The feasibility of using laparoscopic proximal gastrectomy (LPG) for the treatment of proximal early gastric cancer (EGC) has not been addressed. This study aimed to comparatively evaluate the effects on LPG with piggyback jejunal interposition double-tract reconstruction (PJIDTR) versus laparoscopic total gastrectomy (LTG) with Roux-en-Y reconstruction (overlap method) using propensity score matching for proximal EGC.
Materials and methods: We examined the clinical outcomes of LPG with PJIDTR for proximal EGC. We retrospectively collected data from patients with proximal EGC who were treated at Shanxi Cancer Hospital between January 2012 and December 2015. The complication rate, nutritional indicators, reflux oesophagitis incidence and overall survival were compared between LTG and LPG with PJIDTR.
Results: Of the 424 patients, 200 were excluded, and 50 of the remaining patients received LPG with PJIDTR. Fifty matched LTG patients were screened. The incidence of early complications was 14% in the LPG group and 16% in the LTG group (P > 0.05). At 1 year after surgery, nutrition indices in the LPG group were significantly better than those in the LTG group (P < 0.05). One year after surgery, the Visick score II rate was 2% and 4%, and the endoscopic oesophagitis rate was 4% and 6% in the LPG and LTG groups, respectively. No tumour recurrence was observed in either group. The 5-year overall survival rates of the two groups were 98% and 90% (P = 0.08).
Conclusions: LPG with PJIDTR may be suitable for proximal EGC.

Abstract Alzheimer's disease (AD) is considered as one of the leading causes of death among people over the age of 70 that is characterized by memory degradation and language impairment. Due to language dysfunction observed in individuals with AD patients, the speech-based methods offer non-invasive, convenient, and cost-effective solutions for the automatic detection of AD. This paper systematically reviews the technologies to detect the onset of AD from spontaneous speech, including data collection, feature extraction and classification. First the paper formulates the task of automatic detection of AD and describes the process of data collection. Then, feature extractors from speech data and transcripts are reviewed, which mainly contains acoustic features from speech and linguistic features from text. Especially, general handcrafted features and deep embedding features are organized from different modalities. Additionally, this paper summarizes optimization strategies for AD detection systems. Finally, the paper addresses challenges related to data size, model explainability, reliability and multimodality fusion, and discusses potential research directions based on these challenges.
